Last January Freeverse announced it was working on a Mac port. I've
read recently that they are making progress. Also, on page 64 of the
December 2006 MacAddict there is a full page add for HOMM V for Mac!

Of course I went to the freeverse web site and there is no news there.
Anyone here of anything?

I haven't played for ages and definitely not since I got a G5, so I
can't answer this. However, I know I had problems with Windows Media
Player (solved by changing the default) and I have heard of others who
had sound problems with games (apparently solved by opening Audio Midi
Setup). Try finding the preferences and deleting the relevant plist(s).
There is a quite useful discussion board you can find via the Apple site
that might help.

Here is a link for some medium sized maps for HOMM IV. Some of them are
pretty cool, actually, the whole site is great to gleen from;

This is the best site I've found so far...Celestial Heavens seems to
link to another site to download from which is inaccessible for me.

Prior to buying a new Mac, I've been asking my Apple store a lot of questions. They say the newer Macs do have Classic. So, I asked, can I use my old disks to install OS 9.2.2? No, they said. Can I have it on my external drive? You can put what you like on your external drive, but the G5 will not boot from it.

So, whatever G5s have, it's definitely not the same as the older OS 9. Maybe it's a cut-down version, but the shop told me that some apps and games will definitely not run, and nor will my scanner.

My current addiction is The Sims - the old version with the millions of downloads available - and I have one disk that is OS 9. Aspyr, who produce the game, say that although I might be able to install by dragging from my external drive, there is still a chance it won't run on a G5 and off to swop the disk for $US5, which I reckon is pretty good. As you know, 3d0 no longer exists and even when it did, was totally unfriendly to Mac - I remember writing to them (I think about the proposed HOMM5) and was told they considered Mac totally unimportant and that, living in Australia, I should consider myself lucky that I had a copy of the game at all!

Have you tried the Yellow Pages of your phone directory? I can see you
might have problems with older versions of HOMM. I have an old G4, which
means I still have OS 9 installed. HOMM3 runs fine for me under Classic,
but, now I am thinking about a G5, and am investigating, it seems there
are a number of programs that will not run under Classic without OS 9
being installed, and you can't have OS 9 on new Macs. Actually, they
probably would run, but of course you can't install the program in the
first place. Re. another game, Aspyr has told me it might be possible to
drag games I already have installed from my external hard drive.

Heroes III and Heroes III Complete do not run natively in OS X, but
they run perfectly through Classic. Many people have been wishing for
an OS X native version of Heroes III, but, from the story I heard, that
is not likely to happen.

How do I find if I have a local Apple Store? Is there
a directory
of Apple Stores somewhere???

I tried eBay but I could not find anything. I did
another search right after I osted that and I found 2
copies of Heroes of Might and Magic IV for auction and
then I found some others for auction when I changed my
search from Heroes Might Magic Macintosh to Heroes
Might Magic Mac. That made a big difference.

I just upgraded to OS X Panther and now I can't play
Heroes of Might and Magic. I wonder if Heroes of
Might and Magic 3 is OS X friendly

You don't create 'scenarios' as such in HOMM3, at least not on the Mac.
You can create 'random maps' though, that you can specify quite a few
parameters for. In the 'New Game' screen, just click 'random' and then
look at all the options available.

I tend to create mine with X-large, no caverns, 7 opponents, no teams, no
water. Occasionally I will create an 'islands' map, though I prefer the
ground-based ones.

I like to play a new map at 'easy' mode, which I always win unless the map
generator messes up and creates an impossible map (sometimes a land-locked
city with no local resources and no way out without Fly or Dimension
Portal). I then play a second time at 'Hard' and a third time at 'Expert'.
Every once in a while the maps looks winnable at 'Impossible' and I will
try that too, though I have only won on maybe half a dozen maps at that
level.

Really, I like both, but HOMM4 lacks the auto-generator, so I downloaded
lots of maps and found the main Homm playing community likes their games
pitched a level I find too hard. I like to have FUN, not play war games,
so 3 is more to my taste, but I do like the magic system in 4.

I still play HOMM 3. I didn't like 4.

I went through all the scenarios twice. Now when I play, I use the
auto-generator to create a large, single layered map (I don't really like
the caverns below -- they take too long for my tastes). I can win about
99% of the time in 'normal' mode, and about 70% at 'expert' mode. I don't
use any of the cheat codes though, and forgot them years ago.

Any specific questions, other than for cheat codes?

Hello,

I was playing the Mark of the Tiger scenario, and I killed all the trolls (the
orange
player), but the computer never said I had eliminated the orange player! In
fact, I
killed everything on the screen, captures all the towns the resources and
everything.
Any ideas? Anyone seen this happen?

Thanks,

Allan

hi, does anyone know where this patch is hosted? The ftp for
3DO doesn't work, and the gamespy website requires a
subscription to download it. that's BS.
Thanks.
