As new TG collector I just wanted to make a few
comments on key causes to the Turbo demise here in the
states. I used to read magazines like VG&CE, Game
Players, and then EGM relentlessly - here's some of my
analysis on its failure.

1)First of all, the Neo
had an over abundance of add-on hardware that
crippled its purchase value. I remember complaints about
the reduction in players: the NES and SMS came with
two controllers but the Genesis only came with
one...The TG took it one step further by only having one
port on the machine, forcing you to buy an add-on.
That, the turbo booster and the expensive CD (which
then had noticably low domestic product support)
crippled its apparent value in lew of the all inclusive
Genesis.
2) Where were the TV spots? Sure the old Genesis
commercials were silly ("Ge-Genesis Does...What Nintendon't")
but they sure put the product in the limelight with
then incredible graphics. I personally found the
Genesis print ads more attractive than NEC's, not to say
that they didn't impress me). [By the way, I have a
ton of old NEC adds from the early 90s if you want me
to scan them some time in the future]

3) Too
many system rumors! I remember hearing about a new NEC
devise every couple of months or so in the magazines -so
many that it killed my respect for NEC's product
support. The confusion on eBay now only illustrates the
confusion at the time. Nintendo and Sega both learned that
you've got to stick to your guns (core system) in order
to keep your fan base. In fact, I doubt any add on
system (Sega CD, TG CD, 32x, Sega Master Base Converter)
has ever been successful in the United States.

Anyway these are a few of my old positions, quickly
told. Anyone else have any opinions on the subject of
NEC history?

Bobak!
