Don't know yet if this is free, but Sandisk website has a document
describing a reference source code library with low level drivers as
well as a FAT16 file system interface.

... as ... Unfortunately it is not free. SanDisk commercializes the SD software tool Kit (SDDK) for some thousands of dollars. I do not know why they do not...
