I have long admired the NUON technology, does anyone have an idea of
it resurrecting in any form besides its current "dead" form? I am
currently working on a project for the nuon platform, also when I
have time I am working on a prototype open source system. I would
like to incorporate the nuon technology into the system. I need to
find out where I can get a hold of boards and such that have
that "type" of technology in it. Maybe I will have to emulate the
nuon processor using a different one. If anyone has info that would
help I most welcome it.
Another site worth mention is www.nuondev.com. While there's nothing there that
you probably can't get at the NUON DOME, hey, it's another link. They do have a
forum there as well, though it's aimed more at the SDK and those hoping to
develop a game with it.
Warning: Long Post
Genesis Microchip terminated VM Labs & all of VM Labs employees. Here is what it
said on Nuon-dome about this:
VM Labs Terminated
Posted 7/25/2002 by K3V
I have been informed that VM Labs has been officially terminated, and all
employees have been laid off. An anonymous email I received stated:
"It will be interesting to see what happens to NUON since Genesis yesterday
fired EVERYONE from Vm Labs who was working on the project and killed the whole
division. Try to give anyone a call if you don't believe me. Everyone from
Richard Miller on down."No word on whether or not this will affect the NUON DVD
players currently slated for release from RCA/Thompson or not, or whether NUON
processors will be used in other future DVD players.
Here is more info about the termination of VM Labs:
More Details on the Elimination of VM Labs
Posted 7/26/2002 by K3V
Yesterday, Genesis Microchip released a report of their first quarter financial
results, in which they provided more details on the specifics with VM Labs. The
full press release can be viewed here, but below are the excerpts relevant to VM
Labs:
The company announced today that it has discontinued its development of products
initiated by VM Labs for the DVD player market. Approximately 40 positions have
been eliminated as a result of this decision.
The company acquired audio and MPEG decoding technologies from VM Labs through a
bankruptcy proceeding in March 2002. At that time, it hired a number of former
VM Labs employees to continue development work on certain VM Labs products.
"We continue to view these technologies as an extremely valuable part of our
overall technology portfolio, well-suited for use in emerging video and consumer
display markets. However, we made a strategic decision to discontinue the
development work on the specific products initiated by VM Labs," said Mr.
Donegan.
Pro forma net income differs from loss according to generally accepted
accounting principles. A schedule reconciling these amounts is included in this
news release. Differences include the exclusions of operating costs of VM Labs
operations, severance costs, the amortization of acquired intangible assets and
of deferred stock compensation expense, imputed interest on lease obligations
and related income tax adjustments.
The company expects to incur operating expenses for VM Labs operations of $0.7
to $0.8 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2003, as well as restructuring
costs of approximately $0.6 million to $0.8 million.
Last month it was report on Nuon-Dome that RCA was supposed to bring out 2 NUON
players are DRC300N & DRC480N (DRC480N would have progressive scan). These
players may not come out since since the deals with Samsung & RCA are no more.
Several NUON websites are no more. http://www.nuon.tv & http://www.dev.nuon.tv/
are no more (both of these sites lead to the TV Corporation that says that
nuon.tv is available for $1,000.00/yr *! ). You can still access the NUON
homepage at http://www.nuon-tech.com (doesn't matter anymore since no new
commerical games, NUON enhanced movies or pereferials are coming out anymore).
NUONTALK located at http://www.nuontalk.tv has been dead for the past several
months. But there is a NUON forum that is doing good, the forum is the Nuon-Dome
forum which has moved to
http://www.visualcues.com/forums/forumdisplay.php3?forumid=3 .
About the 4.5 MB barrier on NUON, Mr.X (Mr.X was once an employee of VM Labs
until Genesis terminated VM Labs) said in the post on the Nuon-dome forum about
the 4.5 MB barrier. Here is an excerpt:
The solution to remove the 4.5MB limit on N501 is a NUON.CD that has a new BIOS
embedded. This BIOS would enable applications to access data on the CD. A test
version of this solution did exist, however it will be hard to get to it without
Genesis. Genesis has the source code (and rights) to the firmware.
I think the N505/N504 euro player already have CD-capable BIOS...
Mr.X also explained about who Paradise IV was. Here is an excerpt from his post
on the Nuon-dome forum:
Paradise IV pretty much consisted of (former) board members of Genesis! These
guys made their money during the DIP financing period and walked away with a
couple of millions. Welcome to the twisted world of cooperate America ...
If you don't believe me then goto
http://www.visualcues.com/forums/forumdisplay.php3?forumid=3 , click on the
NUONtalk link, then click on the post that says VM Labs Terminated ( (Mr.X's
post about the 4.5 MB barrier is on page 2 of this post & his post about
Paradise IV is on page 3)
BTW: Rob Cheng is also on the Nuon-dome forum. Rob posted in the post titled VM
Labs Terminated on the Nuon-dome forum (Rob posted on page 3 & page 4 of the
post). If you don't know who Rob Cheng is, Rob Cheng worked for VM Labs. Rob
Cheng posted on NUONTALK about the NUON SDK before the SDK became reality.

Nope. There has not been any word on why www.nuontalk.tv is down. IMO, I
believe that www.nuontalk.tv is offically dead. I believe that Genesis Microchip
took down NUONTALK.
Look at it this way. There are still NUON players being made. In fact, a new
NUON player will be coming out. This new NUON players is from RCA & it is called
DRC300N. All new NUON players including the DRC300N have no game ports.

I agree with you there. I also believe that Genesis has no intentions
of promoting NUON or growing the NUON platform. If Genesis had any
intentions of growing the NUON platform then Genesis would be funding
the NUON games & funding the NUON peripherals. IMO, Genesis brought
the NUON technology not to help the NUON technology grow but to use
NUON technology in their products. IMO, the nuon.tv site was severly
stripped down because Genesis has no intentions of bringing out the
NUON games & NUON peripherals.

So it looks like the end of NUON maybe upon us.
It does seem that way, sadly. I don't believe that Genesis Microchip

patents related to DVD and video, and maybe hire any talented

If anyone's interested, I've still got several links to NUON fan
sites over on this page:
http://www.gti.net/hysteria/nuonline/links.html
Of the fan sites, NUON-Dome seems to be the only one that is still
updated on a regular basis. Most of the other sites listed there
haven't been touched in months. Admittedly, even my own NUONline site
hasn't been updated for almost three months. Perhaps I'll do one
final update someday, to serve as closure to the whole story of the
rise and fall of VM Labs.
Hopefully, this group here on Yahoo! will continue to exist, just in
case NUONtalk.tv is shut down or the domain becomes abandoned by
Genesis Microchip.

Hi,
Recently there has been several NUON applications that have been released
recently.
You can download the applications from
http://www.nuon-dome.com/media.html just look for the listing that says
Downloads and Files:
To play the applications you must have a CDR or CDRW on my computer & you must
own a Samsung DVDN501. A CDR or CDRW drive is needed because you must burn the
applications to a CDR or CDRW.
In case anyone is interested, one of my old
favorite forums is back around, iONgames forums. These are
fully customizable (avatar, sig, etc.) are pretty busy
to boot. Some decent NUON discussion too, in a
multiplatform post. Check it
out...<br><br><a href=http://www.iongames.org/forums

Has anyone tinkered around with the serial ports
yet? I took one of mine apart to see if the devices
are USB. To my dismay, I found only a single IC on
the mini circuit boards which is a custom VM Labs
"Polyface" ASIC. <br><br>Examining the SDK a little closer
reveals that you have to use the communications bus in
order to communicate with the serial bus. The 48 pin
Polyface chip takes input pin voltage representing bits in
the 4 bytes of packet data and handles all of the
necessary protocol for communicating on the communications
bus (which could be serial, but thats
irrelevant).<br><br>It would be possible to piggyback the controller by
directly soldering wires to the button contacts but the
debounce circuitry of the polyface chip would limit the
maximum transfer rate to about 60 bytes per second
(assuming 30 switches per second, using 16 digital input
pins).<br><br>Somehow I suspect that the chip is meant to be used for
all serial bus peripherals, not just game
controllers. This would imply that debouncing can be turned
off and there are probably 16 to 32 input pins since
the communications bus is 32 bits wide. The chip
probably has an integrated ADC since the analog joystick
in the logitech controller didn't appear to have any
ICs attached to it which would mean that the
connector is feeding the input pins an analog signal. If
the ADC can be switched off, these input pins could
be used for transfer as well<br><br>So, if anyone
has played around with the serial port, let me know!
Any and all would be NUON developers need to go
to <a href=http://dev.nuon.tv target=new>http://dev.nuon.tv</a> and check the
new SDK out.
They have one sample ware available for download and a
UBB development board up where VM Labs employees will
be giving a helping hand. Check it out. Oh, the SDK
is a 29MB download, so be prepared
;)<br><br><a href=http://dev.nuon.tv target=new>http://dev.nuon.tv</a>
VM Labs has screens and cover art for Bust-A-Move
4 now up at the www.nuon.tv site in the GAMES
section. With arrival "In Progress," it might not be too
long before we have another quality title. <br>I will
try and get the higher res screens downloaded and
converted to JPEGS to post here soon.
A petition has been started in order to persuade
VM Labs to support development of BattleSphere for
NUON. If you liked BattleSphere on the Atari Jaguar,
then sign the petition so that an improved version can
be brought out on NUON! If you're not familar with
BattleSphere, then all you need to know is that it's one of the
most intense space battle games ever, with lots of
action, a dose of strategy, and even multiplayer modes
supporting up to 32 players on 16 linked consoles!<br><br>Go

VM Labs recently released a firmware update for
the Samsung DVD-N501, which is supposed to address
some audio/video synchronization problems and other
minor issues. You can download the update, burn it to a
CD-R according to the instructions, and use the CD-R
to update the firmware in the DVD-N501's flash
ROM.<br><br>Here is where you can download it
from:<br><br><a href=http://www.nuon.tv/updates.html
target=new>http://www.nuon.tv/updates.html</a><br><br>I don't have a DVD-N501,
so I couldn't try this
myself, but I've seen some people on the Internet claim
that it has worked well for them.
The thing about T3K is that it basically keeps
the gameplay intact, while adding just enough to
thicken the mix ;)<br><br>There are new enemies, some of
which are real buggers, some really nasty new webs,
rotating webs (triggered by one of the new enemies, once
you get rid of it, the web returns to normal), the
addition of the ability to HOVER (which replaces T2K's
jump), new weapons (HOMING MISSLES), etc. Quite a bit,
not to mention the new tunes (and the T2K Soundtrack
remixed versions of the old ones), which do add quite a
bit. And the graphics, well, you'll see them soon
enough.<br><br>As for DVD players, well, right now the NUON ones
are quite affordable. The Toshiba SD2300 (only 8 VLM
effects...ugh) has been dropped to $249.99 at Best Buy, with the
Samsung N2000 (Extiva) as low as $219.99 on-line. The new
Samsung N501 has already hit selected store shelves, and
is available for as little as $189.99. If PRICE is
the main thing, you might want to wait for the
Oritron DVD900, which should hit at less than $150, and
will undoubtedly be the best Oritron model available,
pciture-quality and otherwise.

transparencies and shading appear nicer. <br><br>Space Invaders
XL is a bit of a let down. I was expecting a port of
the Playstation or N64 version at the very least, but
instead it seems to be a nearly pixel-per-pixel port of
the old Super NES game. While that isn't a terrible
thing in terms of gameplay, graphically, well, this
isn't the game to play when you want to show someone
what your NUON-enabled DVD player can do. Ballistic

Aside from that, e3 is coming up, and while VM Labs is
not exhibiting there this year, they have made known
that they will make several big software announcements
during the course of the show. K3V over at the NUON Dome
has caught wind of these and has stated that NO ONE
WILL BE DISAPPOINTED. If that is indeed the case, this
will be the first e3 in 4 years where disappointment
concerning NUON did not occur. Cross your finger...
Congratulations on your new purchase. Hope you
enjoy all the extra DVD features (minus the screen fit,
which is pretty useless). And if you're into games, be
sure to check out Tempest 3000 and FreeFall 3050 A.D.
Both unique games with great gameplay AND graphics.
VLM2 is also killer, especially in Random Energy mode.
Hi,<br>I just brought my first Nuon DVD player.
It is the Samsung DVDN2000. Amazon.com is selling it
for 219.99 & I brought it. I just got tired off
waiting for the N-501 & Oritron DVD900 to come out. Now I
own a Nuon enhanced DVD player.

been on the market about 7
months. Studios obviously weren't going to release DVD's
with NUON content on them when there weren't any
players that could play them. They adopted a "wait and
see" attitude to see if (first) machines incoprorating
NUON would actually be released (and not be relegated
to vaporware), and (second) if sales on these
machines were good (so that they could justify the time
and money investment to add NUON features). Now that
both of these criteria have been satisfied, you are
starting to see NUON-enhanced movies coming
out.<br><br>Yes, only one title has been announced so far, but
this is just the tip of the iceberg. I am certain more
titles will be announced soon. DVD Review, who just
recently gave high praise to the Toshiba SD2300 in their
review of that machine
(<a href=http://www.dvdreview.com/html/toshiba_sd-2300.html
target=new>http://www.dvdreview.com/html/toshiba_sd-2300.html</a>), hinted that
at least five studios are working on
NUON-enhanced movies.<br><br>Now, here comes the even better
part. VM Labs anticipated that people like yourself
would question the usefulness of NUON enhancements if
they could only be applied to DVD's designed
specifically for the hardware. So, they made it possible for
certain NUON features to be applied to ANY DVD movie--a
very wise decision, indeed. The onscreen menu
overlays, smooth forward and reverse scanning, smooth zoom
(with filtering and anti-aliasing), multi-angle
thumbnails, and strobe view are all available when playing
ordinary discs.<br><br>As far as other features go,
there's the video game playing aspect, which people have
already discussed in other messages here. I agree with
the other posters who said that there is nothing
wrong with the quality of NUON games. The quantity is a
different issue--there are only five games out now, and
roughly 20 others scheduled to be released this year. So,
anyone buying a NUON deck solely as a gaming system is
going to have a very limited selection of games.
However, since you have a PlayStation, this shouldn't be
an issue, because you can always buy games for that
system. If you do get a NUON player, I would still
encourage you to try some of the games, because they are
very good (especially the NUON-exclusive
games).<br><br>If you like listening to music CD's, then you'll
love the Virtual Light Machine (or VLM for short). The
original VLM was a popular feature on the Atari Jaguar CD,
and now it's even better on NUON. In a nutshell, the
VLM creates beautiful lightshows on your TV screen
that accompany the music. The graphical effects are
reactive, and change in accordance to the tonal qualities
of the music. You might have seen similar lightshows
with audio player programs on your computer, but I
think many will agree with me that VLM is among the
best.<br><br>Now you have plenty of good reasons to buy a
NUON-enhanced DVD player!
