6) Fewer quests where the same thing happens on a regular schedule like
clockwork. I feel like we need timecards lately
5) Fewer people walking around town wearing cloaks
4) Fewer brambleberries, more of other berries
3) No more areas magically appearing between long-established adjacent

2) Remote settlements with a purpose (with unique vendors and
attractions, and libraries or inns to sleep in)

INTERVIEW WITH TENEBRION

I had the opportunity to chat a
little with our Tenebrion. Most of you know my feelings about him,
but I have to admit that the little I have actually interacted with him
has
begun to sway me. He's been acting quite reasonably and honorably.
While I do recommend a cautious attitude, I wonder whether his is not a
worthy cause. According to this chat, his primary interest is in the
HOW of the pendant... not in WHERE one ends up. You might wonder
whether
this is useful to us. It would be if he would agree to share his
knowledge with us... for it MIGHT be that his understanding is
something that
would open the mirrors. If he understands how the pendant projects,
then we might all benefit. With that, I leave this for you to read.
I've
taken the time to limit it to just our conversation although I affirm
that none of that has been altered.

you... but I'll talk to you if you'd like."
Tenebrion thinks to you, "Malkor stole a sword from me. I want it

You think to Tenebrion, "Well sir, that might be a little difficult to
arrange. Unfortunately he is in my clan too =\"
Tenebrion thinks to you, "He brings great dishonor upon your clan."
You think to Tenebrion, "As to your assertion he "stole" it... do you
present proof sir?"
Tenebrion thinks to you, "He offered a pendant in exchange. He took the
sword and ran before giving me the pendant."
You think to Tenebrion, "I see... do you have witnesses sir? Anyone I
can present in a case to my clan?"
Tenebrion thinks to you, "There was a roomful of witnesses."
You think to Tenebrion, "Excellent, please provide me with a name? I
shall not stand by idly to thieves in my clan..."
Tenebrion thinks to you, "Ugh, Brae, Yor, Tara, and many others."
Tenebrion thinks to you, "I offer a substantial reward for the one who
returns it to me."
You think to Tenebrion, "Very well sir. I shall do what I can ...
although as you might understand it might not be much... My interest is
not in
reward from you but the knowledge that my clan is not involved in
thievery"
You think to Tenebrion, "Incidentally... what do you consider your
"home"? Just the keep proper? Or the entire island?"
Tenebrion thinks to you, "The poppy field and the grounds of my keep."
Tenebrion thinks to you, "I have no interest in the rest of the
island."
You think to Tenebrion, "Thank you sir. Although I question your
motive, let it not be said that I do not understand the honor of your
attempt
at peace."
Tenebrion thinks to you, "I lived here many centuries without your
people. I have little interest in your affairs."
You think to Tenebrion, "of course... but you DO have an interest in
one of our best treasures... and so far I'm unwilling to believe it's
totally
benign. Which is the reason I requested your audience earlier."
Tenebrion thinks to you, "I have no interest in your purgatory. I
merely seek to discover by what means the pendants transport a person."
You think to Tenebrion, "Hmm. That sounds reasonable enough... but what
sir, if you discover that whatever its "means" it simply transports
you to purgatory? "
Tenebrion thinks to you, "I will have to see."
You think to Tenebrion, "You are an old one... and your magic great...
yet even you understand that your last attempt on a pendant shook the
foundations of Purgatory?"
Tenebrion thinks to you, "I am endeavoring to determine the cause of
that. I would prefer it not happen again."
Tenebrion thinks to you, "It disturbed your people a great deal. I do
not want to scare them from trading more pendants."
You think to Tenebrion, "I see sir. That speaks well of your determined
self-interest. Perhaps you can understand then from that viewpoint
why many oppose your interest in our "magic"?"
You think to Tenebrion, "From the viewpoint of determined self-
interest, you pose a threat to one of our sanctuaries. I wonder whether
you'd
be so interested if the tables were turned and our learned people were
interested in something that "might" violate your sanctuary."
Tenebrion thinks to you, "Your people have been violating my sanctuary
from the day they discovered it."
You think to Tenebrion, "Yes, as you see it sir. And I agree. They're
interest is similar to your stated interest. They are curious how your
place
works and what it may have to offer them... But believe me when I say
that I don't think their interest was motivated by a desire to destroy
your sanctuary."

[Here is a long pause that indicated to me the conversation was over.]

You think to Tenebrion, "I thank you sir, for your candor and time. Be
well and I will think on these things we've discussed."

Here is an interview I conducted recently with Mr Pudding, a Thoom
interested in trading for some of Tenebrion's books.

Tyking II asks, "What is your interest with Tenebrion's books?"
Mr Pudding says, "Well I've read through most of our library's ones."
Mr Pudding says, "I need some new ones. And Tenebrion is a new source
of them"
Tyking II says, "I see"
Tyking II asks, "What kinds of books do you think you can obtain from
him?"
Mr Pudding says, "Well he says he has a Necronomicon."
Tyking II asks, "Could you tell us what that is?"
Mr Pudding says, "It's a book of the dead."
Mr Pudding says, "It's a good read I hear."
Mr Pudding says, "He wants a purg pendant though"
(Tyking II nods)
Mr Pudding says, "and I'll never get one :-P"
Mr Pudding says, "I'll have to find something else to trade"
Tyking II asks, "He will exchange books for a purgatory pendant?"
(Mr Pudding): Mr Pudding nods
Tyking II says, "Okay"
Mr Pudding says, "But I wouldn't trade that :-P"

books?"
Mr Pudding says, "I'm not sure. I want to learn wizardry."

Tyking II asks, "If you had a purgatory pendant, and Tenebrion offered
you a soul sword for it, would you accept and why?"

Mr Pudding ponders, "I mean. Look what happend to you! :-P"
(Mr Pudding): Mr Pudding grins to himself

BONES' COOKIN' CORNER

Welcome to Bones' Cookin Corner, where I will feature the higlights of
Thoom cuisine.

This week: Bent Tree Fish Stew!

This is a good fish stew meal my mother used to make back home in Bent
Tree.

Ingredients

* two porgies (or scrup, tilapia), one to two pounds each
* flour
* salt, black pepper, to taste
* one quarter cup kudzu oil or fish oil
* two uli roots, finely chopped
* two tomatoes, chopped
* one cup fish stock
* red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper (optional)

What you do

* Cut the fish crosswise, into two-inch sections. Mix the flour,
salt, and pepper in a bowl. Roll the fish in the flour mixture.
* Heat the oil in a skillet. Cook the fish in the oil, turning it
until it is golden brown all over. Remove the fish and set aside.
* Fry the uli root in the skillet for a few minutes. Add the
tomatoes. Stir and cook for about ten minutes. Add the fish stock.
Reduce heat, cover and simmer for ten minutes more.
* Return the fish to the skillet. Add red pepper if desired. Simmer
for twenty to thirty minutes. Serve with rice.

Virgil says, "It's not something I've ever even considered."
Zippy says, "I figured as much.."
Virgil says, "The word "unthinkable" barely does it justice."
(Zippy nods)
Virgil says, "Evidently we'll have to try."
Virgil ponders, "But where do we even begin?"
Axell asks, "can you look at the pendant ?"
Virgil peers at it in perplexity
Axell exclaims, "take it !"
(Axell gives the broken pendant to Virgil)
Virgil takes it gingerly.
(Axell smiles)
Zippy says, "hopefully you will be able to come to some sort of
conclusion"
Virgil turns it around and around in his hands.
Virgil says, "Ouch, that edge is sharp"
Zippy asks, "What do you make of it?"
Zippy says, "I guess it would be hard to say.."
Zippy says, "Seeing as how it seems as though you have never seen one
broken.."
Virgil says, "It's a bit embarrassing not to know the answers"
Axell asks, "its the 1st broken pendant you have seen ?"
Virgil nods to Axell
Virgil says, "Yes; this is quite unprecedented"
Virgil compares the broken pendant and his normal one.
Virgil ponders, "Hmm"
Virgil says, "the frame appears the same..."
Zippy asks, "Have you ever heard about anything like this happening
before?"
Zippy says, "There are a lot of books back there.. just curious if
something was documented.."
Virgil says, "No, Zippy. I mean, I've heard complaints about this
Tenebrion, but..."
Virgil says, "But we've always thought that the pendants were just a
sort of physical metaphor"
Zippy ponders, "Hmm"
Axell ponders, "hmm ?"
Virgil says, "A symbol made real, if you will"
Zippy says, "I certainly hope you can learn something by this then"
Virgil asks, "And how do you break a metaphor?"
Virgil says, "So to see one like this"
Callia is no longer Clanning.
Virgil says, "So plainly changed..."
Virgil shudders.
Virgil says, "It's like saying "the air is broken""
Zippy says, "Yeah I get what you mean"
Zippy says, "It still seems impossible"
Virgil says, "Exactly"
Axell says, "so ? but it is"
Zippy says, "and on top of that 5 have been broken in a short period"
Zippy says, "it went from seeming impossible to being very very real"
Virgil turns it over in his hands.
/3/01 Virgil asks, "Are they all like this? The broken ones?"
Axell says, "yes"
Axell says, "I have seen 2 of them"
Virgil scowls.
Virgil says, "Whatever he's doing to them, then..."
Virgil says, "it causes the identical damage"
Zippy says, "So he is trying the same thing over and over..."
(Axell nods)
Virgil says, "Silly way to "travel the planes", if you ask me."
Zippy says, "and since he is obviously failing we can plan on seeing
more broken pendants..."
Virgil asks, "Gosh. Do you think we should ration them?"
Zippy asks, "Do you see any more possible negative effect other than
the pendants being useless?"
Virgil says, "It depends on him, I think"
Virgil says, "if he manages to keep experimenting thus, and finds a
way to twist them"
Zippy asks, "Are you suggesting something?"
Virgil says, "well, I just don't know what might happen."
Virgil says, "Not yet. It's still too abrupt; I'm trying to absorb
it."
Virgil says, "I don't know that it's such a good idea for him to keep
meddling though"
Zippy asks, "were you actually serious about a pendant ration?"
Virgil says, "If the exiles are so anxious to trade, I don't see any
other way to limit the harm..."
Virgil asks, "Or... Well, we could raise the price?"
Zippy says, "That wouldn't really help those new 4th circlers.."
Virgil asks, "Would Tenebrion stoop to subsidizing his suppliers?"
Axell says, "hmm"
Zippy says, "It is hard to say what Tenebrion would do"
Virgil says, "And that's a point"
Zippy says, "Maybe just get Beatrice to start keeping careful
records.."
Axell asks, "only one pendant to healer ?"
Zippy says, "1 pendant a piece even if they don't have it with them or
they sold it.."
Virgil nods slowly
Zippy says, "That would require some extra careful record keeping on
Beatrice's part"
Virgil whispers, "I'm not sure she'd even be willing"
Virgil says, "But I'll take it up with her."
(Axell nods)
Virgil says, "In the meantime"
Zippy says, "Maybe Serquoit would help her"
Zippy asks, "I suppose you need some quiet time to work on that
pendant eh?"
Virgil says, "please, please be careful. We cannot tell what might
happen if this continues"
(Zippy nods)
(Axell nods)
Zippy says, "and good luck to you figuring it out"
Axell says, "keep it please"
Virgil smiles wanly.
Zippy says, "the broken one that is"
Zippy says, "Have fun with it"
(Zippy grins)
Virgil says, "yes, thank you. This needs very detailed study"
Zippy says, "Thanks for taking time out to help us"
Axell says, "thank you"
Virgil says, "Thank you for bringing this to my attention"
(Axell bows)
Zippy says, "We know you are busy training a bunch of people so we
really appreciate it"
Zippy ponders, "I guess it would be a good time to leave him to his
work"
Axell says, "we will come back in a few days..."
Virgil studies the pendant intently.
Zippy says, "Yes we look forward to hearing from you"
Virgil says, "Splendid. Perhaps I'll know more by then."
(Zippy nods)
(Axell nods)
Axell says, "bye :)"

CHARLOS' CORNER

I have recently been troubled by the involvement of
one of my clan sistahs, J'nder, in the Nox Sorora.
There were times when Lilit was very active in the
East Field, and I have been in a few battles there,
with her and others in league with her. I have long
wondered about the relationship between Lilit and the
religion called Nox Sorora.

Charlos asks, "Dorf on the street for Fishwrap
Magazine, care to answer a couple questions?"
Magnels says, "Sure thing. Shoot."
Charlos asks, "What's your opinion of the Nox Sorora?"
Magnels says, "I don't know too much 'bout them I
guess..."
Magnels says, "Lorian, a late clanmate of mine was in
it..."
Charlos asks, "Yes?"
Magnels says, "But from what I could gather..."
Magnels says, "Each member acts very differently."
Charlos says, "Ah"
Magnels says, "So I'm not really sure what to think of
the whole organization."
Charlos says, "I see"
(Magnels nods.)
Charlos says, "Never really seen many of em hangin out
together..."
Magnels says, "Yeah, true..."
Charlos asks, "Have you ever seen any of them in
action?"
Magnels asks, "How many members are in the lands these
days?"
Magnels says, "Oh... I've seen lilit..."
Charlos asks, "Performing rites.. etc..?"
(Magnels frowns.)
Charlos asks, "Oh?"
Magnels says, "Can't say as I agree with what she's
doing."
Charlos says, "Hmm"
Magnels ponders, "whatever it is."
Magnels says, "Can't say as I understand it
completely..."
Charlos says, "Ah"
Magnels says, "But I don't trust anything with
undine."
Magnels says, "I've met Indigo too though."
Charlos asks, "Oh?"
Magnels says, "She seems nice... and seems to have
used her powers to help others at times."
Charlos asks, "Really?"
Magnels says, "So you can see why it's tough to get a
comprehensive picture of the organization ;)"
Magnels says, "Yeah... I seem to remember a time
awhile back..."
Magnels says, "She was helping to recover some lost
memories of another exile or something..."
Charlos says, "Hmm"
Magnels says, "Don't remember exactly, but it was
helping."
Charlos says, "Well, thanks a lot for your time
Magnels"
Magnels says, "Sure thing ;)"

Charlos asks, "What's your opinion of the Nox Sorora?"
Elenis Reyav says, "They haven't done anything bad
yet, so they're fine."
Elenis Reyav says, "I say that for all exiles *grin*"
Charlos asks, "Meaning you think they might do
something bad?"
Charlos says, "ah"

Charlos asks, "Have you ever seen any of it's members
hanging out together?"
(Elenis Reyav nods.)

Elenis Reyav says, "Err... not more than two..."

Charlos asks, "What were they doing?"
Elenis Reyav says, "Chatting about Nox stuff..."
Elenis Reyav says, "Their relations to each other..."
Elenis Reyav says, "The opinions of Puddleby mostly."
Charlos says, "I have heard exiles say..."
Charlos says, "that there has been some harm done by
members of the Nox Sorora..."
Charlos says, "Summonings and such..."
Elenis Reyav says, "Hmm..."
Elenis Reyav says, "I've only seen Lilit doing
that..."
Charlos says, "Invasions led by Lilit"
Charlos says, "Ah"
Elenis Reyav says, "Since it hasn't been more than one
exile... I can't say it was a Nox thing..."
Elenis Reyav says, "Just a Lilit thing."
Charlos asks, "So you see Lilit and the Nox Sorora as
two totally seperate things?"
Charlos says, "Nothing to do with each other..."
Elenis Reyav says, "Well... not totally separate of
course."
Elenis Reyav says, "One is a member of the other."
Elenis Reyav says, "And a high-ranking member too."
Charlos says, "I see"
Elenis Reyav says, "But each person is entitled to
their own actions as well..."
Charlos says, "And Lilit's actions have no relevance
to the Nox Sorora"
Elenis Reyav says, "Some do... some don't..."
Charlos says, "I see"
Elenis Reyav says, "I honestly haven't seen very many
that do though."

Gurgi says, "My first duty is to the Goddess and my
second to the particular priestess that I help to do
her work"

Gurgi says, "Lilit is my priestess"
Gurgi says, "Though I help any of the priestesses and
other Gens that need help"
Charlos asks, "So a Gens is a...?"
Charlos says, "Forgive my ignorance"
Gurgi says, "A Gens is a follower of the Goddess that
is not a Priestess"
Charlos says, "Ah"
Gurgi says, "Being male it is impossible for me to be
a priestess"
Gurgi says, "though females may be Gens"
Charlos says, "Ah"
Charlos asks, "Are you able to discuss any particular
activities?"
Gurgi says, "i can discuss most things if you ask me"
Gurgi asks, "Is there something in particular you were
interested in?"
Charlos says, "Well, I suppose I am most interested in
Lilit"
Charlos says, "and your duty to her..."
Charlos says, "I have heard it said that you are her
"bodyguard""
Gurgi says, "Since I am her Gens Dea it is my duty to
help her succeed in her tasks"
Charlos says, "Ah"
Gurgi says, "Obviously she cannot do much if she is
dead"
Charlos says, "True..."
Gurgi says, "And my skills mostly include those of
battle"
Gurgi says, "So I can serve her as body guard"
Charlos says, "Ah"
Gurgi says, "protecting her from physical attacks"
Charlos says, "The undine don't always cooperate with
her rites.."
Gurgi says, "though tobe honest the physical attacks
tend to be more rare and less dangerous than other
forms"
Charlos says, "I see"
Charlos asks, "What is the relationship between Lilit
and the Nox Sorora?"
Gurgi says, "Lilit is a Priestess of the Nox Sorora"
Gurgi says, "So she is a member of the Nox Sorora"
Charlos asks, "Is there any hierarchy within?"
Charlos asks, "Does she have a higher standing amongst
priestesses?"
1Gurgi says, "Matre Namaah is the head priestess"
Gurgi says, "All other priestesses are equal"
Charlos says, "Ah"
Charlos says, "I have heard some say.."
Charlos says, "that Lilit's beliefs and those of the
Nox differ greatly"
Gurgi says, "Well everyone has different beliefs about
different things"
Charlos says, "Ah"
Charlos says, "So there is a lot of room for
interpretation..."
Gurgi says, "For example some may believe you are
wearing a yellow shirt"
Charlos says, "Ah"
Gurgi says, "and others may think it is muddy yellow
or gold"
Charlos says, "I see"
Gurgi says, "The Nox Sorora all share a core beleif"
Charlos says, "The worship of the Night"
Gurgi says, "We are all working together to do the
Goddesses will"
Charlos says, "I see"
Gurgi says, "And to be her weapons in the on going
battle against the forces of Leviathon"
Charlos says, "Leviathon..."
Gurgi says, "In a way we are all each other's body
gaurds"
Charlos ponders, "rings a bell..."
Gurgi says, "For each has their own strength"

Gurgi asks, "Have you read the passages on Lilit's
scrolls?"
Charlos says, "Yes, I have perused them briefly"
Gurgi says, "Leviathon is Night's first child who
turned on her for his own glory"
Gurgi says, "Essentially the ultimate goal of the Nox
Sorora is to purg the earth of Leviathon's influence"
Charlos asks, "Is he involved in the enslavement of
the Undine by the Darshak?"
Gurgi says, "Possibly"
Charlos says, "I see"
Gurgi says, "Leviathon has many servants"
Charlos says, "Well, I suppose if any of the readers
have more questions they should look at Lilit's
scrolls.."
Charlos asks, "Where are they by the way?"

Gurgi says, "Much of the information is on Lilit in
particular too"
Charlos says, "Ah"
Gurgi says, "She has a special gift that she uses to
battle the Darshak menace"
Gurgi says, "Other priestesses have other gifts"
Charlos asks, "Gift hmm?"
Gurgi says, "Some people see only Lilit's work and
assume we are undine worshippers"
Charlos says, "Ah"
Gurgi says, "But Lilit's work is more an exception
than a rule"
Gurgi says, "Most of Nox Sorora's activites are much
less direct and obvious"
Charlos says, "She is a member in the Nox Sorora..."
Charlos says, "but her work with the undine in no way
reflects the sentiments of all of it's members"
Gurgi says, "It is not that they dont support her"
Charlos says, "Ah"
Gurgi says, "It is just that they do not all feel the
same way abou the undine as she does"

Gurgi says, "Though we all recognize that her work is
very important"
