yes, but, proxy servers can help too, and its better than a string.
if you want to have a better and faster connection, find a good proxy
server to you. you can start here:

http://www.proxy4free.com

i assume that you know how to configure a proxy server on your
Dreamcast.

This was the first DC related site I ever visited
when I got a Dreamcast with PW 1.0 way back in '99

They had all the forums, ladders (for online games)
and good content (plus a really good newsletter
at the beginning). In fact Dricasworld started
as a Saturn online site and evolved from that.

Kinda sad to see a chapter close.....
although not totally unexpected as they moved from the
DC to other platforms over the last couple of years

The Dreamcast's modem uses Conexant modem chips, marked RP56LD for the 56kbps
version and RP336LD for the 33.6kbps version.

The MCU (which is used for executing code loaded into SRAM) is based on the
Rockwell 6502 processor but with some modifications.

About the modem messages on PW.....

The modem messages display the commands that are sent to the modem, and the
response that comes back from the modem after it receives the command.
Commands usually begin with 'AT'. Responses are typically either 'OK', or
'ERROR'. The modem messages should look something like this:

AT&F

OK

ATI0

OK

932

OK

ATI0

OK

ATS25=5

OK

AT&F0\C0&D2&K3&Q0&C1M1

OK

ATL2

OK

ATDT96072288 This is the number that the modem is dialing. (Your number will
be different of course)

CONNECT 115200 (This message only appears if you connect successfully)

All this is VERY fast of so its difficult to see the actual connection speed
at the very end (although something like 46666 might be 46kps)

If the modem responds with the word 'ERROR' (instead of the word 'OK') after
one of the AT commands, there may be a problem with your modem. If the modem
responds with "OK" to all of the modem commands, it's telling you it's working
properly.

They generally hold up pretty well. The only problem I ever had was a direct
lightining strike in 2002 which fried it. Luckily I had a spare DC for parts
so it was a quick fix.

heh, well then that pretty much ends that, i would t
hink...
so that would mean that changing the init strings is
almost useless unless you know the specific strings
it understands... and no one would know those but
sega, if i am not mistaken (since i always heard tha

btw, i looked at the dp modem init settings, and it
is blank by default... obviously, i take soj's word
for it more than i would soa... (and, i could be w
rong, but, the options section it is in is for bba s

i also looked in all the official printed dpp docume

Just a technical note, the Dreamcast modem is not a real hayes modem.
The Sega devkit emulates a hayes modem, but the hardware itself
doesn't accept hayes commands. So anything made with homebrew
software (DreamShell, KOS, etc.) wont be useful for testing hayes
commands.

well, actually, pw shows some stuff, but, it is not

but, once you get a list of hayes commands, it never

btw, if you use the modem init string "ATZ" that tot
ally resets it to the factory state... however, it
is already in that state as soon as you turn the dc
on...
but, if you want one to try, that is one...

you can find full listings of every possible variabl
e to use, btw... these modem inits are called "haye
s commands", the dc modem is a hayes modem...
so, you could do a search for hayes commands to get
a full list...
http://google.com/search?q=hayes+commands
and poke around until you find a list...

see, everything that comes after the "AT" means some
thing specific, so, it is just a translation thing..
.
so, the "Z" after the AT means reset the modem and l
oad factory config...
incidentally, "AT&F0" means load the factory config.
.. as i recall, you said you were using "AT&F", thi
s is not a valid modem init, it should be AT&F0...
many commands will make the dc modem function worse,
not better (such as commands that affect handshakin
g and flow control)... which is why you need the on
es specific for this modem if you are to get complic
ated with it...
without specific info, just going to the factory def
ault is the best bet, so, "ATZ" or "AT&F0"...

once you have lists of hayes commands, you can even
check on supposedly useful init strings by looking u
p each variable after the "AT"...
so, like if someone tells you "ATL3" will get you mu
ch better speed, you can look up "L3" on the list an
d see that all L3 does is set the modem speaker to l
oud... nothing to do with speed... and the dc mode
m has no speaker anyway, so, this is a totally usele
ss command...

not to mention, many codes are not even for hayes mo
dems, so, again, at best it will be useless on a dc
modem, at worst it will mess things up...
there may be some useful variables, but, unless you
know what variables this particular modem supports,
you have no idea what they will do to it and no soft
ware gives you a modem test mode, so, you cannot eve
n watch to see what happens...

no keywords necessary, just go to the group links, f
ind the "useful sites and services" folder... there
are a few listed there and some in the "one-click t
ests" folder still work...
(the one-click tests folder is in the useful sites/s

the only thing you would need keywords for is if you
intend to use a search engine to look for speed tes
ts not listed in the group links...
and many do not work on dc, which is why we made it
a point to list the dc-friendly ones in the group li

it will always be different because you will always
connect at different speeds...
as far as what the numbers mean specifically, it has
been too long since i used pw, someone else will ha
ve to answer that one...

> With my Dreamkey and DreamPassport browsers, I wan

hmmm, yeah, that can happen...
not sure what to tell you on that... i also prefer
it bumps me off, but, leaving call waiting on usuall
y works for me... just be sure you do not have the
disable call waiting code in your dial-up phone numb
er... you should have the phone number and nothing
else...
call waiting should bump you since it interrupts the
  data carrier...

if you have done all that, i have no idea...
in fact, i don't even remember there being a call wa
iting option in pw, so, i am clueless on this one...

> Where in the browsers can I help myself get discon
nect for phone calls?

it is not a browser setting, except in that it is so
mething that goes in the phone number box if you tur
n call waiting off... (which you don't want to do i
f you want it to bump you off, of course...)

> I was hoping that the modem string thingy would do
  something about this too.

nope... all the init string does is modem stuff, th
e call waiting is a function of the phone line, the
modem doesn't have any control over it...

i definitely concur...

i used dp3 a long time before dpp and hated dpp at f
irst, but, i wanted to give it a thorough testing to
be able to report thorough results... it is quite
different from dp3 in many many ways, but, it grew o
n me and i could not go back to dp3 once i learned h
ow to use everyting on dpp...
and that is the point... dpp is sort of like starti
ng the learning process all over again, buttons are
in different places, there are all sorts of new feat
ures and options, and it is not as well documented a
s dp3, so, many questions get only "no one knows" as
  an answer...

you should use dp3 for quite a while before there is
any reason to go to dpp...
MOST people who try dpp and aren't yet good with dp3
reject it almost immediately... the people who sti
ck with dpp are usually the ones who have used dp3 a
long time and keep hitting the ceiling of its abili
ties and require more and the steeper learning curve
  is worth it...
but, starting on dpp means drowning in a sea of japa
nese menus... once you know dp3, you know what you
are looking for, you just have to find where they mo
ved it to in dpp...

yes, pw has many such problems... to use a phrase t

well, have a look at the group faq, there is a secti

> What's that XDP browser all about?
> How about Dreampassport Premier?

the xdp is one of the hacked browsers... they took
various browsers and changed stuff in them and are d
istributing them... since this violates copyright,
it is not legal and is generally off-topic here beca
use there is too much invested in this group to have
  it closed by yahoo...
ask how something works on it, someone will probably

drugs is a good analogy... no problem stating here
that you do drugs, but, if you ask where to GET drug

btw, this is the most controversial point to ever co

both sides... we prefer to keep things friendly...
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/psdbrowsers
that is the home of a couple flavors of the unoffici

>
> Unfortunately, I don't have a computer to download

> *reaches in pocket and scoops up a couple dollars,
coins, lint, string, and a rubber band*

there are no free browsers anymore, unfortunately...
which means there are basically no legal ways to acq
uire them except to buy them used at a game shop or
something...

and, keep in mind, the dreampassports can be tough i
f you are not already familiar with dreamkey... be
sure you know dreamkey rather well before moving to
dreampassport...
and, the dp3 (which you say you have) is probably TH
E most popular browser, and it will take a bit of le
arning to get good with it, so, you have plenty to k
eep you busy...
plenty of resources in the guides/tutorials (and els
ewhere in the group) to help you with dp3, btw...

the generally recommended learning route is first le
arn dreamkey, then you will know how to use dp3 and
it won't matter that you can't read the japanese, th
en, when you want more, give dpp a try...
dpp is not necessarily better than dp3, it comes dow
n to a matter of choice, some prefer one, some the o
ther, you lose certain features no matter which you
choose...
btw, long ago, i wrote a comparison of dp3 vs. dpp,
it is in the guides/tutorials...
and, again, the dc browser feature comparison chart
documents many differences in all the available brow
sers...

if you peruse the guides and tutorials, you will see
several things that compare browsers to each other.
.. pw vs. dk/dp, dp3 vs. dpp, the feature compariso
n chart, etc....
look over them and many of your questions will be an
swered in detail...

Okay, I need directions to get to the connection speed tester.

What to click on, what keywords to use, blah blah, blah.

And when i first connect with the PW browser it quickly flashes
4533/something..something the first number is always different everytime I
connect.
  Sometimes it's 4666/something something....

With my Dreamkey and DreamPassport browsers, I want to get disconnected when
someone calls, but it's not doing it at all, and the phone won't ring. This
happens on Planetweb too!

I used to get disconnected and the phone rings, that's the way I want it so I
won't miss any calls. I have the call waiting box cleared. There's nothing in it
(the way I had it before).

What could be the problem.

Where in the browsers can I help myself get disconnect for phone calls? I was
hoping that the modem string thingy would do something about this too.

Just to verify...you do know how to bring up the url
bar on DK1 correct? Once you get your internet
settings in the DC memory theres really no reason
to use PlanetWeb unless it's for IRC or something.

This is better than DK1 because it has SSL and HTTPS
support and I imagine better javascript (slightly)

How about Dreampassport Premier?

There are several variations but I've found that
overall Dreampassport Premier is best *if* you
need chab and IRC together. It's got a ton of
other cool features (address book, skins, etc).

I prefer DK3 but, like DPP, can be kinda hard
to obtain these days . That DP3 you have
should suit your needs for browsing/email.

WHoa!

Thank you for the information you guys!

Sorry for the late post, I was away cleaning the kitchen. I'll try going back to
that site again.

I'm using the Planetweb 2.6 browser (brown and black).

I also have Dreamkey 1.0 on some of my games, but I can't set up internet info
(have to set up with PW). But I use them to play midis and visit sites that have
'clickable buttons'.

Planetweb doesn't make those butons clickable. i click and click, but nothing
happens.

I was filling out an online application for Hollywood Video one time with
Planetweb. I spent a ood while filling out the page. At the bottom, there was a
button that said CONTINUE. So, I clicked.....nothing.

*Click Click Click*

Nothing!

I popped in Metropolis Street Racer and used the DK browser for the hollywood
application. I didn't bother filling it out and went straight to that button.
It worked!

I also have DreamPassport 3 that's on my Fire Pro Wrestling D (Japanese) game.
It's an okay browser and everything, but are there better browsers than this?

What's that XDP browser all about?
How about Dreampassport Premier?

Are these browser free? Where can I get one?

Unfortunately, I don't have a computer to download anything.

*reaches in pocket and scoops up a couple dollars, coins, lint, string, and a
rubber band*

Just to clarify a couple of things.....

You can just empty the DNS field completely
or use all zero's (either way same result).....

About the speed tests....remember this test is a general
one that shows the downloading of a page from their
server...a different page from another server (dependent
on what is on the page) may produce different results.

Location also can make a difference, cached pages, etc.
Also PW is undeniably a bit faster despite being the
least desirable browser to use on your system.

And those ads are sometimes prohibitive on PW because
of the javascripting used in some of them. In fact I posted
on this a couple years ago....they totally block the message
field at the site (although this does occour randomly).

I got a great connection to the SegaNet gaming servers
but the isp was about average compared to other internet
providers in my area.

well, half the links are dead, it seems, but, in the
links is the "useful sites and services" and in the
re is "one-click tests", on which i got 21.6bps, not
  too good...

see, to further complicate things, there is connecti
on speed, download speed, upload speed, and more to
consider...
(plus, as karl suggested, phone cord, phone line, ph
one company (to start with, phones were made for voi
ce, not data, it is a poor carrier of data), isp, lo
cation of the pop point you are using, software, int
ernet congestion, number of users connected via your
  isp, and dozens more...)

for connection speed, use planetweb set on verbose m
odem messages, and, when it connects, you will see t
wo five-digit numbers divided by a slash, that will
be conncetion speed (someone here will remember how
to interpret them if you post what it says)... much
more practical is your download speed, which you ca
n get by using dreamkey or dreampassport... every t
ime you download a media file on dk/dp, it gives you
a full reading with download speed...

you will also find different speeds between pw and d
k/dp...
pw gets better connection speeds, but dk/dp renders
html faster, so, they even out a lot of the time...
head to head, there are many considerations, dk/dp
is optimized for a slower connection, since it was i
ntended for people using 28k/33k modems (euro/jap/as
ia), they did things that pw didn't need to worry ab
out since pw would be on machines with 56k modems...
the connection speed on dk/dp is not capped or anyth
ing, it just does things drastically differently tha
n pw does...
and it works well, which is why 99% prefer dk/dp to
pw... great connection speed is useless if it rende
rs slow, doesn't stream media, is overloaded with us
eless apps, etc.... dk/dp uses what it has better,
so, connection speed is less of an issue... dk/dp m
ay very well get better download times, even if pw g
ets better connection speeds...
connection speed is better on paper, but, there are
many practical things to consider where the rubber m
eets the road and you actually notice a difference..
.

as you can see, this gets pretty damned complex...

and i scoff at anyone who says it is only a matter o
f a "magic bullet" modem string that solves it all..
. (and it is largely a dc'er fixation...) there is
a hell of a lot more to it than that and you can sp
end your life trying to "optimize your speed" or wha
tever...
want better speeds? do something practical like tur
ning off images and javascript... i do this a lot a
nd the difference is dramatic... in fact, my images
are off MOST of the time...
anything you can shut down is good... i could swear
dpp runs faster when i have chab off...

other than stuff like that, this group of dc browser
users has been around for over three years and disc
overed a lot and dramatically changed the dc-browser
-using world back in 'the day'... so, if there was
a cure-all or a magical modem init, odds are good th
at the thousands of users that have passed through w
ould have found it...

nowadays it is mostly the online gamers tired of lag
  that still bring it up...

nope, i still can't duplicate it...
i tried clicking on messages from search results, th
e messages list, and the front page, and, yes i get
the occasional ad like always, but, they always stop
  after one...

what exactly are you on?
no, not drugs, i mean platform...
i assume dc, but, browser?
but, even if this was a problem for planetweb, i wou
ld think we would have heard about it...
usually, when something goes wrong we get twenty pos
ts in a row...

ok, i've already lost track, which link does this?
i tried both searches and went to the group links an
d neither gave me back to back ads, so, either i'm l
ucky or i was not going the same place you were...

i don't quite follow... you can't set your connecti
on speed to what you want, it decides, best you can
do is find out what was decided...
like, "ok, i am on the highway in my new car, my foo
t on the floor, now i will look at my speedometer an
d see how fast i'm going"...

sorta'...

actually, 0.0.0.0
eg, one zero in every field...

i kinda' muddled this a bit...
the original poster doesn't sound like he'll need se
arch, but, i will clarify for all that may be readin
g now and in the future...

there is a search box on the group front page that s
earches all the posts ever made here...
(though, now that i think about it, the whole modem
init thing may have taken place while we were still
at the vgso...
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VGSOnline )

and there is a search engine that you can get to by
following the link on the group front page... it do
es NOT search any messages, but, it searches the lin
ks and other stuff, including other sites deemed use
ful by the dc browser using community...
(though, it seems quite keyword-spammed by a certain
someone... you can avoid this by using advanced se
arch and tell it not to search keywords...)

the only way to be thorough is to use both searches,
i guess (all three, counting vgso)...
it's what i have been doing for a long time...
