ok - enough is enough i think. i'm sure i can hack some perl/cgi to do whatever we need - the only problem being... that i'm not sure *exactly* what his site did. i write perl/cgi for a living - so it'll be a bit like a busmans holiday but hell!

i know that the site alllows:

* uploading of vmu files (??)
* transloading to other sites (ftping once they're uploaded!?)
* compressing of bookmark files??

help me and i'll write something tonight! i'll host the script on my server under the domain name www.cosmicconsoles.com which isn't doing anything at the moment.

if anyone needs a host for dc related cgi/etc - i can give people accounts on my box.

cheers,

pete

sitting comfortably?

then, off we go...

well, that would be great, but, it just may take som
e specialized knowledge (like about vmu files, dk/dp
bookmark files, etc.)... though, maybe not much...
not sure how complex it is...

now, my first instinct is to say that, if you really
want to persue this, go talk to kefka... he runs d
reamserv and already has impressive credits under hi
s belt with stuff like this... world's first open-s
ource vmu file uploader, world's first vmu file uplo
ader that accepts uploads from any dc browser...

and, of course, if we could find loren peace, this w
ould probably be child's play to him... he of booya
ka.com and the pso snapshot transfer site fame... g
uy really knows his vmu files...

soooo, kefka is the genius on this...
http://kefka.hypermart.net/home.php

and, he has even wanted this for awhile...
one of the holy grails around here...

aaaand, he might even be reading this now...

ok, now on to a more direct reply...

and i have no idea how much you know about dreamcast
browsers...

> i know that the site alllows:
>
> * uploading of vmu files (??)

sort of...
it is not an archive of saves is the shortest answer
...

> * transloading to other sites (ftping once they're
uploaded!?)

right... this is the gold...
upload to his site, only exists on the server a shor
t time, gives you the url, then you have a few nice
options...
you can click a button to ftp it via transloader.com
or domania.net...
if it is an image file, you can go to myimager.com o
r gifworks.com and the pic will be there for you to
alter...

and this is only the short story...

ok, also big difference here...
his site is 100% unusable for game saves... (it cre
ates no vmi file, if you happen to know what that me
ans...)
we use it to grab a pic, sound file, etc. from the w
eb and put it in our webspace...

extreeeeemely useful AND more importantly, the only
easy way to do it...

> * compressing of bookmark files??

ok, picture some weird, demented, twisted alternate
universe where instead of a file with all your bookm
arks in it... you have ONE file for EACH bookmark..
. then you have this 200 block vmu on which to stor
e them and each bookmark is 2 blocks each...

this is the universe the people who made the browser
live in, aparently...

so, what this great site does is allow you to upload
these numerous bookmark files and it extracts the i
nfo and creates one VERY small file with all the boo
kmarks in it... in fact, it is a mini-html page wit
h a collection of links, stored to the vmu...

um, it gets a little confusing from here...

when you download this file it is the same file form
at (in name at least) as all the regular bookmark fi
les...
dp bookmark file are named starting with PASSPORT.S0
0, then .S01, etc... well, this thing allows you to
select the name you want (eg. the numbers after the
.S) and even label it...

a "hyper bookmark"...
or "bookmark folder"...

(back when we found it long long ago, it got handled
by the word "bookmark compressor" and the name kind
of stuck...)

ok, now, when your bookmarks auto-load when you firs
t boot the browser, this new file loads with them, b
ecause the browser thinks it is a regular bookmark f
ile...
one of your bookmarks appears with a -> or whatever
it uses, i forget, as an identifier, with the descri
ption/name you selected next to it...

you click that bookmark, it loads this page from the
vmu...

soooo, if you are still with me...

the file is seemingly BOTH an html page AND a bookma
rk file... the url you see in bookmarks is the brow
ser code to load the file itself...

very weird...

see, it all makes alot more sense if you use the bro
wser and i do not know if you have...

ok, so, we DO know how to make vmu-based html files.
.. and now these .H files, which seem to be the bro
wser's name for specially made html files, loadable
from vmu, but, this is a WHOLE other subject... and
we could rename a vmu-based html file to a .S file
so the browser thinks it is a bookmark...

but, it does not do anything like his, where it has
the correct title and url to load itself as an html
file...

on top of that, he has some kick ass features he add
ed recently which give you alot of editin g control
of the url and title of each bookmark before you fin
alize the new file and save it..

at this point, i am mainly being this thorough just
bcause i am planning on adding this post as a link s
omewhere in the bookmarks for future interested mind
s...

bear in mind, there is even quite a bit more to it t
han this...
what i COULD do is go upload a file, and send you li
nks to the dynamic pages that come up as a result as
i do various things, so, you can see examples of wh
at i mean... only problem is, i am about to sign of
f here in not too long and may not be on again until
, ummm, whoo boy, could be few days, could be later
tonight...

buuuut, if you have a dp or even a dreakey (and i'll
bet you do), you can definitely make it all happen
yourself...

oh, but, goddammit, i just remembered...
his site is down... no examples to be seen until it
comes back up...

> help me and i'll write something tonight!

heh heh...

> i'll host the script on my
> server under the domain name www.cosmicconsoles.co
m which isn't doing
> anything at the moment.

well, that would certainly rock...

btw, some previews are available...

the vgso has the open source vmu uploader in the fil
es section...
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VGSOnline/files

and, at the dcbg files group, we have been posting a
ll sorts of file for quite some time...
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DCBG-Files

however, obviously people can email you files of var
ying kinds...
if nothing else, just post what you need and someone
will undoubtedly do it...

seems an awful lot of work from my untrained eye's p
erspective...

unfortunately, it is not that easy...
we would need his actual cgi scripts that do the rea
l work and a server to run them on...
no one has ever figured out how he does what he does
, so, without his site, we do not have it at all...

He's GOT to know how much this thing gets
used.....remember when I "rediscovered" it?
(and the mirror site).......

It was on one of the busiests DC gaming
sites in Japan.....so we are not the only
ones using it.

Maybe it's a bandwidth issue, I mean
the fact that HIS Dreamcast broke
should have no bearing on keeping the
site going.....
