Building a very simple joystick interface for DE1   Message List

I've been looking at Tobiflexx's schematics for the add-on board and it seems a
bit out of reach for my null soldering abilities. So I've been thinking if this
simple, simple connection will do:

DB9(Joy A) DE1(GPIO)
========= =========
1--------39
2--------37
3--------35
4--------33
5--------31
6--------40
7--------11
8--------30,12
9--------34

Notice no resistors seem to be needed. Will it work?
All I need is JOY-A for tests now, so...are the other connections really
necessary for JOY-A only?

Thanks!!
