I have been searching the net for info on a perticular mod that i
want to do with little or no sucess. Is it possible and if so how,
to tun ROMs on the NES itself rather than through and emulator on
the PC. I have seen some mods that actually mod the circuitboad
inside a cart so that it has connectors to enable upload to the
RAM/ROM but i find it very confusing. Basically all i want is to be
able to play ROMs on my NES. Any help that you can provide would be
greatly apprtiated. Thanx
From my understanding, different NES games have different memory
mappers that each functioned differently. I think you would have to
design a seperate flash cart for each memory mapper that exists if you
wanted to play every game that exists. I believe that there are a total
of 256 different mappers out there. There's no disk system that reads
the roms that PC emulators use. Not like the SNES, which had lots of
different floppy based copiers, one of which I own. I think you're
better of sticking to your PC emulators or, better yet, actually buying
the carts.

If you look on ebay you can find actual nintendo controllers that have been made into a usb controller that your emulator can use. I use it to play the newer games that hobbyist are writing and some older ones that I own the carts for. Very nice solution and no blinking screen.

The only problem with the top loading NES is its lack of AV ports. I
found this site http://www.gamesx.com/rgbadd/nes2avmod.htm which
shows you how to do it (most people should know of the site). But I
dont have the guts to pull my top loader apart. It took too long to
get one and I dont want to risk pulling it apart yet.
By the way http://www.gamesx.com/index2.htm is a great mod site. It
has mods for heaps of systems and lots of information.
If your nervous to do it you could always just buy a polystation and use an adaptor to play nes games. That was my solution. Works nice and has a famicom slot built in.

Is this what you are talking about

I might look into trying to get one.

Yep. You can get similar ones from 411toys.com. Theres are smaller and look like the smaller ps1 but the same general idea. I know I like mine and would be reluctant to give it up. You can get the neccessary adaptor from ebay or lik-sang. Another cool idea would be the time machine attachment for the gba. It's basically a famicom clone that plugs into the cart slot of your gba sp. Looks cool. I have a portable famicom now but I'm not happy with it. I'm tempted to try one of these though.

Hi all.
I'm kinda new around here, but I've been looking for info on a certain mod.
I've heard that there is a mod out there that will clear up the graphical
glitches in a top-loading NES, which will make the video quality just
as good as the toaster (assuming you already have the A/V mod done).
Apparently, all it needs is a 10 cent capacitor.
Does anyone actually have this mod? I've never actually heard a success
story on the top loading NES, just a few with the Tristar 8. Is this a
possible
project, or just wishful thinking?
Thanks for your help.

Oh WOW I'm green with envy!
Not only is the Toploader just plain shibby... but that price is AWESOME!

Nice pictures but there are a few corrections you'd need to make. Well, a lot.
The lockout chip is wrong, it's the one right between PPU and the AV out. The board marking CIC next to the chip IDs the lockout chip. The chip you have marked as the lockout is actually a 7404 (or variants) and they are basically hex inverters. You might want to add that the 2 large chips between the cart connector and the CPU/PPU are the SRAM chips. Both are 2K each.
You might want to note the main board is rev 11 (the number is next to PPU as "NES-CPU-xx" where xx is the rev number) Rev 11 has problem with 3rd party unlicensed games and unlicensed famicom adapter, they won't work at all. It was Nintendo's attempt to block them. A simple fix is to snip pin 4 of the lockout chip. From the picture, pin 4 is on the bottom of the CIC chip, 4th pin from the left.
Rush n Attack cart should be CHR ROM and not SRAM chip and the other large chip is the PRG ROM. CHR ROM contains the graphic and interfaces directly with the PPU (few NES cart don't have this) while PRG ROM contains the main program.
The 2 little chips on the top are mapper chips using off the shelf logic gate chips. This were common before Nintendo developed MMC chips.
Thanks for all that information. The pictures arent on one of my
websites so I have no control over them. It was just a link to a
page that I thought people would be interested in.

Good Afternoon!
I am starting into a hobby of modding game systems, and my geeks
and I are pretty excited over it. Does anyone have some suggestions
on how to go about wiring lights into the NES board? I want to run
the lights straight off of the same power, so any suggestions on what
kind of lights to use, how to wire them and so on would be great!
Thanks!
(also, please keep the "you're an idiot and will fail" comments to a
minimum... I'm well aware of this already, thank you. :) )
Don't use small light bulbs, go to radioshack and get
LEDs. They're easy to wire up and they use
signficantly less juice than bulbs do. You can get
them in differet colors.

With the NES lockout chip mod has anyone totally removed the chip
then cut the leg of the chip then replaced it? Also has anyone tried
installing a switch so you can turn the chip on and off?
All it takes is two pieces of wire, and something to
put between them to keep from shorting the circuit. I
recommend using a round toggle switch from radio
shack. That way you can drill a hole instead of
cutting one. It makes for a much neater or not so
hacked appearance.

If anyone here installs a switch remember to have the
switch either on or off before turning on the nes.
flipping the switch with the nes on could cause it to
freeze and you would have to restart your game.

Why would you want a switch in the first place? Won't your modified nes play all games once the lockout chip has been disabled? I have a famiclone which obviously doesn't have a lockout chip and it play all of my nes games just fine. Did I just get lucky?

There are a few unlicensed NES games (such as the Camerica games) that may not work without the lockout chip. Personally I just snipped pin 4 off and left it at that as there aren't any unlicensed games worth playing (well, Tengen Tetris but they work fine)

Hey guys. I've been lurking for a while, but figured it was time to
chime in with one of my auctions:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&cate
gory=62054&item=8128653305
It's an NES that I did some modifications on for an upcoming book of
mine. It has a blue LED (done the right way with the proper
current-limiting resistor value to prevent the LED from burning out),
lock-out chip disabled, and a new 72-pin connector. The book will have
details of these hacks, among other things for a bunch of other modern
and classic systems. I'll probably have one or two to give away to the
group, too :)
That's it for now!
Joe
