HyperBookmarks (convert many DP bookmark files to one small file)   Message List
Reply Message #7609 of 15964 |

---- Description ----

when you open your bookmarks, you will have bookmark folders...
each one has a description of the collection, and when you click on that folder,
it will show you a page with all those bookmarks...

this is an incredible tool and really saves alot of space...
for an example, i just looked at one HyperBookmark i have... it has 31 links...
now, one file at a time, that would be 62 blocks... that is alot... yet, the
HyperBookmark file is only 10 blocks!!! this tool is a HUGE space-saver...
and, once you bookmark the compressor page and use it a couple of times, it
really becomes a very quick operation...

use it often...

the creator of this method now refers to these compressed bookmark files as a
"HyperBookmark"... in this guide, i will use the terms interchangably...
"HyperBookmark", "bookmark compressor", "compressed bookmarks", etc.... they
all refer to the ame process/file/site/etc....
this update of this guide will deal with some of the newer features of the
HyperBookmark maker...

as with anything, putting it into words makes it look alot harder or more
complicated than it is... you can pretty much go to the bookmark compressor and
use it with no instruction...
think of this guide as a reference for when you have questions...

---- Note About DreamKey ----

on the front page on the bookmark compressor site, he has a a link that says
"DreamKey?" and has apparently modified the method to work with DreamKey
bookmark files on the page that link leads to... i have not tested this method,
but, if it does work, all instructions and descriptions below will apply, no
special instructions needed, so far as i know...

---- DreamPassport Method ----

go to the bookmark compressor at
http://snow.prohosting.com/droleen/shiori2

(note, this url has been subject to change in the past, so, if the link is dead,
poke around in the dcbg bookmarks (probably in 'most useful sites for dc users')
and/or post to the dcbg and ask where the site currently resides...)

click on each grey button to upload a bookmark file...

also, below the two columns of input boxes with buttons will be one larger
box... in this box, you can enter titles and url's manually... type in the
title, then on the next line, type in the url, then continue to add them, and do
not leave blank lines between...
he gives an example on the page which i will use here...
for instance, if you wanted to add google and yahoo, you would type them in to
look like this...

Google
http://www.google.com
Yahoo!
http://www.yahoo.com

when you have uploaded/entered all the bookmarks you want to be in the new
folder, you will see a grey button below the larger text box... hit that to
submit all the bookmarks...

it will take you to another page...

this page will allow you to name, number, and download your new file... you can
click on "preview" to see what the file will look like before you download it
and then hit back to return to the previous screen...
i will comment on the "edit" functions in a moment...

in the top white box, type the number you want the new file to be... (ie,
typing in 99 will result in the filename PASSPORT.S99)

in the second box, type a name for this collection... this name will be
displayed in your bookmarks...

click the grey submit button to download the new file...

after you have saved the file, open your bookmarks, click on 'load', and you
will find it there...

--- Notes ---

when you load and look at the file you just downloaded, at the bottom left of
the folder page will be a little box that you can check off... after you check
it off, each link you click on will put the url into a text box where you can
copy it...

to add new bookmarks to a compressed file, just upload the compressed file you
already have with the bookmark files you want to add... it will recognize the
HyperBookmark file and merge it with other bookmarks and links that you add...

also note that you will want to be sure what you put in each folder as you
cannot alter links once you put them in... you can change the order they are in
and remove them from the list, but, you cannot change the title or url...

-- The Edit Features --

the person who created this has added some much-needed features which i will
explain here...

when you click edit you will be taken to something of a HyperBookmark editor...
here you can re-order the links, change the color scheme, remove links from the
list, or even split them up into two separate files, as well as a couple other
things...

much of this is self-explanatory when you see it, but, i will touch on the
function of the options, briefly...

in the box on the left, you will see the list of links that are in the file you
have just uploaded/created... note, sometimes, it dos not show ALL of the
links... simply reload the page until they all show up...

the box on the right will be empty...

each box has a set of buttons... "Up", "Dn", and a direction pointing to the
other box, ">>" or "<<"... then, below each box is a preview and download
button...

to remove links from the list, simply highlight each one by clicking on it, then
use the direction button to move them to the other box...
by doing this, you can create two separate lists, and either save both or only
save one and the others will be discarded...

using the up and down buttons, you can re-arrang the list into any order you
like... and, at the top of the screen is an option to have the list with titles
on the left or URLs...

the page is divided into two frames, and clicking on either preview button will
show you what the file currently looks like in the top frame...

toward the bottom of the page, you will see a "color type" choice of A or B...
A is the traditional color scheme that is used in your browser's history and the
other is a nicer grey and blue color scheme...

should you decide you want to start over, there is a reset button at the top
left of the main page... this will totally undo any changes you have made,
including the order you put them in and it will also put all the links back into
the left box...

when you have everything sorted the way you like, the bottom of the main page
has the same options as the usual HyperBookmark download page...
same as the instructions given above, enter the name and number you want for
this file... then, click the download button for whichever list you want to
download...
