So, how many people have purchased HOMM IV? Looks like it's $44 at
MacMall. Anyone find it cheaper?
People are talking about it being slow. What sort of machines (speed,
memory, OS version) are people using?
Thanks

I'm impressed you got back to me so quickly. I'll try turning off the
music and keep hoping that patch will come along soon.

The game is pretty slow in 10 as well, but the pause before each creature
moves was only a few seconds, not close to a minute for me.
The AI is horrible too. They can't do anything.
I believe a patch is in the works. Please contact 3DO's customer support to
improve the chances of things being fixed by a patch.
Some tips:
Turning music off helps a lot.
Ok, that's about all the tips I have.
Good luck!

Well, it took me a while because 3do won't ship outside N America and
their 'international page' was all phone numbers, but finally
Mac-o-rama shipped me Heroes IV, and I had my first play yesterday.
Anyone else got it? The game's fine, but for me at least it was v e r
y slow. Especially the combat screen - like it takes almost a full
minute between each creature's move.
I tried reducing the monitor resolution as suggested in the manual,
but that had no effect at all. I'm playing under OS 9.2 and I wondered
if it might be better under OS 10. Anyone tried?

Wow! Thanks for that. This is the best email I've had all year - I'm
reduced to random now I've exhausted every scenario on the disk.
Unfortunately, they are not shipping outside North America and their
international page is still 'under construction' so I've had to email
them.

Oh, and all Heroes games were published on the Mac by 3DO, the same
publisher who does all of the other versions. All 4 games in the series were
ported by somebody else. A guy named Gary Osbourne ported Heroes 1, I forget
who ported Heroes II, John Morris at his one-man operation, Evolution
Interactive, ( www.evolutioninteractive.com ) ported Heroes III and Heroes
III Complete and was at one time expected to port Heroes IV, but got into
some disputes with the Heroes IV head programmer and also took on a job
writing Java Cell-phone games at some company in Hawaii, so Evolution
Interactive seems to be pretty inactive right now. (you can read about all
of that on the EI site and on my site).
Heroes IV is being ported by Chris Jacobson and Bill "Burger" Heineman at
Contraband Entertainment. The game is being ported with the latest updates
that were released for the Windows version of the game, including
Multiplayer and a Map Editor. The maps and save files will be compatible
across platforms, but Mac-Windows multiplayer will not work because the
original developers chose to use DirectPlay for the networking code.
The estimated release date on 3DO's website is Late November.
I hope that answers everything.

Has this group folded? Has everyone started on Heroes IV? I still
haven't finished Heroes III, "Heroes Complete", and I'm stuck again.
Any tips on Shadow: Unholy Alliance would be very welcome.
The Astral Wizard site has closed down, although it's still accessible,
but they never completed the Shadow campaign. The next best site seems
to be Celestial Heaven, but they're totally rapt in Heroes IV.
Help someone - if you're still there.

I figured it out for myself in the end: option-point (Windows: right
click) on the sword. Idiot me had been clicking on the padlocks or
(left) clicking on the sword.

I haven't had this at all - not even on the original Erathia CD. I have
a G4 with 192 MB, so maybe it's a memory thing. Mind you, I'm having big
problems at the moment: yesterday my System Folder became 'unblessed',
ie the computer wouldn't recognise the System File. Took me 2 goes at
reinstalling and I'm still trying to get my email settings right!
RobB
Hmm... it seems like they're sending it to everybody but me. :)
Fortunately, somebody was kind enough to send it to me. :)
I noticed the mouse movement thing as well, but I figured it was an issue
with the operating system. Either way, it is a minor detail and not
something that bothered me at all. Thanks for posting the fix anyway. It
will probably end up on my website in the future.

I haven't had problems with either of these games crashing on me. I wonder
if you might be close to the minimum memory the game wants?
But yeah, the Heroes III and Heroes III Complete games are very stable
compared to a lot of what is out there. The game has crashed on me a
couple times, but it's not a common thing.

Well yes, Heroes III is a VERY well-behaved game, except like
clockwork it freezes up and you have to reset the computer after
you've been playing for about, oh, 4 hours non-stop =) Which is
not uncommon for this game...
Haven't had the time to see if this happens on Complete yet..
Yes, that's the main reason I got it. 3DO was quite expedient
about replying too. I sent the email request on Friday evening,
and this evening when I got home from work the patch was in my
Inbox! I assume they don't work weekends.. =)
And yes the resolution bug is fixed! Yay!
There is one thing though that they never seemed to address in
Heroes III or Heroes III Complete... and that is the issue of the
mouse movement stopping all animations. You can see this
most when you have clicked to move and hero, and while he's
trying to ride his horse move the mouse around. This is, of
course, easily fixed. Each time you start the Heroes III
[Complete] application, switch to windowed mode, then back to
fullscreen. Mouse movement no longer freezes the animations!
Yay!

Well, if you start a new Restoration of Erathia Campaign game and
choose Spoils of War first (that's the fortress/stronghold campaign) the
game will just crash. There is a workaround for this bug which
is to play one of the other two campaigns (Long Live the Queen or Dungeons and
Devils) and then go on to Spoils of War (since those three can be played
in any order). So it's not totally necessary.
Thanks for that. I have applied for the patch, but it's a long time since
I played the Erathia campaigns and I did play them in the 'correct' order,
so that's why I had no problem. I think I must have read something about
this at the the astral wizard site:
http://www.astralwizard.com
I would like to have the patch just for the resolution message. It's very
annoying in multiplayer games when you want to go back to the desktop.

On the other hand, the more people that request, the more likely 3DO is to
put it on their site so the people who do want it don't have to go through
this hassle to get it. The resolution bug is really small, as anybody can
press the Enter key to make the message go away. The trade with allies
bug, however, sucks. If you're playing an allied game online and try
trading with your ally, the game may just crash out on you.
You are right though, Heroes III and Heroes III Complete were very well
behaved games. I guess that's why the patch fixes such minor issues -
because there aren't any major issues that need fixing. We can only hope
3DO will hire the same programmer to do Heroes IV. It's nice having games
that don't crash.

I have kept your message with the url on my machine, but how
necessary is this patch? At the moment, I'm still stuck on Playing
With Fire: Burning Of Tatalia, and I can't remember whether I've done
Spoils of War or not. So far, I haven't experienced any problems at
all. In fact, Heroes III, even the original Erathia CD, has been one
of the best behaved games I've ever had.e
Once again, the site I run will change appearance and name!
This happened around this time last year as well, so perhaps
this will become a tradition.
The new site will not contain "Mac" or anything apple/macintosh
related in the title. The focus of the site will be on strategy. I will
still cover macintosh issues and events, for nobody else has the
knowledge or interest to do so, but I want people to think of it as
a strategy site, not a macintosh site, because that's really what it
has been for the past year.
Other sites announce windows specific patches, mods,
tournaments, etc without their sites being named "Windows
Heroes" so I don't think this site needs to have "Macintosh" in it's
title just because I will talk about Macintosh-specific things at
times.
Please feel free to post any ideas for names, and here's a
couple ideas I had that you can comment on:

Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete
Version 4.0.1 Update
March 2001
Thank you for updating the Heroes of Might and Magic III
Complete game. This update corrects some known issues that
should make playing the Heroes III: Complete game even more
fun.
* Game now correctly runs Spoils of War campaign.
* Trade with Allied Heroes in a multiplayer game no longer
randomly displays any memory errors.
* Inadequate Video Settings dialog no longer appears when
running in Millions of Colors.
This patch has been floating around 3DO's offices since this
spring, but they chose not to release it because they the demand
was (supposedly) low, and it would cause too much trouble if
the patch inadvertently introudced new bugs to the game.
However, they have e-mailed it to some people who asked for it.
If any of these issues bother you, you can fill out their support
form and request it."
So, the update that was completed in March has finally seen the
light of day. Apparently, if you fill out their support form and
request the patch, they may send it to you. This is according to
one person who recieved it in an e-mail from 3DO. I filled out the
support form a couple days ago myself, but have yet to recieve a
response. The form is here for those who would like the patch:
http://www.3do.com/support/mac_support.shtml?PAGE=
mac%2Femail.htm
It is not available for download on their site at the moment. They
said this is due to low demand for the patch.

It was months ago I played those scenarios and I remember the Festival of Life
ones to be vexing. I can recall being stuck and frustrated as you say. I
remember having to save the game alot and tried some risky gambling strategies
of
basically taking a mega army under my strongest hero and taking the enemy towns
(losing my own towns as I could not defend them) and basically conducting "hit &
run" type raids on the enemy's towns to get their troops on day 1 and then
vacate
when they came back with their stronger armies. This strategy -- after many
tries -- eventually worked but it made for some very weird games where my towns
were continuously being lost, conquered and lost again. You need to play those
scenarios guerilla warfare style in order to win.

Hope it helps. No-one has leapt in so far to offer me help with Clan Wars
(Armaggedon - Festival of Life) which I have been stuck on for a month. It's
one of those ones that start easy and then, in about Month 2, they start
attacking you. When (and if) you beat them, they just run away, so you have to
face them again, and although I have 4 Level 20 heroes carried over from the
previous scenario, I just can't afford to keep them all equipped with armies.
