Dear god, what in the name of hades did they do to that thing? Piss

Yeah, that's just downright awful. It's really a shame when people
let their games get like that.

Funcoland may have a lot of shit, but I often find a lot of mint
games there, too. And except for the handful of titles that they
charge an arm and a leg for, I usually get them for a pittance.
Talking NES stuff, anyway.

It looks like it was sitting submerged in liquid for awhile.

Maybe a homeless/differently-sheltered human person found the games
in the trash or a ditch somewhere and sold them for whatever cash
they could get.

Disgusting.

This is why I always avoid the FuncoLands of the world and buy from eBay only
out of necessity. There are so many clowns who smear their cartridges with
jelly/snot/ectoplasm and then proceed to sell them off.

Hi all, I guess I'm excited about imports now that I have zanacxzanac.
I just won an auction for a PC Engine but it doesn't come with any
games. I want to be able to test it when it arrives, so I'd like to buy
a real cheap game from one of you if you're willing. The cheaper the
better, I don't care too much which title it is (kieth courage would be

Hey folks,

I'm currently attempting to play through Xanadu without any knowledge
of the Japanese language (no small task). Right now I'm stuck on the
fourth area (the land covered in snow) and was wondering if anyone
could help me out. The FAQ on the TurboList page says to obtain
a "code" from the hermit regarding the stones arranged in circles -
the problem is that the hermit keeps slamming his door in my face,
making it hard to have a discussion with him, much less receive some
sort of code. I've visited the town full of "rabbits" and found
another cave with a few chests in it, but that's as far as I've been
able to go. Thanks for any help you can offer me!

Yeah, I went into the "allsoft" page over at Sony's website in Japan, and saw
that Taito released the game (curiousity forced me to wander over there).
I'd assume the game had the same modes as the Saturn rev...Lord knows the
manual is more striking on the Saturn end. It's actually more drab than the
lackluster PC Engine Super CD packaging (had to make this PCE-relevant
somehow). Speaking of Space Invaders, I was expecting Ving to transplant the
excellent Space Invaders '95 over to Saturn...but they never did (bummer).
However, they gave us wonderful versions of Taito's Bubble Symphony, Elevator
Action Returns, Metal Black, Mizubaku Adventure (still one of my very
favorite HuCard games, by the way...a great effort by Taito), and Night
Striker S, though, so I guess they made up for it.

> in the hunt was actually better on the ps than the saturn for some

> but "feels" better on the saturn.

Well...I agree also on In the Hunt (I have both versions as well); however,
there are some out there who prefer the PlayStation revs of the various
Saturn shooters. I recently bought the Cyclone re-release of Don Pachi and I
find it to be superior to the Saturn rev...so I think I'm going to go back
and experiment with some other PlayStation ports. I've been told that Do Don
Pachi is also superior...and everyone says that Strikers 1945 II is as well.
However, things don't always go so well...Geki-oh Shienryu should've been
judged by its initial price point...that was a poor port of the ST-V and
Saturn shooter. I expected better considering the obvious care that went
into the development of the original game. I'm curious to see how Warashi's
(the developer of Shienryu) Gatchaman vertical turns out for PlayStation this
month. It won't make up for their cancellation of Shienryu 2 for Dreamcast;
however, it does look appropriately old-school...and there's never anything
wrong with that.

hey Grant!

taito did release space invaders in japan for the ps, but for some
dopey reason, it never floated over here. too bad, as the disc had
just about every version of the game on it.

in the hunt was actually better on the ps than the saturn for some
reason- probably the only 2D shooter you could say that about (in
terms of psx/saturn ports)- 3 wonders is a fine port as well,
but "feels" better on the saturn.

oh, and i'll have to agree with you about gradius gaiden- got one
last week, and it's amazing- i prefer xanac x xanac a bit more just
because of all the play modes...=^P

Mike, no problem at all...glad to be of assistance. However, you might want
to go over to [http://allsoft.scei.co.jp/index.zolar] for a definitive
listing of all of the shooters which were released on the system. This is
Sony's site, and it has records for ALL of the PlayStation releases (first
and third party)...and you can search by "shooter." While it will give you
3D shooters and I believe light gun and first person shooters...you can
easily differentiate which ones are which. For most of the games, they have
the covers and backings, so you can check that out also. Also, I also highly
recommend going over to [www.shmups.com] if you have any additional questions
regarding shooters on the system or just shooters in general...lots of
knowledgeable folks hang around on the forum...and some of them collect the
PlayStation versions of multi-system shooters. Myself, I'm a Saturn whore
(when I'm not doing my PC Engine thing) and have all of the 2D shooters
released on that system, yet I have 34 2D shooters for PlayStation, so I'm
apt to throw it a bone from time to time. Speaking of, later on this month,
Hamster will be releasing Moon Cresta (the old Nihon Bussan arcade game) and
D3 will be releasing Gatchaman: The Shooting for PlayStation in Japan...both
2D shooters. Apparently, Gatchaman was developed by Warashi...of Shienryu
fame. They are both "budget" releases (I believe they are 1500 and 2000 Yen,
respectively), so they won't set you back hardly any green. NCS
[www.ncsx.com] is accepting pre-books for both titles...I confirmed mine the
other day.

Thanks for all the great info. I really appreciate you taking the time
to list the various 2D shooters for me. It's not that easy to find out
about them. I've found that the category "shooter" no longer means what
it used to...it could be a variety of games from something like star
fox, to contra, to unreal tournament.

Of course, I meant "3D" games. However, I did miss a couple of
Saturn/PlayStation ported shooters. I didn't bother getting Wonder 3 on PSX;
however, I do have both revs of Image Fight and Xmultiply. The Saturn
version is actually better (resolution is better); however, they both play
the same...and if you like crusty Irem shooters, the comp is recommended.
Speaking of Irem, In the Hunt, R-Types, and R-Type Delta were also released
the U.S. in their 2D glory on PlayStation also.

Too many to mention (a common misbelief by some that the PlayStation was only
about 2D games...these people need to import more often). You can always go
over to Sony's Japanese site to research what shooters came out and when;
however, I'll start you on your path by just listing the 2D shooters (or
collections which contained 2D shooters) which came out for Saturn which also
made their way onto PlayStation (or vice versa):

Bokan To Ippatsu! Doronboo
Capcom Generation 1
Capcom Generation 3
Capcom Generation 4 (yes, Gun-Smoke is a shooter)
Cho Aniki: Kyuukyoku Muteki Ginga Saikyou Otoko
Darius Gaiden
Detana! Twinbee-Yahoo Deluxe Pack
Do Don Pachi
Don Pachi
Geki-Oh Shienryu
Gokujyou Parodius-Da! Deluxe Pack
Gradius Deluxe Pack
Gunbird
Jikkyou Osyaberi Parodius
Kaitei Daisensou
Konami Antiques MSX Collection (volumes on the PSX, one collection on SS)
RayStorm (Layer Section II on SS)
Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus

Um...the only one I'm not certain if it came out on PlayStation, though, is
Space Invaders. Taito released it for Saturn; I have it. Still, that's just
Space Invaders. In my opinion, though, the best 2D shooter for PlayStation
(and exclusive to it) is Konami's Gradius Gaiden...so I'd recommend that
(yes, I like it better than Zanac X Zanac). Additionally, I'd also suggest
picking up the import Dezaemon Kids, which has a bonus disk which contains
102 or so sample shooters made with the software, many of which will remind
you of PC Engine games. While certainly lacking on the domestic side with a
rather spartan release of shooters in comparison to what came out in Japan,
Sony did bring over Seibu Kaihatsu's Raiden Project...which contains an
utterly fantastic rev of Raiden II.
