Merlin Racing has been out since around November
28. Tempest 3000 came out early last week. Freefall
3050 A.D. was just shipped yesterday or today. I have
the first 2 and both are worthwhile purchases,
especially T3k. T3k is not just a game, it's an EXPERIENCE
that must be played to understand the full effect of
it. I just got done ordering FF3050 through DVD
International via UPS Overnight Express and hope to have it to
play by Saturday. Just thought I'd let the readers
here know that these 3 games are out. Though by now,
most of you probably already do, by reading the Nuon
Forum or Nuon-Dome websites.<br><br>--su700fan/wasted
I had and have high hopes for Shenmue (I'm a big
DC fan, it's 2D fighting Nirvana IMHO), but GameFan
apparently had some bad things to say about it, which
worries me.<br><br>Normally I don't put too much stock in
most of the rags, but in the case of GameFan, which I
truly regard as the last bastion of true, hardcore
gaming in the media (hey, they review Freefall for
NUON), that's not a good omen.
It's apples and oranges. VM Labs' business model
is so different from the others that you really
can't compare the two. Basically, profitability,
business survival, is the key. Due to way they've managed
to run things, that shouldn't be too difficult. By
having Motorola finance most of the development of the
NUON chip (for their own reasons, as they're going to
sell plenty of the Streamaster Mustangs as commercial
presentation machines/kiosks) and having others manufacture
the NUON-enabled DVD players, all they have to worry
about is software, that and the next generation NUON
processor...<br><br>VM Labs is not a huge company, and as such, they
don't really need to sell millions of copies of their
games to stay profitable, even though they might thanks
to the insanely low prices (as little as $21 new,
and that's by design...impulse purchasing). If they
can get out a steady trickly of software to the
consumers who will buy them, they'll stay in business, and
carve out a niche for themselves, which has to be the
first step...
well as a videogame system, probably not, but on the DVD side of things i think
it'll be around for quite a while. Personally, i'm sticking to my computer which
i can upgrade. <br><br>-XENOPHEAR-
To me, whether it does or not really doesn't
matter. On the Nuon I'll be able to play some truly
unique games like Tempest 3000 and Freefall that won't
be available on other platforms. I don't honestly
think it's going to be one of the big 3 of videogame
systems, but then again, that's not what its marketing and
design angle are. The Nuon is designed to primarily be a
DVD player with extra functionality over other DVD
players, part of which is game playing. And I own other
systems and will probably get the PS2 when they actually
have a game worth buying the system for (Read: Wipeout
Fusion). With the big boys systems all you end up getting
are the latest clone or version of Tekken, Zelda,
Mario, Sonic, whatever. At least there is some
uniqueness in some of Nuon's few offerings. I do have a
Dreamcast, and am happy with NFL2k1, NBA2k, Soul Calibur,
and DOA2. I also have a PSX with 15 games and an
Atari Jaguar with 45 games. In the end, it's the games
I'm really interested in for a system that determines
its purchase, not it's processing power or # of clone
games out for the system. And this is not meant as a
diss to other systems and their owners, just a fact.
There are those who chose to be sheep in this world and
eat whatever the mass media feeds them via
advertising (Britney Spears, Backend Boys, NStink, PS2, and
other over-hyped stuff), and there are people who look
for the out-of-the-middle, unique, interesting stuff
like music by independent artists (which is often much
better then record label releases) or technology like
Nuon. Not that it is always the case, but balance
between hype and reality is good to
have.<br><br>--su700fan
I have a question for all of the hardcore NUON fans out there: Do you HONESTLY
beleive that the NUON can survive agianst the Xbox, Dreamcast, Ps2, NGC? I'm no
=t dissin or nothing, just curious.
Last night at my local BFB (Best F**kin Buy, LOL)
I saw a display model and about 6-8 boxes of the
SD-2300 Nuon DVD player available for sale. The price
wasn't attached to the display but the salesperson
checked and it's $299. There also was a sticker on the
machine mentioning the free Next Tetris game via a
mail-in offer. Just thought I'd let those interested in
purchasing one in person know. If you're like me, you might
be a little wary about ordering online and would
rather purchase in person. But for the Extiva I couldn't
wait :)<br><br>--su700fan
AMAZON.COM has Tempest 3000, Merlin Racing &
Freefall 3050 A.D. available for PRE-ORDER at the bargain
price of $20.99 each. These will be available as of
November 18th. Do what I did and pre-order
ASAP!!!<br><br>To find them, just search for their respective names
under DVD. Don't simply search for 'NUON,' as you won't
find them. When I preordered Tempest 3000, it had an
AMAZON.COM sales rating of #2,607. It's now at #1,691, so
apparently there's some serious pre-ordering going on =)
I just posted a few pics, 5 screens of Titan 3
from the Tiertex site, as well as the case/box art for
the coming games (T3K, Merlin Racing & Freefall will
be available on November 14th). Notice the Atari
Fuji on the T3K box ;)
So far Price$hock has the Extiva for the lowest
price, $305.24 with no shipping costs (if you ship via
UPS ground). Pretty good price considering the
pack-in game (Ballistic), controller and remote (none of
the other DVD consoles have one packed-in
;)<br><br><a href=http://store.yahoo.com/priceshock/dvdn2000.html

Yet more on NUON is Columbia House DVD Club's
recent 'BUZZ' section: <br><br>NUON is "new on" the DVD
Horizon <br><br>The next few months will see some
extremely cool developments in the world of DVD. With
greater interactivity, improved features, and important
new titles on the horizon, there's a revolution
taking place - in a format that has already
revolutionized the way we enjoy movies at home. One thing is
certain - these new developments guarantee that DVD is
one format that will never rest on its already
impressive laurels! <br><br><br>DVD: The Next Generation
<br><br>Perhaps the biggest innovation to come along is NUON
Technology. Developed by Silicon Valley, California-based VM
Labs, NUON Technology promises to turn DVD players into
fully interactive video entertainment systems.
According to the company, the new breed of NUON-enhanced
DVD players - on sale now - will make movies even
more entertaining and interactive, with new features
such as links to the internet, and realistic
3-dimensional video games. <br><br>And when DVDs are enhanced
to take advantage of the advanced circuitry, DVD
fans can expect a bevy of new features and
improvements in their current favorite supplements. For one
thing, directors will be able to load up their audio
commentary tracks with photos, storyboards, screenplay pages
or any other graphics, superimposed over the movie
while it's playing. Searching with fast-forward and
rewind buttons will be easier with the "smooth shuttle"
feature. A special zoom-in feature will let the viewer
enlarge a portion of the frame up to 20 times - and then
pan & scan via remote control. Scenes can be
lightened (or darkened) with the touch of a button.
Finally, game-players will be happy to hear that NUON
cicuitry will be used to add extremely realistic 3-D
games, reference materials and edutainment programs to
their favorite movies. <br><br><br>The Future Looks
Bright <br><br>The technology supports both Dolby
Digital and DTS sound, and offers 16 million colors for
optimal sound and graphics. And with a built in Web link,
movie buffs can enjoy online communities devoted to
their favorite films and stars. NUON officials say a
handful of studios - including MGM and New Line - have
expressed 'keen interest' in NUON because the technology
will further heighten consumer interest in their
movies. Stay tuned... this is getting good!
<br><br><br>Features of the Future - Look for NUON enhanced DVDs to
offer some of these cool options: <br><br>+Smooth
shuttle: Scan your favorite DVDs forward and backward in
continuous motion. <br><br>+Scene Digest: A text summary of
each scene can be superimposed over the movie while
it's playing. <br><br>+Zoom-in: Select a portion of
the screen, then digitally enlarge and enhance that
frame, up to 20 times. <br><br>+Multi-angle: Jumping
from one camera angle to another will be smooth and
virtually seamless. <br><br>+Virtual lobbies: Communicate
with other movie fans on the Internet via your
NUON-enhanced DVD player. <br><br>+Diversionary games:
Realistic 3-D video games and educational programs will be
added to DVD movies. <br><br>+Advanced karaoke:
Improved graphics and sound will make karaoke come alive
on your TV screen.

Yeah, it's been a while. Most of us originally
found out about NUON way back in late '97 thanks to
Next Gen (remember the X crushing Mario?) and we
really thought it was going to be out by late '97. Well,
what I though VM Labs' plans were, building a great
gaming console, didn't end up being the case, at least,
not quite. NUON, or namely the DVD players (Extiva
and the SD3000)/set-top boxes (Motorola Mustang), are
capably of doing some nice things gaming-wise, I'm sure
of that, but their aim is a bit more mainstream.
There are going to be good games on NUON, probably more
than I expect at this moment.<br><br>As for when,
well, the Samsung Extiva is kind of on the market, as
CDW has shipped out some units. It's $349 with one
controller, a demo CD, remote control and a pack-in game,
Ballistic. It should be on local store shelves within a
month. Toshiba's unit looks like a late release this
year, probably November, in time for Christmas, when
more games are available.
Let's liven this club up with some different
colours, the default ones are really boring. So mw_carter
the Founder, in your Admin Tools bit on the left,
click 'Edit Colors' and then Customise. If you want I
can give you some HTML colour codes to use and I also
have a test club to test out colours and stuff in, so
I could put that in the colours I want for you to
see.
So I've heard :( If you haven't seen my long post
(rant) at the Ion Games forum you might want to also
read that (posted by my username "wasted"). Like I
said there, throw us a bone, man. Where the hell did
you get it from dude. I'm fiending pretty bad here. I
WANT MY VLM2. Please, Shaggy, atariwizz, whatever
other online names you have, tell us where you got it
and for how much. I've been chasing all over
everywhere with no luck. Thanks in
advance.<br><br>--su700fan/wasted<br><br>P.S. If it's any consolation to
me/poetic justice, at
least I'm playing Iron Soldier 3 on my Playstation.
Still doesn't make up for lack of VLM2 and T3k demo. :(
It was released last week. I don't know of anyone
that has one except myself, I wonder if people are
holding off. So while you've been away, theres been a lot
going on. <br><br>T3k is absolutely amazing. I just
wish I could play IS3...<br><br>"Shaggy"
Most people don't Know a thing about nuon, But
you stuck with it for what is it a year know My
PlayStation 2 club was at 87 members and was deleted it makes
me get choked up and want to cry a year of hard
workdown the drain ;( I wish I had it back right now.
Anyway when can I expect to see Nuon on the market.
What's been happening since I've been gone over here in
Germany? E-mail soon please.
If this has been covered before, my apologies. At
any rate, in Columbia House DVD's most recent
mailing, they included a one page "DVD Dictionary" to
define certain needed DVD-related definitions. Among
them:<br><br>NUON Technology<br>///"Interactivity" is the name of
the [3-D] game with NUON Technology! Developed by VM
Labs, Inc., NUON Technology turns DVD players into
fully interactive video entertainment systems. Already
there are products using this breakthrough technology
that can link your entire entertainment system to one
set-top box, allowing you to use the internet, listen to
CD's and play realistic 3-D games on one device. Soon,
NUON-enhanced DVD's will offer greater interactivity and
additional content as well.<br><br>Not too shabby, although
I wish they had mentioned the VLM-2...
If you're looking for a multiple gaming platform
message board with alot of emphasis on NUON, go to the
new iONgames Forums. Highly recommended layout and
some good topics so far. It could use some more
registered users though ;)<br><br><a href=http://forums.iongames.org
target=new>http://forums.iongames.org</a>
I just uploaded some new pics of various NUON
controllers & accessories by Hot Products (including one very
Dreamcast-like controller, complete with what they call the 'LCD
Memory Card'), a new shot of Motorola's Streamaster
Mustang I and finally, one shot of zGames' zCards (yes,
the 'Dogs playing cards' game that was rumored).
Enjoy...
(Cutting and pasting from a previous post...with
timely updates of course =)<br><br>NUON is an imbedded
technology that will be built-into consumer electronics
devices in the now very near future (the Extiva should be
out already...). The NUON processor itself, also
known as Merlin, is true 128-Bit architecture, with
benchmarks placing it around the same performance level of a
1 Ghz Pentium (that's 1,000 Mhz). It also supports
a slew of new 3D effects, such as plasma, advanced
particle effects, procedural texturing, phong shading,
voxel rendering and some real-time raytracing
(something an SGI workstation cannot do).<br><br>As for the
price, NUON should fall in the same price range as
current DVD players, so anywhere from $250 to $500,
depending on the model. Don't worry though, NUON software
will run on any model, whether it's the $250 (a
NUON-enabled DVD player) or the $500+ model (more aligned
towards a set-top box unit, such as STREAMASTER, which
should be in that price range and also incoporates a
Motorola PowerPC chip). As far as the games are concerned,
the hardware itself is identical, and VM Labs has
guaranteed that any game will run on any NUON-enabled
system. From a DVD player, to console, to portable, to a
possible add-on PC card, if the NUON logo is on it, it
will play the<br>games. And if $250 seems too high,
rumors also persist that there will be stripped down
console-like versions in the $150 range (Update: Don't know if
this will happen now, considering the strange course
of NUON. The Toshiba SD2300 should be around $300,
the Extiva around $400) - MWC).<br><br>As for the
games, well, companies like Capcom (NUON versions of
Resident Evil and Street Fighter are STRONGLY rumored),
Acclaim, Activision, Hasbro Interactive (they hold Atari &
Microprose), Psygnosis, TH*Q, CRAVE, etc. have already signed
on (who knows if any of them are working on
something - MWC). Very little has been revealed as far as
what games will be available though, with only shots
of Iron Soldier 3 and Tempest 3000 available. As of
late though, shots of aMaze and Titan 3 have surfaced,
so more should be coming in the near future (so far
the only games seen and near completion as far as we
know are Tempest 3000, Iron Soldier 3, aMaze, Merlin
Karting, Freefall 3050 AD & Myst (ugh...) -
MWC).<br><br>As for when, Toshiba will be releasing DVD players
in late 2000, with Motorola's STREAMASTER arriving
around the same time. There are several other
manufacturers, but they have not revealed when yet. One would
assume they would be released around the same time as
Toshiba's (as we know now, Samsung has also signed on, and
their Extiva/N2000's release is "imminent" - MWC.
