Generally, most online Duo CD images are pretty crappy.
If you do manage to track down a quality copy, Most PCE systems should
play them alright.
In my personal experiece, both my Turbo Duos played cdr's flawlessly
and even handled the crappiest downloaded games alright.
My Duo RX however, has trouble playing even the best cdr games and
won't really run downloaded games at all.
And the one white PCE CD-ROM that I've tried cdr's on didn't handle
them too well either.
But its not much of a problem, since 95% of PCE/Duo games ae now dirt
cheap and even Dracula X is only $75 - $150, which is what I was paying
for all PCE imports back in the day.
I'd suggest doing what I do with roms/emulation/video & music downloads.
Test the game out on your computer, and if ts worth it to you, go buy
the original to play on your hardware.
Alright then. I'll try picking up some high end CD-Rs and give it a
shot. If that doesn't work then I'll have to buy a copy of magic
engine. Still cheaper than paying $150 for a single game.

I've got some bad news and some possibly bad news.
PC engine CD's and Turbo Duos generally don't liked
burned media.
The Japanese Duo-R takes it a bit better.
My Suggestion is that you try using a really good CD,
like Sony, and burn it at 1X (yes one-X) (using
dao-96, I think (I would check on that))

Well, now that I have my PC Engine functioning, I really want to play
Dracula X. I managed to burn it to a CD-RW and play it on Magic
Engine, but for some reason my PC Engine won't take to it. Any ideas?
Oh, and the next time I post a message it won't be about a problem. -_-
Awesome, I'm glad everything worked out!

Alright, I managed to figure it out. The PC Engine Duo-R needs a 9v,
1500 amp AV adaptor with a "C" plug. Glad I finally managed to make it
work...

That's unfortunate. My friend happens to have a TG16 that he never
uses, so I'm going to try to borrow his AC Adaptor. With any luck it
will work for the Duo. Thanks for trying.

There always seems to be power supply problems in the TG16/PCE
community. I'm afraid I can't really help you for this, except maybe
ask that person on PC Engine FX what type of AC adapter he has exactly
and look for that on Radio Shack's website or elsewhere online. By the
way, Radio Shack employees never seem to know much about electronics
and they overcharge their items for way more than what they should be
worth.

Hi, I'm new to the group and from what I can tell everyone here knows
a lot about the PC Engine. I recently bought a PC Engine Duo R, but I
don't have an appropriate power supply. I looked at the other
messages, and found that I had to buy a specific part from Radio
Shack, but when I looked for it I was unable to find it. Instead, I
bought a "Multi-Voltage 1000mA Power Adapter" that has several
different plugs. I was told by the salesman to use the "M" plug on the
positive end, but that doesn't seem to be working. Does anybody have
an idea?

Yeah, I assume that a closer match would be safer.
I've also heard of complications with using foreign systems in
different regions. Supposedly, using a japanese system in North
America makes it draw more power than it needs... or something.
But as long as it works, I'd say just play it as is, unless you can
sort something out better in the future.

Thank you very much, and your post was most helpfull. We do not have a
radio shack here in rainy England, but there are similar stores so
I`ll shop around. I got the machine to power up using a 10 Volt 2000mA
adaptor, but I guess i`d be better off getting a better match than
that right?

Yes the specs are from my Turbo Duo power supply. My Turbo Duo`s
CD-ROM drive keeps failing and I even sent the power supply away to a
PC engine specialist repair center with the console and they said the
PSU should be fine. When we put a voltage tester on it at work, it
seemed to be outputting slightly more than 10 volts, but of course
thats not under any load.

Thats what i`m most worried about now, using a PSU that seems to be
quite a bit more powerful than the original from NEC.
As for the switch at the back of the console, I tried it in both
positions and it does not seem to make any difference. I read on
another forum that some games actually run better if the switch is set
to 2 as then they take advantage of the increase in the Supergrafx`s
CPU speed and suffer from less slow down.
The only game I couldn`t load was Bloody Wolf, which is a US turbochip
game. I tried with my adaptor but all I got was a yellow screen. I`ve
never tried the adaptor to convert US game to JAP console, only the
other way around, I guess I need a different adaptor?
Welcome to the Group!
Are those specs you listed from the poer supply that you use for your
Turbo Duo? Because the official Duo power supply's specs are:
Input: AC120V 60Hz 16W
Output: DC10V 1000mA
(+)--o)--(-)
But according to Turbo Zone Direct, you can use a power supply from
Radio Shack on your Duo that has the following specs:
Radio Shack part #273-1772
9V 1300mA
"Ask for a "Q" tip (don't let them charge you another $4.99, a tip is
included. It better be for $20.00.)
The tip must be center positive when you plug it into the adapter."
Now, just because it will work, doesn't mean that it is healthy for
your system in the long run.
According to member delbo_99 in a post 5 years ago:
"The official NEC PSU for the Super Grafx was the model # PAD-113,
its specs were as follows: Input AC100V 50/60Hz 16VA Output DC9V
800mA (negative tip)."
According to this FAQ-
http://einsteinsbreakfast.com/snes/docs/voltages.txt
-the Turbo Duo uses a positive tip.
So that might be your problem right there.
Personally, I'd try to find a suitable replacement at Radio Shack and
risk wearing the system down the road. Chance are you'll have to
replave the system eventually anyway.
However, if you can confirm at some point that the system is powering
on, there is one very important thing you must do. On the back of the
Supergrafx is a small switch. It looks identical to a channel switch.
What it actually does though, is switch the system between being a
SGX and a PCE.
If its set to be a SGX and you're trying to play a PC Engine game,
then you'll usually just get a white screen.
I hope that helps you out. Let me know if you have any other
questions.

Hi all
I`m new here and I just found this group while googling for answers
for this problem, so I thought I`d pick your brains. I have two PC
Engine consoles at the moment, a US turbo duo and a japanese
SuperGrafx. I recieved the Japanese SuperGrafx machine yesterday from
somebody on ebay without a power supply and I checked on the bottom of
the unit and it is expecting a 9Volt DC input so I took the power
supply from my Turbo Duo and connected it, put in my nearly new Jackie
Chan Jap HUCARD, turned the machine on but I cannot get anything out
of the system whatsoever (the TV says no signal, as if the console is
not even turned on, yes I have triple checked connections)
The specs of my power supply are (according to the top of it)
In 240V AC 50hz
Out 9V DC 1.4A
And the supply works perfect with my US Turbo Duo, can anyone tell me
if this should work with the Supergrafx too? I read you could also use
a Megadrive PSU but the connector from mine doesnt seem to be the
right size to physically fit into the Supergrafx.
Any help would grately be appreciated as I`m getting Macross
withdrawal since the CD drive in my Duo stopped working :)
The scene with Kabuki and Kikugoro having their "transforming face
off" was unforgettable! :D

You are one lucky bastard, Kabuki! Don't let Kikugoro find out about
these deals!
