The channels it play on are a couple in the 70's or 90's(it's been
years since I've used one with an RF switch).

Hey everyone,

I love the Turbo Graphics and all it's games. Recently, I acquired a Japanese
White PC engine console. However, I cannot seem to get it to work! I recently
purchased a new AC Adapter, and that seems to not be the problem. For some
reason, it is missing the RF modulator, so I'm using my old TG-16 one instead;
but to no avail. It still doesn't work, and I am out of ideas.

Could anyone offer a solution to my problem?

Thanks much.

I recently picked up a bunch more PCE flyers and have added 36 scans
to the Files section.

They're in the PC Engine Flyers folder.

Its all about developers.

Especially when a system doesn't have good enough development systems
or certain effects on hardware.

With the Turbo/PCE, the main thing lazy developers avoided was
actually programming seperate bg's or parallax type stuff.

Where as with the Megadrive/Genesis it was more like the turn of a
switch.

Of course the Turbo has it's strengths just like any console.

But just like how it still is today, publishers only care about
profit and rushed ports still continue...

Side Arms Special was one of my very first CD games, along with Super
Darius and Golden Axe.

I still had my mother pick it up for me during a trip to the States
(if it was available in Canada, it wasn't where I lived) because I
love the game so much.

It was one of the really great Turbo Express titles too.

Now with Mame, we can see just how arcade perfect it was.

Graphically, the only noticible difference at first is that the
Turbo's title screen logo is way nicer.

Too bad they couldn't have included 2 player mode though.

Yeah, as much as I like stuff thats 'evil' or dark, I still like
Alien Crush more than Devil.

It was one of the Turbo's early killer apps.

For me it's got to be Alien Crush...that game is completely Turbo all
the way...the glowing little pixels and the tiney music, it's great...

But I know what your saying about Aero Blasters, shooters were what
the Turbo did best and Blasters really delivered big time.

That sounds really cool! I've been planning to put a TG16/TB Plus
setup in a cabinet but, the Magic Engine sounds a lot better! Funny
you said something about comparing the ports to the originals. I was
doing that with a few games this evening and was actually a little
dissapointed that Galaga'88 wasn't as nice as the arcade version. I
know they could've done a lot better. Sidearms for instance is an
excellent port and even sounds better than the original as well as
many others. I sometimes wonder why some ports are almost dead-on
perfect while others look like they didn't even try.

I know just what you mean. There's just this strange feeling of
arcade nostalgia you get when you play TG16 games. It's really weird
but, cool too! SideArms is my fav as I used to play it at the arcade

The new MagicEngine should be out very soon.

Anyone else excited?

I hope it has high res-mode support(what is it like 512 x 240 or
something)?

If you haven't looked in on MagicEngine in a while and want to know
whats up, check out the homepage(listed in the Links section) where
you download a preview movie.

I'm probably even more interested in MagicEngineFX. Hopefully it'll
progress faster once MagicEngine 1.0 is released.

I still can't justify the cost to buy and ship a PC-FX system over
other Turbo/PCE purchases.

So I'm gonna buy ME-FX and then start to pick up PC-FX titles,
beginning with Tengai Makyo Kakutoden of course.

I'm also a big Zenki fan. If for no other reason, because the main
character is voiced by the 2 stars of Kabuki den and the theme is
sung by that famous j-popper who also did the Geisha Robo theme in TM
The Apocalypse IV.

The first time I set up my Duo in my new house, after not playing for
a while, I threw in the same game I always play first.

Aeroblasters.

This time I had planned to just see if my Kabuki den save files were
still intact. But sure enough, I was soon pulling out my Hu Card
binders and loading up classic games.

Anyways... the reason I always seem to play Aeroblasters first is its
one of the main games that really symbolizes the Turbografx for me.

Particularly my early days with it during its original run. When each
new game I bought was a major event and I played it nonstop for weeks-
months, completely mastering it.

Each time I fire up Aeroblasters its as impressive as the first time
I rented it shortly before receiving it as an X-Mas gift.

To me, it has equally perfect graphics, sound and gameplay, and all
very Turbo.

I've played Airbuster for Genesis/Megadrive several times and have
the arcade original in my MAME cabinet. But The Turbo version is
still my favorite(even taking into consideration it's technical
deficiencies).

There's just something about it.

Its like how the sounds of Ghosts N Goblins, Side Arms, and Wonderboy
define the feel of an Arcade(the place where coinops are) to me.

Once again I was just going to look at the first level for a bit.
Then I just wanted to see the beginning of the 2nd and here the music.

In the end I wound up making it to the fourth stage boss.

I'm proud to say that nearly all of my deaths were from off-screen
ships flying straight through me and not just bullets.

Anyone else have a special Turbo game that represents the system you
or you just find yourself coming back to time and time again?

I finally got around to putting Magic Engine in my MAME cabinet.

Ever since the early Turbografx-16 days, I've schemed of making some
sort of Turbo arcade cabinet. Originally it was going to consist of a
modified entertainment until, a TG16, Turbo Sticks and a TV.

Now I have the real thing.

It's a lot easier than pulling out my 80 odd Hu Cards when I just
feel like messing around with a few games,

Plus I can play all the demos in what feels like genuine video gaming
machine.

It's also alot easier playing Arcade Card games since my regular
setup consists of a Turbo Duo, Arcade Card Duo & Kisado converter.

I'll still play my 'real' Turbo Duo all the time.

But I can't deny how cool it is playing Turbo games in a cabinet and
being able to switch on the fly to original versions of arcade ports
to see how they stack up(most very well)..

The Bonk arcade game is finally supported, but it doesn't really work
yet. I can only make out some of the graphics and looks fairly PCE'y.

I can't say for sure if regular Duo or TG16 adaptors will work, but a
universal one does(I use a Naki one).

Your best bet is probably to just get some AV cables for your CGII
and see if you get a picture through Video.

I'm sure they're getting power...when I tried messing around with
the channels a few years back, the screen "snow" would change when I
turned on the PCE. The AC adapter I'm using is the one that came
with my portable CD player. Will a regular Duo or TG16 adapter
work?

All I want to do is play those two games!

If you're using an RF switch with a PC Engine, the channels it works
on are in the 90's or perhaps the 70's.

I don't remember exactly which, because it's been years since I've
done it and it was the same deal with Famicoms(but the famicons
might've been in the 70's).

Does the CoreGrafx II have am inch wide round AV out(I'm pretty sure
it does)?

If so, you can just go down to Radio Shack and buy a Midi cable with
a matching male plug and several female rca recepters on the other
end.

The one I'm currently using with my Turbo Duo has red, yellow, black
and green. It only takes a minute to figure out which are audio and
video(the extra female jack can just hang there) and mine has a
clearer picture than my official Duo cable.

Be careful if you look for one on eBay, I bought one or two
unofficial Duo/SMS cables from a crooked seller that give an awful
picture.

I'm pretty sure that the midi cable I use cost me under $10 CAD, so
it's a really good deal.

Sounds like you bought both consoles without any original power coords or
audio/video hookups. Is that correct? That would affect the value of what you
have. Also, are you entirely certain the consoles even work or are getting
power?

I bought two Sega games (OutRun and After Burner)for the PC Engine
over 5 years ago and I've never played them.

I've searched ebay for one of those adapters to play the PCE games
on a TG16 or Duo but have not been able to locate a "Kisado-card",
which I read somewhere is the best or most reliable adapter.

I have a PC Engine (white) console and a CoreGrafx II console. The
PCE connects by RF switch and the CGII is through an AV out.

I haven't been able to get the PCE to work with a US television, and
I don't have the CGII AV cable.

How much are these two consoles? I would prefer to trade them for a
Kisado card or a compatible AC adapter that works with these
consoles. I have an AC adapter that looks like it matches, but I'm
not sure if this is why I couldn't get either of the consoles to
work on a US TV.

I asked these questions before back in '99 but I forgot what you
guys recommended to me.

I just put together a quality vcd featuring the entire game of
Sapphire.

If you can't play the game for any reason, or just want to be able to
sit back and watch the thing without all the work, I'll send any
member a free copy.

All you have to pay for is shipping.

I've got it down under a half hour and plan to add Gate & Lords of
Thunder to the disc with a music menu, intro, etc...

I've updated the Links section.

Now everything works and has a title + description.

I'll be updating the Files soon.

If you're looking for a rom, cover scan, audio, etc... you can
request one and I'll either post it here or a link to the file on my
own webspace.

More updates are on the way.

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to announce the founding of what I hope will be a cool new
site. The site is called Old School Gaming Magazine and is located at
www.osgmagazine.com. It's [I think] a new idea for the online old school gaming
community. I decided that instead of making a content based site (since there
are already so many great content sites for so many classic gaming systems) I'd
be making a site that focuses on the news dealing with old school gaming. The
site will be covering stuff like game re-releases, emulator releases, classic
gaming website launches, interviews, and classic gaming website news (say like
nesworld.com were to add a new section). The site will also have forums (located
at www.osgmagazine.com/forums) for anyone who's interested. While the site won't
be open until September 1 (if you visit the site now you'll see what I mean) the
forums are now open. So if you're not interested then sorry to waste your time
with this e-mail, but I think this may turn out to be a solid online classic
gaming community.

Thanks for your time,
AndrewM
