The tip seems very soft, pliable. You can wiggle it w/ your thumb.
I found Ninetendo-manufactured pen-like styluses at Wally-mart. The price for 2 was less than 2 styluses and included 2 screen protectors to boot. Kids love them, tho they don't fit into the stylus slot on the game.
Very true. The best option would probably be to show your kids how to use the styluses properly. How old are they, by the way?

I've had a DS since it came out and I also have a Lite. I've never had an issue with the styluses. I would say that your kids may already be doing damage to the screen if they're pushing that hard.
