Take a look at this transcript of an interview that Bill McEwen(Amiga's current
head honcho) gave with CNN.Apparently they've demoed the OS on a dreamcast (@

Right a low-down of the content of the zip file by directory:

Codescape - contains the development kit for the SH4 processor as
mentioned at www.crossproducts.co.uk (and I tell ya when they find
out about this they ain't gonna be pleased!)

DACheck - A debug utility that checks the connection from a PC to a
SCSI GD-ROM drive (yes, I can see ya'll sittin up an listenin' now..)

GDWorkshop - The aforementioned GD-ROM emulator

Hitachi - A series of programs including the assembler for the SH
processors (you can read that again if you want)

PRFDump - I couldn't figure this out. Sorry.

VMSTools - A wide range of VMU/VMS dev tools - including the OFFICAL
Sanyo assemblers, I haven't managed to get the GUI kit working yet
but hopefully I will.

Whew. I don't know what to say now. Get it b4 it goes. Because it'd
better go soon.

I know this a VMU mail group but everyone seems a little interested
in Dreamcast nowadays.
I think everyone needs to check out this site:
www.crossproducts.co.uk

I believe they have worked closely with Sega, working with the SH4
processor since 1994. SH4 as everyone knows is what is used in
Dreamcast. :-)

For those who are interested in making GD-ROMS the file mentioned
below contains a GD-ROM drive emulator. Read the below information
taken from the emu's help file. Remember Katana was the name for
Dreamcast when it was in development. I have not yet managed to get
the emulator to work as it requires ASPI32.exe but I'm working on it..

"The Katana GD Emulator (GD-M) and GD Workshop streamlines your CD
product development cycle.
Using GD Workshop you can create a "virtual" CD and emulate
it on the
Katana development box. This virtual CD can be edited and recreated
instantly so that you can test the effect of changes to the project
in seconds.
The Katana development box contains all the hardware required for
real-time CD emulation and GD Workshop provides remote control and
logging of CD emulation and writing, plus a CD editing suite."

In "Vagrant Story," you are the Artist Formerly Known as Prince
wearing ass-less pants, fighting the demons of the underworld in an
epic adventure combining "Purple Rain" with "Beastmaster." This is a
great RPG with the oddest art design and fashion sense we've ever
seen. However this game excels with its unique battle system, a
plethora of customizable weapons and a cornucopia full of daisy-
chainable attacks and def magic tricks. And if that's not enough,
we'll grab our crotch and scream "Purple Rain, Purple Rain!!!!"

Check it out!

Now of course this might still take a while, but Sega has finally
grudingly agreed to look at releasing the VMU development kit to the
general public. They are currently contacting Sanyo (Compiler
Developer) and Hudson Soft (VMU Emulator), and finding out if there
would be any problem if their tools were released publicly. I have
no idea how long that process will take. If there is no problem with
either company, then the tools will be released.

I would like to thank John Byrd at Sega of America Dreamcast for his
help in my crusade. He is the head of Developer Tech Support, and
without his assistance all of this wouldn't be possible. Just having
Sega agree that the VMU development community needs these tools is a
great win for us.

I would like to personally invite all VMU developers to sign up to a
new mailing list. The e-mail address is:
subscribe-vmu-coders@...
This list is being maintained by the folks here at Sega. Do me
proud, and we will try to answer questions. We are currently limited
in only answering questions on information that is already known.
Such as what does the OCR register do, but not how to use the VMU
Emulator or the Assemblers. Once everything is publicly released,
then of course our response level can change.

Take care everyone!

If you want your homemade games up there, and want new features to
that section of the site, be sure to let me know. Drop me a line at

Which is about... now.

It won't help you to burn a copy of the CDX coverdisc, and considering
I haven't written all the stuff about IP.BIN yet, it might not help
you to burn any software of your own either, but it should at least
tell you how to create a working disk with my serial port slave...

Nice idea. There is various vmu things around, and it would be great
to have them on a centralized place.

And this way, one wouldn't have to create a personal webpage to share
his programs/sources/utils.

Various suggestions for the directory tree (as they come to my mind):

dirs for games binaries and sources, tools binaries (perhaps with
subdirs for each platform ?), tools sources

Make the VMU binaries available as VMS as well as VMI files, maybe
with an option to display only VMI or only VMS files ? (and perhaps
also DCI ?)

For tools binaries, maybe choose prefered archive file format
according to each platform (ie. lha or lzx for amiga, tar gzip for
linux/unix, zip for windows)

I tried it yesterday... I like it much, especially because that I did

Well, the latest versions of my tools can be 'semi-automated'
too, since _all_ the input is now read from the default input
device (even the y/n checks). This means that you can now create
text files with the required input data and then feed it to the
program(s) with the DOS redirection commands, for example

         DCI2VMS FILE.DCI < DATA.TXT

So if you put such commands in a .BAT file and use redirection,
you only need to call that, with no further input.

However, your idea to get the info directly from the .VMI file
is _GREAT_... I guess I simply was too lazy to add that to my
own stuff.

Bye

Okay, as I was getting tired of continually having to boot a dos
emulator to convert .vms files to .dci to transfer to my nexus, I sat
down and wrote my own coverter programs. What I've come up with are a
pair of programs that can run without user interaction, and do the
following:

dci2vmx - this takes a .dci file as input and creates a .vmi and a
.vms file (suitable for web use)

vmx2dci - this takes a .vmi and .vms pair and creates a .dci file

Since it grabs all the info from the .vms, my converter doesn't need
to prompt the user for file type or filename, etc (which is nice, in
my opinion, since it works well in automated scripts - I've got a
makefile which will assemble a .s file, create a .vmi for it, convert
to .dci and copy to my nexus, all just from one command!)

As I'm not certain of its stability yet, I've only released a GPL
source archive, which can be found at
http://rvmu.port5.com/data/vmux_src.tgz - it should compile on any
ansi compiler (but don't quote me on that - It's currently only tested
under EGCS on my miggy!)

The only browser I know of that actually lets you change your user
agent string in its settings, is Lynx (a good old-fashioned text based
browser). Versions exist for virtually every computer system.

My I ask a question....
Is it possible to hack the browser's "USER-AGENT" so that I can
download/get access to the server for the files?

I have HEX editors, but I have no Windows PC and no link cable (MS free
zone here).
Do you think you could do me the favor and email me the SONICADV_HO7
file? Do you have any information about the format of the file?

Do you have also a file that you get when you download a Chao from the
day care?

This mechanmism could make it possible to directly upload and download
files from the VMU to a Website and vice versa without using the email
interface, no?

That's because SONICADV_HO7 is an html file.
Check out what I did on
http://metrosonic.webprovider.com/sonicperil/gift.html
to see an example. It overrides samba GP with my HTML file, and loads it
when you goto the Upload Data link.

Just look at SONICADV_HO7 in a hex editor. :-)

Ok, I realise I'm a bit late with commenting on all this, but I have
A) been out of town
B) actually done stuff instead of writing about it :-)

So, what can I say? _Yes_, it is true. It is possible to boot from a
CD-R. I have myself booted the AR CDX demo from a CD-R. I have also
managed to modify the CD image to contain some code of my own, so I
now have a CD-R that allows me to upload and run code through the
serial port...

My Dreamcast is a Japanese one, btw, so I don't think there are any
PAL/NTSC problems with the CDX demo. I was able to use it to boot the
European version of MDK2 on my Japanese DC.

As several of you seem to have noticed, the CD image that can be found
on the net is a bit tricky to actually burn though. When I get time,
I'll try to create a bootable CD-R without using this image directly,
so that we can find out how to do it without having to rely on
specific burning software (that happens to be quite picky about what
CD-R drives it can use as well...). As usual, I'll publish info on my
website when I have something conclusive.
