Hmm.. nice club. I was browsing though the links
and noticed the site that showcased most of the
titles available for this system. Very odd, interesting
mix of games. Somewhat of a novelity system. Every
system has it's essential imports. What are the
essestial imports to buy for the PCE?

Hi Vince,
You have done a great job with the
introduction, I know that now, I personally know alot more
about one of my favourite systems. I hope that me and
all the other PCE/Turbo fans out there can contribute
and help make this club the success I think it's
destined for. It's a pleasure to be a part of it(as with
the neo geo club)and to discuss this great console
range that has so many formats! If there is any other
system that puts as much effort into quality and detail
it is the pc engine. I look forward to seeing this
club grow.

Let's get it on!
TAFKAneological.

Glad to see your club Vince. I dropped by the
DolphinLord's after seaching for a Duo. I had to read through
25 posts, och, my eyes still hurt. I must say you've
provided ALOT of information on the PC Engine/Turbo and
it's games already. You planning on writing a book on
the subject any time soon? I only wish the best for
this club. I was thinking earlier while playing Super
Star Soldier on an emulator, if the Neo-Geo is for
"The King of Fighters" then the PC/Turbo is "The King
of Shooters".

There's a surge of popularity of PC-Engine and
Neo-Geo games in Japan. As matter of fact, prices of
games on those 2 systems have gone up through the roof
for many titles, a lot of Japanese gamers even look
for games from US source as many PC-Engine and
Neo-Geo games are getting scarce in Japan while these
titles are not popular in US.

Just like what
I've mentioned before, many found out these games were
dveloped and released in the best gaming era (late 80 to
mid 90s) where game play and fun factor are on top,
not monetary interest. I can't emphasize this enough

After playing a few portable systems, I'm ready
to say that TurboExpress/PC-Engine GT is the best
portable system.

Let's consider the facts, it has
512 colors, runs on a light screen, and has the best
sound. The only other portable system that is close
behind is Sega Nomad but it can display much fewer
colors. Interestingly, Sega Nomad, just like
TurboExpress, is increasingly difficult too find. Perhaps
people start to realize that the 8-bit and 16-bit gaming
era is the best of all time.

Besides those 2
portables, I would rate the other portable systems as
followed:

Lynx
Game Gear
Game Boy Color
Neo-Geo Pocket
WonderSwan
Game.com

With the factors of games available for the
system,
uniqueness of games on the system (Game Gear are mostly
Genesis ports), and power of system.

I would
encourage other members to discuss over this and yes, feel
free to discuss other system, it makes this BBS a lot

Well, if the club takes off, yes I'll need a

from my experience in Dolphinlords Neo-Geo club, will
be an enormous task. The fact is, there're no 2
persons who will agree on every single issue, so I'll
simply keep the club going and see how things
go.

I'll only pick one cofounder since all it takes is 2

Now, let talk about the games made for PC-Engine
in Japan. It was started in a time when programmer
developped games for gamers, not financial interest. Just
like Neo-Geo, SNK and NEC and their third parties
producd only limited amount of copies on each title, part
of it was modest ambition, but it was also part of
old Japanese mentality where you made enough copies,
let someone play and resell them to other players,
passing on the same games.
Nowadays, companies like
Sony and Namco even tried to stop retailers selling
used copies.

Both PC-Engine and Neo-Geo have
among the best 2D games. While Neo-Geo brings out the
best arcade games, PC-Engine brought the rest of them.
It has most genres of games available. Some of them
are quite odd, such as simulation, mahjong, adult,
pachinko (w/ pachinko controller), puzzle, RPG (many
vriants), quiz, shooters (highest of any systems

We can first look at number of games made for all
of PC-Engine systems. In Japan, games were made for
the following formats:

Hucard
SuperGrafx
Hucard
PC-E CD
PC-E SCD
PC-E ACD

The first batch
of games were made at launch on October 30, 1987,
along with the upgrades, the last game made for the
system was Dead of the Brian 1&2 on June 3, 1999, so
overall, the system lasted almost 12 years with games
totaling 658, only Game Boy and Neo-Geo come this close as
far as length of system support.

For US
TurboGrafx/CD, they lasted 5 years (1989 to 1994), the last game
was Dynastic Heroes, and they supported the following
format:

TurboGrafx Hucard - 98 titles
TGCD - 19
titles
TGSCD/DUO - 19 titles

Which adds up to about 136
games, another reason TurboGrafx didn't fare well was
the fact that NEC put too much emphasis on sports and
platform games, while ignoring some killer titles in
Japan.

As far as PC-FX, the first 3 games relesed at launch
were Battle Heat, Team Innocent, and Sotsugyo II FX in
Dec 23, 1994. The system lasted until April 24, 1998
with the last title being Frst Kiss - Mnogatari. There
were a total of 62 games for the system.

I
respected NEC Japan for supporting PC-FX that long with the
fact that most gamers flocked to PSX and Saturn,
unlike Nintendo (Sega) who dumped Virtual Boy (32X and
32XCD) within 2 years after launch. BTW, Virtual Boy is
my 3rd favorite system after Neo-Geo and
PC-Engine.

Vince

Well, basicly, it's the US version of PC-Engine
released in 1989. As far as games are concerned, they
paled in comparison to the games Japanese players got,
but overall the average quality of games were still
better than NES and Genesis.

In 1990, NEC
intoduced TurboGrafx CD, same as PCE-CD in Japan. One of
the reasons TurboGrafx/CD failed miserably in the end
was the price point. Creating a good and large user
base for the TurboGrafx system was hard enough, at the
time, the system cost $200 in US ($300 in Canada), but
the CD add-on would cost a whopping $400, or $700
Canadian at the time with exchange rate of 1.2 CAD for one
US dollar, ouch!

NEC also introduced
TurboExpress in 1991, again, they were promoting a nice and
expensive product in a market which was very
price-conscious. With the price of a TGExpress (about $300), one
could get Super Nintendo AND Genesis.

In 1992,
just like Japan in 91, US gamers got Turbo Duo and NEC
dropped the price to $300, well, perhaps it was a bit too
late. On top of that, it alienated many gamers who
bought the original, expensive set-up, realizing they
had to buy Super CD-Rom card to play SCD games,
compare to people who would've just entered the market
and bought the Duo system for only around $300. Yeah,
they asked about $70 - $100 for the SCD card, which I
felt it wasn't fair to people who supported the system
in the beginning.

Here're the adaptors that
come in handy for TurboGrafx/Duo

SCD card- put
this on TurboGrafx and allows you to play SCD games on
TGCD

PC-Engine adaptor- the PC-Engine Hucard games don't work on
TurboGrafx so you need an adaptor to play Jp PCE
games.

Oh, yes, the CD and SCD games are compatible between
US and Jp systems. You can also plug Arcade card
with adaptor on Turbo Duo and play ACD games on you
Duo such as Fatal Fury Special, Strider, and more.

NEC actually created and released a 32-bit system
PC-FX, Dec 23, 1994, as a successor of PC-Engine. NEC
wasn't very ambitious about the system and planned to
sell only 50,000 units during the first year. Perhas
because of modest ambition, it could not draw major
developers and publishers to make games for the
system.

The only notable game developer was Hudson Soft and
the games were primarily animation based (ie Battle
Heat), which really limited appeal of the system.
Despite this, many enjoyed the system as a novelty, it's
one of the most unique systems around with computer
like setting.

With the advent of Super Famicom and Mega Drive,
PC-Engine was somehow affected, but it had not stopped NEC
from introducing more hardware.

Nov 16, 1990.
NEC introduced PC-Engine GT, this is, in my opinion,
the best portable system as far as graphics and
software selection is concerned (yes, even better than
Neo-Geo Pocket), the games actually plays faster and with
an addition of TV-Tuner, you can listen to radio and
watch TV on it.

To compete against the 16-bit
giants, NEC introduced PC-Engine Duo on Sept 21, 1991. a
combination of PC-Engine and Super CD which also plays
standard PCECD games. Most CD games went into Super CD
format after the introduction of Duo which do not work
on standard PCECD-Rom drive. The solution? Either
the Super CD card or get a Super CD-Rom drive. Super
CD-Rom drive was released on Dec 31, 1991, it was for
those who had original PC-Engine hardware who needed
CD-Rom upgrade. For those who already had original
PCECD, they had to buy Super CD-Rom card adaptor.

On the same day, Dec 31, 1991, NEC also released
PC-Engine LT. It was one of the most expensive systems ever

$1700). It's a portable system with the size of standard
PC-Engine. The screen is a bit larger than PC-E GT. In fact,
you can put this system with original CD-Rom box set
instead of standard PC-Engine and make it a portable CD
system, which feels just like a laptop.

NEC also

PC-Engine is a video game system created by NEC
and released in Japan in Oct 30, 1987. The system
came in the era of NES domination.

Although the
system is only 8-bit and very small and uses the
software of the size of credit card, it had demonstrated
great graphical capabilities with many more colors
(yes, even more so than 16-bit Mega Drive which came ut
later than PC-Engine). As a pioneer of technology, NEC
also introduced PC-Engine CD in Dec 4, 1988, the first
CD-based console. At the time, the price was out of reach
for far majority of gamers ($400 for an add-on), but
I knew many people got it (including myself) due to
Street Fighter, the first CD console game, Ys I&II, and
Tengai Makyo:Ziria.

Due to the poularity of
PC-Engine in Japan and the rest of Asia, NEC also
introduced the following PC-Engine Hu-Card
systems:

PC-Engine SuperGrafx - Nov 11, 1989:

Considered a
delux version of the card system, only 50,000 units
were made and were sold out immediately despite the
high prices. NEC originally planned to introduce many
SuperGrafx exclusive titles but the plan was scrapped. Only
4 or 5 such games were made, including Gouls n'
Ghost and 1943+

PC-Engine Shuttle - Dec 8,
1989

Considered an economy version of PC-E, it's grey and looks
like Jaguar. N upgrade to CD Rom is possile and it's
has few outlet in order to reduce the cost. When it
first came out, many were making fun of the system and
saying it's for those who couldn't afford PC-E but must
play them. Not now, I think this thing commands higher
prices on ebay than standard or Core
PC-E.

PC-Engine CoreGrafx - Dec 8, 1989:

Along with
Shuttle, NEC also released PC-Engine CoreGrafx. It''s
actually identical to the original white PC-Engine except
it's grey, instead of white. Its like a replacement
system of original PC-E.

Well, obviously, we can discuss everything
related to the games and hardware concerning PC-Engine,
TurboGrafx, and PC-FX.

I don't like to run a dedicated
NEC club (IMO, it's too boring), that's why I also
encourage discussions of other rare and/or classic
consoles, such as Neo-Geo, 3DO, Atari, Sega Genesis,
NES/SNES, Virtual Boy, Sega Master System, FM-Town Marty,
LaserActive, CD-I, Colecovision, Amiga-CD, and
more.

Plus, discussions of current development and gaming
trend such as PS2 and Dreamcast will also help compare
the past and present. I found by mixing discussions
of Turbo/NEC games w/ others, you get to appreciate
the games. This is evident with my Neo-Geo
club.

The bottom line is, I want everyone to feel
comfortable here and free to discuss gaming, and most
important of all, have fun.

Vince

Dear all club members:

I'd like to greet
everyone, I created this club simply because the lack of it
in Yahoo, by having a real club here,we can raise
interests and awareness of this great system (PC-Engine).
How can such a system go w/o a decent
club?

Many would ask me why I created a club for a dead
system? Well, it's not really dead, it's been given up by
NEC but there're many players keep goig back to the
games, particularly PCE-SCD games, it's considered the
best 16-bit system as far as qualiy of games and
graphic capabilities. This is the one of the only 2
systems that outlasted time (the other one is Neo-Geo)
and have the games' values going up.

However,
the main reason for starting the club is the fact
that TG-16 and PC-E games are increasingly difficult
to find, that Yahoo club will be served better,
unlike the mainstream systems which you can get games
and systems at your local BestBuy and WalMart. The
more people we have here, the more info and resources
we can pull together.

If anyone has anything
to discuss, feel free to ask and answer. Remember,
there's no such thing as stupd questions and answers,
every ?? and reply has its own merit.

Vince
