While we're on the subject of building custom connector hardware, would
it be easier to build some kind of connector box that lets you plug in
a DC controller to your computer? (which would then let you access the
VM too)

The connector would be easier to get hold of, as you can buy 3rd party
controller extension cables fairly cheaply
