I am organizing a 1 to 2KB text adventure competition. See below:
http://panks.freeshell.org/advcomp.html
"Is it possible to write a text adventure in under 2K of RAM? Some
people have tried, and some have succeeded.
I would like to officially announce the formation of The 1st Annual 1
to 2K Classic Text Adventure Competition. I will be accepting BASIC,
C/C++, Fortran and Assembly language submissions for 1 to 2K text
adventures written for the following computing platforms: Commodore
64/128/+4/Vic-20/PET, TI 99/4A, IBM PC/PCJr, Atari 400/800, Apple
II/IIe, Sinclair, TRS-80, Color Computer, Acorn, Tomy Tutor, Bally
Astrocade, Linux, Mac and Windows/DOS.
Please submit your 1 to 2K adventure games to me. The 2K size can be
either the source coce, or the EXE, BIN, OBJ, PRG, ELF or other
self-contained, self-running binary. So you can thus have, say, a 8K
source code listing, so long as the binary format doesn't exceed 2.9KB
of size. You may also crunch the binary down with a compressing
program such as UPX or Winzip. The competition officially begins on
June 28, 2004, and runs through September 29, 2004. I will post all
submissions, regardless of when they were submitted, and then review
them and post grades on this page on October 7th. Good luck! =)
To help get you started, see my 8KB adventure game, in BASIC, called

Songbird Lassos Loopz for Lynx
June 29, 2004
For immediate release:
ROCHESTER, MN -- After years of being in a holding pattern, Loopz is finally
making a landing on the Atari Lynx. Songbird Productions recently scooped up
the rights to this game after several years of negotiations with Audiogenic
Software Ltd. and Hand Made Software.
Loopz is the captivating puzzle game which has been published in at least a
dozen different formats. The premise is simple: get pieces, drop them on the
screen, and form closed "loopz" to clear the screen. The bigger the loopz, the
bigger the points. The three game variations included are Chain Loopz, Target
Loopz, and Match Loopz, each with their own twist on the basic game. Players
can also watch for "gophers" which appear occasionally to help clear incomplete
loopz from the screen.
Peter Calver, Managing Director of Audiogenic, was happy to work with Songbird
on licensing this release: "I'm thrilled that at last Lynx owners will finally
be able to play this highly addictive game!". Songbird founder Carl Forhan was
equally pleased, saying, "This is a game many fans have heard about and maybe
even played a few times over the years. I'm glad Songbird can finally give this
game the proper publication it deserves."
Songbird expects to have the game ready for release at Classic Gaming Expo in
San Jose this August. For details about CGE, please visit http://cgexpo.com .

Interactive Gaming Museum Rocks Kentia Hall, Wins Awards
VALLEY STREAM, NEW YORK – June 14, 2004 – The annual Electronic Entertainment Expo is the ultimate showcase for all that is new in the world of interactive entertainment. In 2004, as E3 celebrated its 10th event, it also became a place where the now multi-billion-dollar interactive entertainment industry could take a long, hard look at its roots. The organizers of Classic Gaming Expo, along with sponsor Intellivision Productions, brought the Interactive Gaming Museum to the Los Angeles Convention Center’s Kentia Hall with 18 playable, historically-significant game consoles, 30 arcade games from the heyday of coin-ops set for free-play, and a museum display containing an impressive array of ultra-rare gaming items. The exhibit quickly became the buzz of the show and was one of the must-see booths over the three-day event.
While the CGExpoInteractiveGamingMuseum was appreciated by the multitude of show-goers who wanted to catch a few plays of their favorite classic game, it also caught the eye of a few show critics. The InteractiveMuseum won several awards including being named among PC World’s “Best Of Show”, 2nd place in G4 TV’s “Top Ten Achievements in Booth Design”, and the tongue-in-cheek “Worst Graphics” award from GameSpy.
“We were thrilled to receive the ‘Worst Graphics’ award,” said Joe Santulli, co-organizer of Classic Gaming Expo.“GameSpy recognized the fact that the games we were showing did have the worst graphics … and some of the best gameplay at E3 2004.These games were all about the player experience. The gaming technology of the time would not support stunning graphics, rich audio and an involved story.Designers had to make a superior playing game if they had any hope of it being a hit.”
The CGExpoInteractiveGamingMuseum at E3 2004 is part of Classic Gaming Expo’s continuing effort to preserve, archive and share the rich history of the interactive entertainment industry. The Interactive Gaming Museum was conceived as a way to give the 65,000 E3 2004 attendees a glimpse into the annual Classic Gaming Expo show held in August, where a much larger exhibit of playable game systems and arcade games, game artifacts and game-industry alumni speaking on the early days of the industry will be on hand to celebrate the history of interactive entertainment. The show also includes many vendors selling both classic and newer game merchandise. Unlike E3’s all-industry format, Classic Gaming Expo welcomes all game fans.
“What we brought to E3 for the InteractiveGamingMuseum was only a fraction of the gaming artifacts that will be at Classic Gaming Expo 2004, August 21 and 22 at the San JoseConvention Center,” said Santulli.“There we’ll have all the room we need to allow our attendees to experience the depth and breadth of video gaming’s history.”
Information on attendance, ticketing, past Classic Gaming Expo events and links to awards won and stories written about CGExpo’s InteractiveGamingMuseum at E3 2004 are available at www.cgexpo.com.

Atari Video Club announces Spy Games tournament for VGS'04
For Immediate Release:
March 9, 2004
Atari Video Club/Jaguar Comunnity United is pleased to announce the following
details for Spy Games tourney. For those who don't know what Spy Games is
here's the basics:
The tourney style will be known as Spy Games in which eight players will be
chosen to compete in games in order to add prizes to final prize package and
one of the eight players will be known as the Spy, a player who was chosen to
make sure the prizes don’t get added. (If this sounds familiar to you it should
because I got the idea after watching “Celebrity Mole” on ABC-TV (I also
thought about doing something like this last year, but never went through with
it)) Also like the TV show, after each game a quiz will be taken about each
player to figure out who is the Spy, the player who scored low on the
quiz will be eliminated. Now here’s the twist, there will be no exemptions, so
everybody is a risk, plus at the end of tourney The Spy will get a chance to
win the prize package when the Spy will play against the player who figured out
who is the Spy. Also visitors to the show will be able to guess who is the Spy
(hint’s will be hidden the program, plus they will be able to watch the
players as well).
Now For the details on how to enter a chance to take part in Spy Games:
You entry is based on your high score of one of the games listed below.
2600: Star Wars: Death Star Battle
5200: Defender
7800:Xevious
Lynx:Remmant
Jaguar: Protector(it can be Regular or Special Edition version)
(You must be able to attend the The 2004 Video Game Summit to enter)
submit you scores as often as you like(the higher the score the
better your chances)
you must play the game you have chosen(you Can Not change the game)
Submit you scores by e-mailing me using the subject "Spy Games" or
online at the Atari Bowl page(formerly the Atari Mania page) at
AVC online(a button to the Atari Bowl page is at the VGS registration
on the information form) Your score will be listed on the Atari bowl stnadings
(but it will not effect Atari bowl ratings)
the top eight scores will be notified when contest is over,
June 30th,2004 is the final day of entry.
Good luck to all who enter

Seattle-Based Classic Video Gaming Show Announces Event Dates and
Location
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - February 16, 2004 - Northwest Classic Gaming
Enthusiasts (NWCGE) is pleased to announce their annual show, NWCGE 2K4,
will be held Saturday, May 8, 2004 in Seattle, Washington. Come see the
beginnings of the video game industry and how it has evolved from the
early days of Pong and Atari to today's offerings from Nintendo, Sony,
and Microsoft. In its seventh year, the Northwest Classic Gaming
Enthusiasts Expo is a show dedicated to bringing together video game
fans of all ages to play classic and modern games, meet historical
leaders of the video game industry, and see the latest offerings from
various exhibitors and vendors. Organized by gamers for gamers, NWCGE
2K4 should be on every video game fan's calendar.
The highlight of past NWCGE expos has been the Annual Northwest Atari
Championships, and this year will be no different. More than a simple
high-score contest, the Northwest Atari 2600 Championship has become an
annual tradition among local gaming enthusiasts, covering varied skills
from joysticks to paddles, high-score contests to direct head-to-head
combat, all through several rounds of play. Prizes are given away
throughout the competition and the winner will be declared the Atari
World Champion. As if that wasn't enough, additional contests and prizes
are slated to be conducted throughout the event on various classic
systems. Everyone has a chance to win.
The Seattle area is home to many leaders of the video game industry,
both past and present. Several of these celebrities have already agreed
to appear at the show and share their views regarding their
contributions to the video game industry. The show is a wonderful
opportunity to rub shoulders with the very people that have shaped how
we view and play video games today.
The show is also an excellent opportunity to purchase hard-to-find games
from reputable dealers and trade and sell games with fellow gaming
enthusiasts. In addition, several new games for classic systems will be
released at the show. Rarities and never-before-seen games have
surfaced at the show in the past.
The show has traditionally been held in small venues with limited
sponsorship. This year the organizers have decided to host a much
larger event backed by well-known leaders of classic gaming including
AtariAge, Digital Press, Packrat Video Games, the Atari History Museum,
and many more. This year's event will be held at the Seatac
International Airport Holiday Inn, a modern hotel with many amenities
for attendees and those that wish to stay overnight.
There's no other show like NWCGE 2K4 in the Northwest, and it's sure to
be a must-attend event for gamers of all ages. For more information,
please visit the NWCGE website at:
http://nwcge.org

THE ATARI TIMES ANNOUNCES THE 2004 COMPENDIUM
January 1, 2004
For immediate release:
WINTER HAVEN, FL - The editor of The Atari Times (www.ataritimes.com)
has announced the upcoming January 31, 2004 release of the annual
paper-based book titled the 2004 Compendium. A limited-run of copies
will be printed to accommodate the demand.
The book will include at least 100 page issue of news, features,
reviews, and previews for all Atari home systems that have appeared on
the website over the past year. These include articles for the Jaguar,
Lynx, 7800, 5200, 2600, home computers, and even the arcade systems.
In addition, the 2004 Compendium will include a minimum of 15 pages of
previously unreleased material as well as a color cover.
Gregory D. George, editor and writer for The Atari Times commented,
"The 2001 and 2002 Year End Issues were wildly successful, and I was
very pleased at the response I received from the readers." On the name
change, George said, "I decided to change the title to more accurately
describe the book and the time when it was released. It seemed funny
to be selling a 2002 Issue all through 2003! Also, this slightly
reduces the workload of postal workers who are already burdened by the
extra load of Christmas deliveries."
The pre-order pricing of the 2004 Compendium is $11.00 plus $4 for
continental U.S. shipping (outside the continental U.S. shipping is
$8.) After January 31, 2004, the price will be $14.00 plus $4
continental U.S. shipping (outside the continental U.S. shipping is $8.)
Continued Mr. George, "As with last year's book, the 2004 Compendium
is seeking sponsors and advertisers to help reduce overall costs. Full
page ads are $30 (includes a free copy), half page ads are $15 (buy a
copy for $10) and quarter page ads are $10. The only requirement is
that the ad be something Atari related. To buy an ad, please contact
