Thats great.  I saw it was out for the XBox.  I did not know that it was going to come out for the PC.  I will haft to get a preorder out on it I guess.  Hope that it is as good as HOTD2.  I have not been able to find a cheap copy of HOTD1 to try out yet.

Other than the version in MAME,which you'd need a supercomputer to play, are there any other versions of CarnEvil out there for the PC?And has anyone heard when House of the Dead 3 will be out for the PC?

James,

My first question to you is what operating system are you using? The
Virtual gun only works with Win98 and WinME, it will be recognized
by WinXP, but it does not work.

Hope this helps.

CRT-based light guns (for TVs or computer monitors) do not project any light.  So you won't see any light coming from the gun.  See (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightgun) for a good explanation of how light guns work.  Most (if not all) light guns on the market use the second method described on that page.

As for why your gun isn't working, I have no idea.  Have you tried it out on a regular computer monitor?  If you ever get it working, please let us know what your solution was.

Hey guys,

Psyched to see there's a light gun forum alive for Mamers.  Getting
info is like pulling teeth these days.

So - purchased a Lik Sang Virtual Gun off of Ebay - can't get it to
work with my mame cab.  I'm running off of an arcade monitor via
Andy's Arcade VGA and Jpac.  Tried all res and brightness -
nothing.

Beginning to wonder if the gun itself is broken.  Should I actually
be seeing a "light flash" from the barrel of the gun when I pull the
trigger?  Or a red glow, something?  I get zip.  Maybe the gun is
broken.  Or maybe its not compat.  Figured I'd make my first post
here as moronic sounding as possible :)

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

You guys were right.  I fired up Mame32 .84 and it worked great.  I do not know why Act Labs does not have a simple post about that on there site.  I looked for almost a hour B4 I found a link to here.

I could not even find the link to The Troubleshooter again on their site.  (I need to get a donation headed to him)

Then the prob. was fixed in under 20 mins. after the post.

Thanks again guys.  Hope that I can return the favor some day.

Be sure to use the "House of the Dead 2 Config" program to set both Player 1 and Player 2 inputs to "Keyboard".  The Troubleshooter disables mouse input in the game and sends simulated keystrokes to make it fire and reload.  So if Player 1 is set for mouse input (which is the default), then you'll get the exact situation you're decribing.

As for MAME, the most recent versions of MAME seem to no longer support the dual TV guns.  I don't know if this is temporary (i.e. a bug that needs to be fixed) or if they decided to remove that functionality permanently.  I can't seem to get anyone on the MAME team to respond about that.  The best I can suggest is to use an older version of MAME or MAME32.  Version 0.84 is the last working version I know of.

Hey all.  NEWBE here.

Anyways, I receved my new Act Labs TV out light guns about 2 weeks
ago.

The prob that I am having is with HOTD2 I can only get one player at
a time to work.  I have tried the trouble shooter.  If I use it, it

Under Mame32 I can get player 1 to work fine, but I can not figure
out how to configure the controls to get it use player 2's gun.  I
can get the fire button to work but I can not figure out how to get
it for aiming.

As far as software versions Mame is .89 and HOTD2 is Activion Value.

Any help or ideas would be great.

Jon,

Thanks for quick response.

I am using ver 2.2.

Tried HOTD2 last night with my wife and it seemed to work fine.

Before playing I did disable/enable troubleshooter and recalibrated
both guns. (I probably had player 2 gun poorly calibrated.)

On sourcecode, I was just curious to see what you did and I
understand you've got structural changes that would probably make
current code nearly unrecognizable to code with ePSXe support.

Thanks for everything.

Tom

Are you using the latest version of the Troubleshooter? (Version 2.2)  Previous versions had a bug that causes problems with simultaneous players.  Unless you've discovered a new bug, version 2.2 should handle simultaneous players flawlessly.

Jon,

Thanks for all your work on the troubleshoooter.

I have a question/problem.

I have Explosiv's version of House of the Dead 2, I set it up with
the troubleshooter for 2 Act-Labs TV USB guns. They both work pretty
well, but sometimes player 2 can't fire unless player 1 fires first;
also, both players don't seem to be able to fire simultaneously (I
don't know if that's even possible.)

Do you have any ideas why this is?

I was also curious if you had ever considered releasing your source
code, I am interested to see what you did for my own curiousity (I
don't want to steal your work.)

Thanks for any assistance you can give.

I've already pre-ordered it from http://gameplay.co.uk.  It was initially supposed to come out about a month ago.  I was very disappointed when it got delayed. I'm glad to hear it's still coming though.  Thanks for the info!

No problem Jon, you don't have to apologize. I understand you
perfectly, especially when you have a job, family, friends and other
things to do and not enough free time. However, I'll just put a
little pressure on you to work on Troubleshooter for ePSXe but
friend renember to enjoy your weekend.

I think that if it works will be a great news for PSX emulation and
an open door to export to other emulators like Chankast (Dreamcast
Emulator) so I'll expand lightgun games catalogue.

Hey there,

Yeah, I'm still around.  Work on the Troubleshooter has been slow going - partly because I've been busy with other things, and partly because, well, I've been lazy.  Sorry about that.

However, now that you've asked about it, I will put in some extra effort.  I'll try to get you a test version for ePSXe some time this weekend.  If I fail to do so, keep asking about it.  I work best when I know people are interested and it's not just for me.

Of course Jon, I'm totally ready just call my name (I can't wait to
put my finger on the trigger). I also have another PSX light gun
games like Point Blank Series.

As always you're the number 1. Congratulations for your work,
specially when it's done in your free time because I know how harder
it is.

I think this is gonna be a great news for emulation scene.

See you soon.

It's not quite ready for distribution yet, but here's an indication
of how close I am with ePSXe: I have just successfully played a
game of Time Crisis with my Act Labs gun!

There was a slight problem with the scaling - my shots were not
going precisely where I was aimed. And I need to tidy up the code
that attaches the Troubleshooter to ePSXe. But it's close... real
close.

As it is, I only have Time Crisis to test it with. I'll be on the
lookout for some other PS1 light gun games to experiment with. I'm
hoping that I don't have to write a separate configuration for every
individual game, but that this will instead work for the emulator as
a whole.

I will be happy to put up a beta testing version when it's ready, if
anyone's interested (I'm guessing you might be, Sharp Shooter).

Happy Thanksgiving to the Canadians! Happy Columbus Day to the
Americans.

Does anyone have the Xplosiv Software version of House of the Dead 1?

I'd like to know if that version works with The Troubleshooter.

Time, time, time... It's all a matter of time, and finding enough
of it to keep working on the Troubleshooter. Lately I've been too
busy with my "day job" (which on occasion has become a "day-and-
night job"), and I also went on a two week vacation. I only just
recently started tinkering with the Troubleshooter again this past
weekend.

I haven't given up though, and I still do intend to add ePSXe
support, hopefully in the next couple of months. There are a few
technical issues I need to work out, but it still looks feasible.

I'm also working on "Starsky & Hutch", which supports light guns on
the consoles, but only a mouse (relative, of course) on the PC.

When I get my hands on "House of the Dead 3", that will become the
highest priority.

I'm glad to hear people are still interested though. It keeps me
motivated. :-)

My gut feeling is that it probably wouldn't work. Just as the PC
Monitor guns don't work on a regular TV, and the TV guns don't work
on a PC monitor, even though they are both CRT displays. I suspect
that HDTVs probably work differently enough that they wouldn't be
compatible with the light guns.

Still, I could be wrong, and if anyone has the means to test this,
I'd be very curious to know the outcome.

Personally, I'm keeping a close eye on the upcoming "universal light
gun" from E-Real Games ( http://www.erealgames.com/aboutrgt.htm ).
Their web site states that it will only be for PS2 and XBox, and
they make no mention of the PC. However, a while ago, I read a
report about this gun when it was demo'ed at E3, and the report said
it would work with a PC. I can certainly envision many
applications for this technology on a PC, even for non-gaming use
(it could be the ultimate replacement for the laser pointer when
making PowerPoint presentations, a real point-and-click mouse!).

If they don't make a PC version of it, I wonder if there's any way
to plug a PS2 or XBox light gun into a PC and make it work somehow.

From SharpShooter:

Hi everybody and welcome aboard.

An excellent idea from Jon so we can continue sharing everything
about our favourite light guns. I'm specially waiting for ePSXe
light gun support. Jon, could you forward some news about it?

See you soon.

Hi I'm thinking about getting a light gun for the pc in particular
the Act Labs TV USB Light Gun. I read most everywhere that light
guns don't work on projectors, projection tvs, tft displays,
umm...plasmas and lcd tv's so my question is what about CRT based
HDTVs? I've never had one but i was wondering if maybe you can
switch the input of an HDTV to standard TV with interlacing and get
the light gun to work? If not does it work regularly on HDTVs?
Thanks,

Welcome to the PC Light Guns forum!

I created this forum as a fallback in case the Act Labs forum
disappears for good.

While it is primarily for discussion of the Act Labs Light Guns, it
is not by any means restricted to Act Labs products. There are other
PC Light Guns out there, and there may be more in the future. Here
is where we can post reviews, discuss features, availability,
hardware and software compatibility, new games, etc.

This is also where I will announce new versions of The
Troubleshooter. ( http://thetroubleshooter.home.mindspring.com )

I hope you find this forum useful!

Regards,
Jon
