Yeah, VMUs are getting pretty cheap. I should pick up some more, so I can
have a whole chorus of no-battery-beeping whenever my Dreamcast turns on! :)

I wonder if I'm brave enough to buy you a VMU... they sell for like $10 here...
maybe less, and they are the official sega ones.

I'll answer both questions at once here.. cin / cout are the text input /
output for C++, and I also love those infocom games, I'll look into how hard
a z-code interpreter would be to port once I have keyboard input working
correctly. It would be great to play Adventure or Hitchhiker's guide to the
galaxy on the DC! Sadly saving your game wouldn't be possible for a while,
as I'm not brave enough to start messing with (and corrupting) my VMUs just
yet :)

oh... i guess i hadn't noticed...
i put 'dreamzzt' into google and landed on your site
... looks like you have great stuff going on... do
n't know how i missed the connection all this time..
.

ok, well that means you get subjected to the same qu
estion i throw anyone i think might know since i am
no expert on all this...
old text adventure?
child of the 70s/80s and all that, i grew up on scot
t adams and infocom, anything been done? anything s
topping it from being done?
http://ifiction.org has an amazing selection and i s
ee them for download in many formats all over the we
b, so i am guessing there are no huge legal entangle
ments... i haven't gotten around to it, but, i know
i can get them all for my psion...
i was thinking linux probably opened up quite a few
possibilities and saving to the vmu doesn't seem to
be all that tough, i notice the pboom port does it,
though i heard the saving is not perfect...

anyway, i was once told that there was somethg avail
able or little that had to be done to make it availa
ble, but, i have since lost contact with the person
who knew...

Sounds cool... let me know so I can submit the news to cvision/dcemu lol. :)

What exactly is cin and cout? I don't know if it's a programming thing because
I'm dumb in that area (for now).

Yep, right now I'm working on a 3d engine, but that's just really to show
off.. I can't really imagine it being used for something like Quake. I've
also been working on providing cin and cout text stuff for the Dreamcast so
that people can do simple stuff to show off.. even if it's just putting
"Hello world!" on the screen. Hopefully once I finish the keyboard stuff
I'll get someting released.

heh, sorry I have a head cold ;)

so that's cool you have experience with dc programming... I wanted to make a

and since I'm using mIRC so much I figured might as well go with what I know

I was just playing this game called Drug Lord 2 for pc today, and got to
thinking... I love this game lol. I don't know how to program, I do know how to
script mIRC though, and am going to try to "port" it to mIRC, or actually making
a clone of it, with different options etc. Now, this afaik will be hard because
there are things I have to do, that I haven't done yet, but I see it entirely
possible.

Anyways, to get to my point, I wanted to know how hard it would be to script a
high-score board for this... not necesarily a board, but I'm sure it would
consist of a database, a script to recieve the sent data, and a script to
redirect the person to a page showing the top 50 scores, and where (if at all)
they rank. So my question is... how hard would it be? and would you want to do
it? I don't know how I could repay you... but uh, I'm good at burning stuff to
cd-r's ;) anyways, let me know what you think, and if you want a link to this
game (yes I'm addicted), let me know.

BTW: my high score is like 3,500,000,000 - and I've been playing for oh, 3 days
now? :P

Actually, it's dc-load-ip, not KOS that has LAN support. Dan's working on
getting the networking stuff going now, as well as an improved 3d API, but I
assume that since you mentioned KOS you're probably on the dcdev mailing
list, too, and already know that :)

It's not 'good' for making Dreamcast software yet... there's a version of
kalistios that had lan support added, but afaik, it's limited yet... still,
cheaper than the (some places) $130+ BBA for devving. And yes be weary, it will
not work with any dc software except the DP2 included with it, and the new
kalistios with support added.

this will come in handy, esp if it can shorten

Keep in mind that the LAN adapter and the Broadband Adapter are two
completly different units, and only the Broadband Adapter works with
official Sega games. The LAN adapter is only good for using the version of
Passport included with it, and for developing Dreamcast software.

Ok, a few more questions-

1. I've looked around at some imacs
   and I'm impressed. However, all
the apples I've seen have a
   processor speed in the 5-700mhz
range. Will these be a problem?

According to PC magazine, Macs are faster than PCs with twice the clockspeed. My old iMAC IS 233MHz. and it's faster than my girlfriend's 477MHz. Compaq.

2. Since it requires different software
than a pc, will I be able to take
advantage of all the free (for
   backups only, of course) software
   at places like Morpheus?

The iMac version of Morpheus is called Lime Wire. I recently downloaded Windows 98 to use with VirtualPC, which is a PC emulator which runs on a Mac. However, you're right: there are MANY more PC programs out there. I feel pretty well covered, though.

well, i am sure he will say it, so, i will just rein
force it by agreeing, the apples have more efficient
processors... they do more with less... i have se
en a place or two on the web giving the comparison..
. this much apple mhz equals that much pc mhz, etc.
..
btw, if you do a web search on mac vs. pc and throw
in the word "faq" i bet you'll see some solid compar
isons...

since i haven't touched all this stuff in awhile i c
an't say on this one for today's software/services,
but, i will say that the pc'ers have always created
alot more paranoia about lack of software than actua
lly exists, but, i think you got that part already..
.
