Geelw's got it all figured out.

Now,
although I'm the world's biggest Tengai fan... it's a
series that WD 'could' do a decent job on IF, they take
it seriously and actually TRANSLATE it.

They
could word alot of the humor in FEOE better than some
other companies.

Of course, the idea of WD
translating any Tengai still scares me because I know that
regardless of what they 'could' do, -they'd still fuck it
up.
Yes. Yes you are.

The thing is, the losers
at WD CAN write decent. They just choose to fill up
so many of their games with garbage that ruins
them.

Its made all the more apparent when you play a game
they took more seriously.
Don't forget the hour long Boss
battles.

The best is when after completing a bunch of shit,
you get to sit through a VERY long cinema, and as
soon as you get off the ship to the new land you're
thrown into a ridiculously disproportionately
difficult/long Boss fight, -without having any chance to
Save.

And if you make a mistake, or run out of magic, or
something... and end up dying, -you get to spend 30 min to an
hour just getting back to the hour long Boss fight.
well, i buy all of wd's stuff as well, but it's
only because they go all out in the presentation dept.
silpheed's packaging was awful because the foil reflects
light and makes it too hard to read though! at least
they're more consistent than squaresoft- the last few ff
games were good-looking, but so annoying to play
through. and between the way they treat their lesser known
(and in some cases, better) titles and the occasional
crap games that come out from them in japan (and
here), it's a wonder the fanboys haven't rioted yet-
lol!
the main problem, to dive a bit deeper, is mostly
timimg- in a lot of wd translations, you'll have the
feeling of a deadly serious sequence broken by too many
out of place in-jokes, and then all the other
characters respond with more in-jokes, then things get
serious again (until you reach the next town and talk to
people). tough boss encounters become more of the "oh,
great- he'll say something stupid right about...now"
affairs, rather than "we're fighting this battle for our
very lives". possibly the best uses of humor in
translated rpgs i think, have been in landstalker and the
shining series games, where stuff happens in the context
of the story for the most part, rather than in some
rewriter's old-ass fart jokes and dated cultural
references...=^P

imagine if wd ever did linda cube, far east of eden, any
goemon game, sakura wars, or langrisser/warsong- that
would be really scary...=^P
Man...I haven't thrown a controller since
Landstalker for the Genesis (too expensive to replace
them)...now THAT's a hard game :) As for Working Designs
games..I like them too..a LOT..even the kiddish ones. I
buy every game they put out..and most the kiddish
ones are from Treasure...so they kick ass in the
gameplay dept. I really think that whether they botch
translations or not, they really do put out a quality product
and that can't be said consistently for most
companies! BTW...anyone play Silpheed for PS2? It kicks
ass...but they even read the decimal points out loud in the
text...what's with that?
lol- i actually haven't thrown a controller in a
while ever since i was hanging out at a friend's place
and watch him bust his picture tube in a fit of rage
(playing the first turok on the n64). another friend got
attacked by his girlfriend's dog when he accidentally
beaned it while losing at street fighter- i wasn't
there, but i did laugh my ass off when i heard that
one...=^P
So, am I like the only one who likes WD's work?
Except for when they get silly/kiddyish. Course, I may
be the only one here who doesn't like anime of any
sort too.

BTW, the first few levels of Dracula
X are so easy, except the hidden boss of level 1.
Anyone here beat him without using the cross? Seams like
the wanted you to use that.
I don't have much of a temper. I haven't broken a
controller ever. I don't throw them either. My former
stepdad used to throw them all the time, and I got SO
sick of watching it. Games are tough. If they weren't
they'd be totally boring. A couple of places in my newly
aquired Sonic Adventure 2 had me stumped for a while
(i.e. Shadow vs Ultimate Lifeoform Prototype... EEK!).
FYI, Sonic Adventure 2 ROCKS! I dont care how "bad"
the voices are (I give them a lil credit cuz the
voices arent THAT bad, and they seem to have kept the
same actors between the 2 SA games) this game was one
of the all time best sonic games out there.
that's the problem with wd- they do what THEY
think is right or funny, without regard to the actual
translation. i'd pay more for a game that had an original and
"wd arranged" translation, just to see what i'm
really missing. stupid 80's pop references have no place
in a "serious" rpg, and, yes i know that japanese
rpgs sometimes have really obscure references or
unappropriate toilet/sex humor, but that stuff can be made
understandable under the right hands. cf2 is worth picking up,
the translation there wasn't too mangled- after all,
they left in that funny as hell bondage dream clip
(you'll see). the main problems with the game are the
constant random battles, loooooooooong load times, and
really tough enemies in the game. if you forget to save
and enter an area or dungeon unprepared, get set to
throw a controller or two when your party gets wiped
out...=^P
I enjoy Working Designs writing. I admit, they
let things get a bit too goofy sometimes, but they
are just trying to do what they think it right. I am
getting me an American copy of Cosmic Fantasy 2
shortly... any oppinions on it?
The EXACT same thing happened with me.

I
couldn't continue to put up with it after the Ice
world.

The PCE version's the complete opposite. If you have
access to it, you should give it a try.
Yeah, its so much better than the Sega/Mega-CD
game(which is also great).

It's just fun to play,
where as Working Designs' butchering makes the Sega-CD
game a pain.

The last Boss fight is designed
the way they should've done it in Ys III.
i actually never finished the u.s. version of the
game simply because it gets too annoying and no fun
after about the halfway point. i made it up to the last
area, but the game stressed me out so much that i've
never played it since...=^P

(that "translation"
didn't help, either)
a lot of people fell for that line of crap thanks
to sega of japan and some overzealous magazine
writers- once they found out the ps2 was going to be
backward compatible, news started floating around that the
dc could easily be made to run saturn stuff, which i
knew sega wasn't going to do, simply because at that
time no one was making new saturn software, and older
games were being sold off dirt cheap...=^P
Yeah, I guess that's true.. :) So, the rumours way back when the DC was comin'
out weren't true about them making software so you could run the old saturn
stuff on the dc eh?
Not sure -- I've not even seen the fisrt one. The
nicest books I've gotten lately is the Phantasy Star
Memorial Drama CD & Fanbook 2, Emerald Dragon Official Fan
Mook, Dragonslayer: LoH II Stratgey Guide (some nice
pictures) and Y-s Memorial, which isn't too bad.
Well, I finally managed to finish typing out my
Popful Mail walkthrough.

It should be up on
GameFAQS and my site shortly.

Its a completely
different game than the Sega/Mega-CD and SFC
versions.

It even has 3 more quests than the Sega-CD
version.

There's also alot more Role Playing involved, so a
Walkthrough will make a BIG difference.

I even listed
every item in every shop and translated the few
Menus.

Now anyone who has a copy or original and has put off
playing it can finish it without worrying about getting
stuck.

Its a waste is you paid a ridiculous price for an
original and don't even play the actual game.
there is at least one gb emulator for the dc, but
it pretty much sucks. i doubt someone would make a
pc-fx one for the dc, as frankly speaking, a lot of the
games weren't that spectacular, and all those people
who want to play those hentai adventure and board
games want the packaging (heh)...=^P
Okay, now I know they made a
Neo geo pocket
emu and a snes emu and I believe a genesis emu for
the DC. But have they made a pc-fx or saturn emu for
the dc yet? Any other systems emu'd on the dc.. such
as atari or colecovision? OR mabye even the
gameboy..
say- speaking of books- do you know if sega ever put out an game illustrations
book volume 2? i have the first one, and it's served me well, as far as
collecting some mega drive stuff...=^P
Hehe. Thanks for the comments -- I'm quite proud
of that one. The PSO one isn't bad either, although
the scrunched down thumbnail looks kinda
shitty.

The book I used for the Phantasy Star one was DAMN
expensive.
he's a regular martha stewart, that mda! cool stuff- i've got the phantasy star
on my pc now (i'm about to play ps 1 all over again later this month)...=^P
I put some custom-made wallpapers up on my site.
1280x1024 & 1024x768 -- some I put quite a bit of work
into, some I didn't. I think the Phantasy Star one is
the best. Check it
