FEATURE INTERVIEW:
BEHIND THE MOONSTONE WITH AMARAIS FINA

Fishwrap recently interviewed Amarais Fina the fen healer, while she
was on duty at the Northern Hospital.

Amarais Fina says, "I'd be happy to give an interview, but I'm pretty
boring compared to most of the people you talk to"
Amarais Fina says, "I have been rather busy with healing folks today.
Lots of repeat customers"
Paramedic asks, "There are 5 questions to this interview. Ready?"
Amarais Fina says, "sure"
Paramedic says, "Ok thanks, and welcome to "Behind the Moonstone" with
Amarais Fina"
(Amarais Fina giggles)
Amarais Fina says, "I'm glad to be here"
Paramedic asks, "1) Where do you prefer to do your healing?"
Amarais Fina is of the People, is female, is a Healer, and is not
wearing the symbol of any clan.
She is holding a moonstone and a mounted rat.
Amarais Fina says, "Well I'm mostly a south forest kitty. But I find
the northwest forest to be quite exciting. Now that there is a hospital
there too I will probably spend a lot of time in both"
(Paramedic nods)
Amarais Fina says, "I'd say I prefer healing in nice safe places :)"
Amarais Fina says, "But occasionally I like a nice exciting challenge
heal"
Paramedic asks, "Do you find the wounded to be different in the
northern and southern hospitals?"
Amarais Fina says, "Definitely. There are some who frequent both
hospitals, but most are separate groups it seems"
Paramedic says, "That's interesting."
Amarais Fina says, "I find a lot more of the newer exiles in the south
forest."
Amarais Fina says, "And a lot of metal mongers :)"
Paramedic says, "Ahhh"
Paramedic asks, "in the south you see lots of people headed down to the
T'rool mines?"
Amarais Fina says, "yes"
Amarais Fina says, "there are a lot of mine rescues lately"
Paramedic says, "I've noticed that myself."
Amarais Fina says, "although most of those who hunt the mines can
manage ok"
Paramedic says, "Those mine passages can be difficult and crowded with
beasts."
Amarais Fina says, "occasionally they run into something tricky."
Paramedic asks, "More risk-takers in the north?"
Amarais Fina says, "Yes. The north is very risky"
Amarais Fina says, "The path is not open to all"
Amarais Fina says, "Yes"
Amarais Fina says, "All rescues are tricky for me"
(Paramedic listens)
Amarais Fina says, "I'm not a very strong kitty"
Amarais Fina says, "But I'm fast on my feet"
Amarais Fina says, "I find that most of those who frequent the south
forest area are happy to lend a hand"
(Paramedic listens)
Amarais Fina says, "Which makes the rescues down there a lot more
effective"
Amarais Fina says, "Just today Ragin' Cajun was helping me look for
fallens"
Amarais Fina says, "And Ezi helped distract some nasty vermine while I
got iTornade up"
Amarais Fina says, "I couldn't have gotten iTornade up without him"
Paramedic asks, "It's harder to get people to the northern hospital,
and there's less traffic there, yes?"
Amarais Fina says, "Well, it's hard to say about the traffic"
(Paramedic listens)
Amarais Fina says, "I haven't spent much time here yet. It was actually
pretty busy in the last few hours."
Paramedic says, "That's good news. I'd like to see healers here more
often."
Amarais Fina says, "I find that there are less different people up
here"
Amarais Fina says, "But they seem to need help more often :)"
Amarais Fina says, "so maybe it evens out a bit"
Paramedic says, "Interesting."
Amarais Fina says, "Those surprise giant ferals and boloks and maha
seem to be more common here"
Paramedic says, "that leads to the next question"
Paramedic asks, "2) What sort of animal bites are most difficult to
heal?"
Amarais Fina says, "Deadly crawler"
Amarais Fina says, "hands down"
Amarais Fina says, "at least in the NWF and SF areas"
(Paramedic listens)
Paramedic asks, "Worse than maha bite?"
Amarais Fina says, "mahas are nasty"
Amarais Fina says, "but they generally don't render exiles unhealable
in my experience"
Paramedic says, "Yes, i agree."
Amarais Fina says, "deadly crawlers have a tendency to knock exiles out
on red and generate very difficult injuries"
Paramedic says, "I've seen many people left in very bad shape by a
crawler attack."
Amarais Fina says, "Also, deadly crawlers tend to last longer, so you
usually have to spend your time running around avoiding them while
healing"
Amarais Fina says, "Whereas maha can be taken out more quickly with a
small group"
Paramedic asks, "How about these oddly poisonous lizards up here in the
new north forest?"
Amarais Fina says, "The lizards are troublesome"
Amarais Fina says, "They don't stand still and they seem to like to
walk around the bricks to bite the healers"
Paramedic says, "I hate when they bite healers."
Amarais Fina says, "But they generally don't render exiles difficult to
heal"
Amarais Fina says, "I hate being bitten by them"
Amarais Fina says, "But I find they're generally not hard to avoid
except when you're trying to heal someone"
(Paramedic listens)
Amarais Fina says, "People rarely fall to them luckily."
Amarais Fina says, "I will say that the fallens in the northwest forest
seem to be alone less often"
Amarais Fina says, "That makes it easier to get them up because there's
usually someone to help clear or distract"
Paramedic asks, "3) What advice do you have for new exiles on how to
hunt and stay alive?"
Amarais Fina says, "Hit and run"
Amarais Fina says, "it's a critical skill"
Amarais Fina says, "Definitely go hunting with a healer when you can
and try to stay near safe areas"
Paramedic asks, "Too many of them keep fighting when they are badly
wounded?"
Amarais Fina says, "Yes. They often don't have a good feel yet for what
level of injuries prove dangerous"
Paramedic says, "Yes, definitely; bringing a healer or two with a
hunting party is always a good idea"
Amarais Fina says, "It's often not a problem because they're with
strong groups"
Angela is now Clanning.
Paramedic says, "but then they go out alone..."
Amarais Fina says, "But then they take those tag-till-you're-dead
skills into smaller weaker parties"
Amarais Fina says, "yep"
Paramedic says, "but then they go out alone...or with a small
group....and they get clobbered"
Amarais Fina says, "Exactly"
(Paramedic nods)
Amarais Fina says, "A big part about being effective when hunting, is
knowing which tactics to use where"
Amarais Fina says, "Also, toe-to-toe fighting rarely is effective until
they start to learn to brick effectively"
Amarais Fina says, "A lot of new exiles haven't learned how to deal
with their balance well."
Paramedic asks, "Can you explain for newer exiles exactly what
"bricking" is?"
Amarais Fina says, "Bricking is when you stand and take the hits from
something you're fighting. Generally by standing toe to toe with it"
Amarais Fina says, "It generally isn't very useful to brick unless you
are very difficult to hit"
Amarais Fina says, "Or you're already dead :)"
(Paramedic nods)
Amarais Fina says, "Really, it's not truly bricking unless you can act
as a brick wall and not take much damange"
Amarais Fina says, "Or if you have a healer who can heal you fast
enough to keep you up"
(Paramedic nods)
Paramedic asks, "And you mentioned balance - any suggestions there?"
Amarais Fina says, "Hit and run again."
Amarais Fina says, "It's best to hit when you're at closest to full
balance."
Amarais Fina says, "You actually get more benefit from one hit then
running just out of the way of the creature and recovering balance than
two hits in a row"
Amarais Fina says, "Unless you can't effectively outrun the creature"
(Paramedic nods)
Paramedic says, "I see too many exiles try to get into all-out fights
with beasts and lose near the end because they are exhausted"
Amarais Fina says, "Yes. I don't pay much attention to my balance
because I don't fight much. But I have learned a lot from my fighter
friends. The most effective ones know how to hit and run effectively"
Amarais Fina says, "One more tip: when running from something faster
than you, use vermine armor"
(Paramedic listens)
Paramedic asks, "Can you explain vermine armor?"
Amarais Fina says, "Yep"
Amarais Fina says, "If you're running from something you can't run
faster than"
Amarais Fina says, "try to find a rat or vermine or something else
which doesn't hit as bad or hard and get it between you and the
creature"
Paramedic says, "Excellent point."
Amarais Fina says, "orga, rats and vermines make the best vermine
armor"
Amarais Fina says, "I use it quite frequently when I run into maha and
boloks since I can't outrun them"
Amarais Fina says, "Also good when healing exiles"
Amarais Fina says, "If you can get the rats to block the bigger
animals"
Paramedic says, "Often, I will run behind wounded exiles and act as
armor myself and sometimes it seems to perplex them"
Amarais Fina says, "Yes, there is great confusion over the 'protect
healers' tradition"
Amarais Fina says, "Exiles learn they're supposed to try to protect
healers"
Amarais Fina says, "So when they see a healer trying to protect them,
they feel them have to protect the healer instead"
Amarais Fina says, "and you get into a protection tug of war"
Amarais Fina says, "very dangerous"
Paramedic says, "and that can lead to trouble if they are badly
wounded"
Amarais Fina says, "exactly"
Paramedic says, "Sometimes exiles don't realize that I can take a few
hits and am trying to protect them while they are badly wounded."
Paramedic asks, "OK, 4) What suggestions do you have for new exiles on
how best to deal with healers? How to share, etc.?"
Amarais Fina says, "Definitely share your healers when they are healing
you"
(Paramedic nods)
Amarais Fina says, "Most newer exiles don't understand why this is
important"
Amarais Fina says, "They don't all know that when a healer heals
someone, the healer loses some life in the process. Less is lost when
you are sharing with the healer healing you"
Paramedic says, "Exactly"
Amarais Fina says, "I think most people know they're supposed to share
the healer healing you"
Amarais Fina says, "But they don't always know why"
Paramedic says, "healing someone who is not sharing is quite draining"
Amarais Fina says, "It's difficult to shuffle shares quickly in battle"
Paramedic says, "Indeed"
Amarais Fina says, "And you don't want to toggle someone else by
accident and make them think you need help"
Paramedic says, "And that also is a problem"
Amarais Fina says, "Another problem is that when there are a bunch of
healers it's tricky to know who to share"
Paramedic says, "yes..."
Amarais Fina says, "so you should definitely share those healing you"
Amarais Fina says, "If only temporarily"
Paramedic exclaims, "yes!"
Paramedic says, "Good point."
Amarais Fina says, "I do think some exiles don't want to share healers
just a bit because they're afraid it'll annoy the healers when they
unshare"
Amarais Fina says, "But healers generally understand I think"
Paramedic says, "I actually don't mind when people unshare really"
Amarais Fina says, "I don't either"
Amarais Fina says, "but I understand their concern"
Paramedic says, "The only time it bothers me..."
Paramedic says, "is when I travel a long way to help someone and then
they unshare me as soon as I leave"
Paramedic says, 'That's bad because it's hard on me to make all that
effort and then basically get nothing for it."
Amarais Fina says, "Yes. I generally make a point of remembering those
who've helped me, and giving them free shares when I've got them"
Paramedic says, "I do the same."
Amarais Fina says, "Although a healer's share is virtually worthless"
Amarais Fina says, "a lot of exiles don't understand that either"
Amarais Fina says, "especially new exiles"
Amarais Fina says, "they seem to get upset when you don't cross-share"
Paramedic says, "Yes, they don't realize that they won't get much
experience from healers because we don't kill much ."
Paramedic says, "Also, exiles should know that if I come to know them
well and they share me often..."
Paramedic says, "I tend to announce over sunstone when they fall and go
out of my way to help them as soon as possible"
Amarais Fina says, "Yes. I as well. I keep an eye on those fallen"
Paramedic says, "because I know them and know to help them"
Amarais Fina says, "If it looks like they're not getting help I make
sure people know about them"
Paramedic says, "In other words, get to know your healers"
Paramedic says, "and they can better help you"
Paramedic says, "And even if I can't make it, I'll arrange to send a
healer who can"
Amarais Fina says, "Yes. Since I work in the hospital most of the time
I can't always go to a rescue"
Amarais Fina says, "But I can always make sure others know they need
help"
Paramedic says, "Yes, just because I am on hospital duty doesn't mean I
can't help people far away"
Amarais Fina says, "definitely"
Amarais Fina says, "I can't help someone if they don't let me know they
need help"
Amarais Fina says, "but I'm certainly more inclined to go out of my way
for those who I know well"
Paramedic says, "Yes me too."
Paramedic says, "I often arrange for other healers in the field to help
those sharing with me"
Amarais Fina says, "Me too. I have many healer and fighter friends"
Amarais Fina says, "I can get the word out if people need help"
Amarais Fina says, "I'm always happy to help"
Paramedic says, "Me too. Rescues are what I live for, basically."
(Amarais Fina giggles)
Amarais Fina says, "me too"
Amarais Fina says, "I'm not strong enough for a lot of the field
rescues, but I do my part by being available at safe spots for fillups"
Amarais Fina says, "and I try to go and get people in my area if I can"
(Paramedic nods)
Amarais Fina says, "and ss for help for others"
Paramedic says, "These are good tips, I think."
Paramedic asks, "5) What's in the future for Amarais Fina? What trainer
are you training with now?"
Amarais Fina says, "I'm currently training with Eva"
Amarais Fina says, "I train mostly with Eva and Respia, and a little
bit of Horus"
Amarais Fina says, "But I'm actually planning to switch to Loovma for a
bit. My chain broke today :("
Paramedic says, "Argh"
Paramedic says, "I hate when that happens."
Amarais Fina says, "I'm also thinking about getting more pathfinding so
I can help people in the fringe, but I'm not sure if it would be the
best use of my training"
Amarais Fina says, "basically I'm slow and steady"
Amarais Fina says, "I'm not the fastest healer, but I last a while"
Paramedic says, "I have some pathfinding and I have found it useful."
Amarais Fina says, "I have enough pathfinding for the northwest forest"
Amarais Fina says, "it seems that anything else that I could get
pathfinding for costs a lot more training"
Paramedic says, "That's been my general thought as well."
Amarais Fina says, "and I really don't know if I have the patience for
it"
Amarais Fina says, "I do like training with Eva"
Amarais Fina says, "She teaches me so many useful things"
Amarais Fina says, "it's very rewarding"
Paramedic asks, "For a well-rounded approach?"
Paramedic says, "I have done much of my training wih Eva also"
Amarais Fina says, "But I think I might study a bit more with Respia
too. All Eva and no Respia doesn't quite do it for me"
Paramedic says, "Ever consider joining a clan? You've become one of the
more reliable healers around and I'm sure many clans would be
interested."
Amarais Fina says, "I was invited to a clan once"
Paramedic asks, "Oh?"
Amarais Fina says, "But I'm not really cut out for clanhood"
Paramedic asks, "You are not really a clan-sort of fen?"
Amarais Fina says, "I spend all my time in the hospitals"
Amarais Fina says, "I wouldn't really be very involved in the clan
itself"
Paramedic asks, "You like your independence?"
Amarais Fina says, "The only one I'd really want to join is ThoomCare,
and I'm already a consulting physician and affiliated"
Paramedic says, "And we've very proud of that."
Amarais Fina says, "I very much like ThoomCare"
Amarais Fina says, "ThoomCare does great work"
Amarais Fina says, "and I love being a part of that"
Paramedic says, "You're as much a member as any of the Thooms, Amarais,
and we are honored to work with you.."
Paramedic says, "Your work in helping to establish the South Forest
Field Hospital has been instrumental to its success."
Amarais Fina yells, "Thoomeow!"
Paramedic yells, "Thoom!"
Amarais Fina says, "Sometimes I wish I was a thoom"
Amarais Fina says, "but I'd miss my tail"
Paramedic says, "You seem somewhat thoomy."
Paramedic says, "Sometimes I wish I had a tail."
Amarais Fina says, "I'm as thoomy as a fen could be :)"
Paramedic says, "Yes, that's true, you are."
Amarais Fina says, "I like being a fen, but thooms are also very cool"
Paramedic asks, "What do you like about thooms?"
Amarais Fina says, "Hmm...It's kinda hard to say"
Amarais Fina says, "You're just all so thoomy"
Paramedic says, "We're sort of cryptic and fishy, yes."
Amarais Fina says, "It's that quality that's hard to describe"
(Amarais Fina giggles)
Amarais Fina says, "Fens are fish fans too"
Paramedic says, "Can't beat the great taste of fish"
Amarais Fina says, "I can't thoom properly though"
Amarais Fina says, "it sounds funny when I do it"
Paramedic says, "You need a throatsac"
Paramedic says, "Too hard to thoom without one"
Amarais Fina says, "yep"
Paramedic says, "Well, now that we're at the end of the interview, you
are allowed to ask the Thoom one (1) question, Amarais"
(Amarais Fina giggles)
(Amarais Fina thinks about her question)
Amarais Fina asks, "where'd you get the idea to found ThoomCare?"
Paramedic says, "Good question."
Paramedic says, "It started before the Ripture War, and was a less
formal organization then"
Paramedic says, "But after the Ripture War, I reestablished it"
Paramedic says, "and made it a more formal group"
Paramedic says, "and the clan started to take on its present shape"
Paramedic says, "the original idea came from a sense of shared
interests and goals among many members of Puddleby's thoom healer
community."
Amarais Fina says, "So ThoomCare has been around a long time?"
Paramedic says, "oh yes, quite a while"
Paramedic says, "I've been very happy with the clan"
Amarais Fina says, "I think it's great. Of course these days ThoomCare
has many non-thoom associates"
Paramedic says, "Yes, the associates are very important. They are all
among Puddleby's best."
Paramedic says, "And the hospital has brought more attention to our
clan."
Amarais Fina says, "Yes. the hospital was a true stroke of genius"
(Paramedic blushes)
Paramedic says, "Thanks."
Amarais Fina says, "I also think the hospital is a great alternate
training ground for young healers."
Amarais Fina says, "I found it was very educational working there when
I was learning."
Amarais Fina says, "Once I was strong enough to run there and back from
town"
Paramedic says, "I think so too. I like to go there and see several
healers there learning how to use their moonstones"
Amarais Fina says, "Oh, one more thing"
Paramedic asks, "hm?"
Amarais Fina says, "I'd like to thank all the fighters who make a point
of hunting outside the hospitals to help fund the healers studies"
Paramedic says, "Yes me too."
Paramedic says, "That's what made the hospitals really work"
Amarais Fina says, "It really does make the job so much more rewarding"
Paramedic says, "We do appreciate their work"
Paramedic says, "Thoom"
Amarais Fina yells, "Thoomeow!"

GUEST THOOM INTERVIEW:
CRIPPLER INTERVIEWS LUNDAR

Fishwrap is proud to present the following interview by Crippler the
Thoom with Lundar, who has become an expert on Devil's Island.

Crippler says, "Thank you. Paramedic. As many of you may know, Lundar,
a journeyman mystic from clan ELF, has been conducting many exploration
parties at the recently discovered Devil's Island."
Crippler says, "I was able to catch up with Lundar at Chef Haricot's
bakery to bring you this interview."
Crippler asks, "Lundar.. so many exiles find Devil's Island frustrating
and confusing....what draws you there?"
Lundar says, "Hmmm"
Lundar says, "Well, I myself used to think the island was confusing and
frustrating"
(Crippler nods)
Lundar says, "But one day, I started exploring it, and mapping it, and
it started to make sense"
Lundar says, "Right now, what draws me to Devil's Island is my search
for a way into the crater"
Lundar says, "As you may know, within the crater live strange creatures
called Voolcons"
Crippler says, "yes"
Lundar says, "Perhaps we could make them our allies, in light of all
the enemies we are making of late"
Crippler says, "that brings me to my next question"
(Lundar nods.)
Crippler asks, "Concerning The Voolcons..... through your observations,
what have you learned about them?"
Lundar says, "Ummm, they seem to be a mighty thirsty lot =)"
Crippler says, "Yes, they do"
Lundar says, "They constantly walk back and forth between their well,
and their caverns"
Lundar says, "Carrying water"
(Crippler takes note)
Crippler asks, "Are we sure it is water?"
Lundar says, "eh, well it looks like water, anyhow"
Lundar says, "They also seem to be intelligent"
Lundar says, "They speak to each other in a language that sounds like
"clicks" or "chittering""
Crippler says, "We seem to have a lot of water here on this island..."
Crippler asks, "Do you think that we could trade our water for
something they have?"
Lundar says, "Maybe"
Crippler asks, "When we do make contact with the Voolcons, do you think
that they will be hostile towards us exiles?"
Lundar says, "Nai"
Lundar says, "They can see us over their wall, and they do not act
towards us in a hostile manner"
Crippler says, "We must scare them...running around and fighting like
we do"
Lundar says, "perhaps"
Crippler says, "So you believe that they live in this crater"
(Lundar nods.)
Crippler asks, "perhaps they have a entire underground city there?"
Lundar says, "perhaps"
Lundar says, "That would be interesting"
Crippler asks, "How will we ever be able to reach them? What is the
next step?"
Lundar says, "Well, in a few minutes, I will be conducting a full scale
search of Devil's Island"
Lundar says, "Perhaps the full moon will reveal something previously
undiscovered"
Crippler asks, "So any exile who wishes to help is welcome in your
group?"
Lundar says, "Yei"
(Crippler nods)
Crippler says, "Last question..."
Crippler says, "Tell our readers where they can find the maps that you
have made."
Lundar says, "Yi can find it at <http://Lodge29.tripod.com/map.html>"
Lundar says, "It has been updated today with new caves and paths"
Crippler says, "Thank you Lundar, and good luck."
Lundar says, "Tan'ki for the interview, Crippler"
