Well I stand corrected, scripts (bookmarklets) CAN be saved and run from the
WebTV box (version 2.6, not sure about the "classic" IE 2.0). Interesting as
I have NEVER seen anything posted on WTV groups or sites. Maybe they aren't
aware of running javascript commands from the browser? Oh well guess this
oughta be posted elsewhere but I was a bit surprised.

In case anyone has wondered here is a quick look at MSN-WTV so you can
compare it to DPP. Actually not much difference except with DPP you do have
the ability to run scripts.

Versions

There are three main types of receivers. The Classic receivers have 2 to
4MB of memory and no TV Tuner. The Plus receivers have 8 to 16MB of memory
plus a TV Tuner. There is also a special breed of Classic with 8MB of
memory. The Classic receivers with 2 to 4MB of memory are IE 2.0 equivalent
while the Plus and 8MB Classic are IE4.0 equivalent.

Flash Support

# Macromedia Flash 1.0
# Macromedia Flash 2.0
# Macromedia Flash 3.0
# Macromedia Flash 4.0

HTML

Our receivers support most of HTML version 4.0. Most of the behaviors are
identical to what is expected in any other browser.

Cascading Style Sheets

Our TV browser supports most of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) level 1, as
well as some of the positioning properties defined in CSS level 2.

Secure Sites

There are two ways a user can tell they are looking at a secure page: they
see a Secure Page label in the title bar before the title, or the address
uses the https:// protocol. We support versions 2 and 3 of SSL. The known
trusted roots include:

     * VeriSign Class 3 root
     * RSA Secure Server Certificate Authority
     * GTE Secure Server CA
     * Thawte Consulting

The ciphers supported include:

     * RC4 40 bit with MD5 (exportable)
     * RC4 128 bit export 40 with MD5 (exportable)
     * RC4 128 bit with MD5
     * RC4 128 bit with SHA

JavaScript

The TV browser supports almost the full feature set of the JavaScript
standard version 1.3.

Note: The TV browser does not allow a document.write function within an
external .js file to create a new (third) file with other script functions.
This nesting effect is not supported. Also note that use of Javascript
reserved words as variable names is prohibited.

Objects

Developers referencing objects with JavaScript have to pay particular
attention to the window object, most specifically the window.open function.
Since we do not use the concept of windowing that the PC browser is based
upon, the handling of these objects can be difficult at best. While the TV
browser supports it, developers are strongly encouraged never to use the
window.open function.

Anyone recall the rumors that Xbox had bought the technology from sega
dreamcast and only added a harddrive and cosmetic changes?

Strange, that the new cosoles don't have browser capabilities. It seems the
world has little interest in cheap internet access outside of gaming. Or maybe
PC companies don't want cheap viable access.

It is true about the DC games looking as good as the new consoles, look at what
bleem did for psx. The built in texture smoothing function on ps2 doesn't do a
thing for mgs.

Well it won't happen but the whole "Dreamcast 2" thing started long before
E3. As a matter of fact screenshots of the "new" console (fakes) were posted
on the internet a year and a half ago. As far as Sega Corp. profitability
goes it has turned around completely. The last fiscal quarter showed for the
first time in a while, a massive profit. Sega's strategy of just making
software, closing unprofitable arcades, and ditching hardware is finally
paying off. There is no way Sega will deliver another console after the DC
fiasco.

Sega as a company are in no fit state to release a
console for a long time to come, they simply dont have
the financial resources, it was only a few months back
there was talk of them getting taken over or merging
with Sammy just to stay afloat. They lost a lot of
money by concentrating more on the Xbox rather than
the PS2, but they seem to be realising that mistake.
Its a sad fact but dont expect a new console from Sega
any time soon, another 4 or 5 years at least if they
ever do release one :(

Howdy everyone. Im sure you have all heard the rumours of a new sega console - a
DREAMCAST 2 if you will. And, if you guys are anything like me, the rumours have
been very attractive. Well, i did a bit of research, and came up with the
definitive truth.
  And the result is.......................
   ITS NOT GONNA HAPPEN :-(
The rumours started at E3 2003, when Yuki Naka (sorry if I spelt that wrong)
said something along the lines of ~Sega are looking forward to the possiblility
of new sega hardware~. well, what happened is that Mr. Naka`s translator STUFFED
UP! In reality, he said something more along the lines of working hard to
impress with new software on other hardware ie: Xbox, PS2 etc. Bummer, huh!
However, it got me thinking. I believe with some work, Sega could actually
re-release the dreamcast
and possibly have success with it. Think about it. The DC`s best games still
look alot better than some of the Xbox and PS2 and GCN games out there. And NONE
of the new consoles support web browsing. Heres a list of things I think Sega
could do to revive the Dreamcast.
1) Put stacks of cash into the re-launch. pretend the first launch never
happened. Out of sight, out of mind.
2) Drop the price compared to the first launch, but keep it respectable. I
reckon $150US. If it was too cheap, it would seem desperate.
3) LEAVE the US and UK out of any business. All they did was keep the dreamcast
back. The UK and US have the job of translating the games and browsers, THATS
ALL.
4) Release every game in every territory. The dreamcast PAL territory could have
made money. If they werent so badly screwed over (1 australian web browser? COME
ON!!)
5) REALLY push the online capabilities. Hey, it worked from day 1 with the Xbox!
6) Release a whole host of different coloured consoles/controllers/VMUs. Give
the kids what they want.
7) Get REALLY creative with the browsers. Instant messenger services that work
with PCs too. Multi window/ desktop-based browsing. Whatever could make it more
functional.

Well, thats all I can think of, but I seriously believe it could work. I`d love
to hear some opinions.
Seeya, dudes.

Yeah that is interesting. Sometimes i find Reloading
the page can help with Planetweb to display Flash, as
you say Planetweb seems to handle Flash pretty crappy
anyway, whether it supports Flash 3 or 4(Planetweb 3),
i've been noticing that a lot while using my Planetweb
v3.0 myself recently.

One plus point for Planetweb v3.0 over DPP i've
discovered is that it seems to handle Aiff and Wav
Files much better and has a far better interface. I
downloaded 2 Aif Files and 2 Wav Files on Planetweb
v3.0 yesterday, ones of a 164KB and ones that were
3500KB and it handled them fine in both Formats, i
couldnt even get the 164KB ones to download on DPP :/

Interesting I never compared sites with flash but it could have something to
do with the way the memory is cached on each browser that prohibits some
flash from loading fully on PW. I always thought DPP handled most flash
pretty well though.

vm files can contain 2 type of values: binary/ASCII. the binary
values represent numbers used by your game for several settings, a
basic example is the number of lives. ASCII values correspond to text
string such as the names in the ranking table or the name of the
character. if you want to edit binary value you have to modify the
hex value of each byte because its ASCII representation can be a
special char impossible to input. in hew the value go from 00 to FF
because each byte go from 0 to 255 in decimal. the effects of the
modifications depend of each game/save. some games are quite easy to
modify such as dead or alive 2 or ikaruga, some are harder like the
rpg or the games that include a lot of parametters/objects, finally
some files are encrypted and cant be edited in this form. the actual
content of the file generally starts at offset 604 (decimal) but it
can vary from file to file depending of the vms header. to learn more
about the vms file structure take a look at this page:
http://mc.pp.se/dc/vms/fileheader.html

note that the actual version of the vm hexeditor is buggy and will be
improved soon

Added this link as a bookmark under canidates unsorted (Blueswirls Hotmail
Project) for reference. I only have a few minutes so no time to test this
personally right now but certainly will as soon as I get back. If I remember
correctly Hotmail is one of the few clients to accept certain VMU files
other mail services won't reccognize so yes if we can figure a way to make
accounts its perfect for exchanging files. Again, great job on making a
another useful tool for DC users Blueswirl. It has been well over three
years since I could use Hotmail on my Dreamcast.

you can find the hotmail mail web client compatible with dc
attachments at this url:
http://bswirl.stormnetwork.net/hail

one of the original programmers told me he gonna think about a way to
allow anybody to create hotmail accounts, not only people with msie4+
like it is now on hotmail official website. if they implement this
feature in the next version hotmail could become the perfect mail
account for dc users, except they wont be able to use it with the
browser mail client

yes i know accounts get deleted if you dont use them, that sux but i
dont think its really a problem for someone who wants to use his
hotmail account as his regular mail account.
actually this is not my tool, the biggest part (http process) hasnt
been written by myself, i just improved the way it reads the answer
from the server, and added a few things during the mail sending
process.
this tool was not originally made for dc users so i think theres
still a request from some pc users to be able to use a 3rd party web
client instead of outlook express or hotmail's webmail.
when i implemented attachments i thought it would be a good idea to
make it compatible for both pc and dc users cause i didnt want to
leave the 1st goal of this tool that was made for pc users, the
project will hopefully evolute after my modifications so it has not
to be reoriented to become a dc only project.
it didnt require a lot of distinctions in the code so i made it
compatible with dc browsers too, if every webmail could bother
everyone could send/receive vm files attachments not only with the
browser's mail client but also with any webmail as it is the case
with my hail's version.

btw im still looking for a way to implement dk/dp attachments, but
the content-transfer-encoding is x-dreamcast-file, i dont know how to
decode the multipart attachment. ive tried to decode it like the
input stream sent with html forms buts it looks totally different.
for example the stream is not separated in header/body, the
vmfilename is somewhere at the begining but i dont know where
exactly. and loren peace's translation table doesnt apply in this
case. any help is welcome

Your hotmail log-in tool sounds good. Well for Dreamcast users since a PC
user can check it in the normal way (unless its a very old browser). So far
I have not seen anything to create hotmail accounts though. And if you have
one just a reminder you have to log-in once every 30 days or its deleted.

ive successfully modified hail's sources, here are the improvments:

-now it recognizes html and other mimetypes as attachments, you can
view the files or save them (on hdd for pc users and on the vm for dc
users).
-multipart mails as well as quoted-printable or base64 encoded
messages are now recognized.
-added the "reply" function.
-you can also choose up to 10 files to attach in replies/new mails,
the attachments are files from the hdd for pc users and vm files for
dc users. the vm attachments are encoded using the same method as
planetweb's mail, so vm files sent with pw are recognized and can be
saved with dk/dp/pw, but vm files sent with dk/dp are not properly
decoded for now. the principal advantage for dk/dp users is they can
now send/receive several vm files in attachments, but as the vmi file
is missing some bugs with copy protected files and/or -GAME- files
will appear just like when u use pw mail.

for now im not sure of the conditions that allow me to publish the
result so i cant show the tool, but as soon as it will be officially
available ill post the url here.
oh and theres still a problem using hotmail's accounts on dc, u can
check the mails with any online tool like hail but u cant make an
account using dc browsers. did someone work on a tool that allows
anybody to create a hotmail account? (im not talking about a
modification of the user agent in the browsers source)

X on the Controller+Esc on the KeyBoard also brings up the Source Viewer. this
is done without opening the Right Trigger Menu.

Also like Blueswirl said nothing is installed it just loads an applet. If it
doesn't load after you put in the user and pass you might be able to install
the latest sun java on the library pc (it only takes a few minutes).

The top box you put in your full ISAO address. The box below it it is for
the password. If it works you will go to a page with your buddy list and
current page users on the right (top and bottom) and on the left you will
see the top 50 sites with chab users (url's and no. of users on each page).
Incidently the java chab is not related to DPPC, its just called Java Chab v
1.2. DPPC is completely different.

its only a java applet it doesnt install anything, ull have to login
again but its safer to delete temporary internet files which contain
the java classes.
if i remember correctly the textarea at the right side is actually a
list where u can see people connected to the same url, or people from
your buddy list, u can see an icon corresponding to their status at
the left of their nickname.
im not too sure about those infos since i could only test it a few
days before my chab account got deleted

If its permanent is it easy to uninstall afterwards? What do you need
to fill in on that Login Page just your Username and Password? I
noticed some other boxes and a big text box to the right side of the
screen, any help will be appreciated because i want to try it out
tomorrow.

I successfully got it to work one time back when 3.0 came out. It's not an
IM as you may think, but a lame java based chat area. You couldn't surf and
IM anybody, both people had to be logged in, and no messages were stored on
a server. About the worst attempt at instant messenger I've ever seen.

I'm sure it won't work on PW3 although it would be cool if it did. You know
when the applet is fully loaded when the log-in screen appears. You have to
have Sun Java 1.3.1 and 1.4.1 is reccomended for Netscape based browsers.
What you saw was the applet trying to connect but couldn't.

Sounds like you have a bad burn maybe. If you can try
it on a mates Dreamcast and see how it works on that.
Is there any marks on the disc? Try cleaning it. This
is sometimes a common problem with New Cdr's too, when
the protective layer on the play side of the disc is
too thick thus causing problems for the laser to read it.
