You can fully specify characters with the ACK, but because we don't provide
the maps in Return of Kra'an, you can't rebuild the original adventure.
I think there is a "hack" save game editor for Dragon Bane - search for
"dragon bane" on palmgear.com. It might let you change the name. Also, you
could very carefully use a binary editor on your save game (make a backup)
and change the name there.

Thanks for the in-depth reply Simon. One silly question -- can you
use the ACK to edit characters in the original Dragon Bane game? I
know the name thing is a minor point, but I really hat the name

Hi Steve,
I haven't done this in a while. I think the solution to this is to remember
that turning your party around counts as a move (looking at map view does
not I think). Therefore, you need to learn to move sideways (and perhaps
backwards) without turning your party around.
It is not a matter of how fast you tap your moves. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Chris Kim

I found the secret passageway through the wall at (14,17) but no
matter how fast I go I can't get to the gate before it locks again,
Am I doing something wrong??? do I need to press the button for a
long period of time??? very confused... help please.

Hello Mike.
I am a little confused at this point. The torch in the cursed crypt at 5,4
is a one way walk thru wall. The wall at 4,5 is a normal wall with a sewer
grate at the bottom.
There should be no problem. What you will need to do is send me your saved
game and I will investigate it for you straight away.
Your saved game file is found in your palm back up directory called
"Drg2saveSSPD.PDB". I can then run it through the emulator & try & reproduce
the same error. Preferably you will also have a saved game in one of the
slots that occurred just before you tried to walk through this wall. If so,
let me know which slot & the label given.
Regards,
Simon Jacobs

I found the area in the The Cursed Crypt at 5,4 with the false torch

went looking for button on the wall to push but didn't find a thing.
So, I thought that I missed something and went back the beginning and
through the field, when I went down the first corrider again the
false torch holder was at 4,5! I tried to click that but nothing
happened again!!! What to do????

Through the use of various objects, specialized weapons, jewelry, fruits and
different level and armoring capabilities you are able to greatly vary the
attributes of your characters, thereby greatly impacting on their own
personal attributes. So arguably each predefined character in each of the
predefined classes has far greater 'personalization' capabilities that a lot
of those other RPGs that seem to allow "Character creation". (In reality,
they give you very limited attribute control but trick you by letting you
choose the sex & a name etc.)
In this same vein, Dragon Bane does not do any automatic / random map
creation either. Because of the complexity & variety in the maps and
adventures, these maps all have to be intricately planned and hand designed.
Again, it seems like less flexibility but provides a far superior game.
To this effect, if you still want to create your own adventures and
characters you need to investigate the free adventure construction kit (ACK)
available from Mythological. But a lot of work and dedication is required.
(Princess Demelza took me 600 hours and that was with existing characters /
wall & tile files!)

I’m still looking to see if I can find it again. I have several saved
games starting from different points mostly after the Tower, I think.
I may have gotten it after or while in the tower, but I’m not sure. I
think it appeared in the first slot in the first character’s inventory, but
again I’m not sure. I definitely didn’t get it from a shop. I don’t think I saw
it while playing Demelza, but again I’m not sure. I also did not get it from
some other character. It just suddenly appeared and at the time I didn’t know
how I got it because I don’t always look at my inventory before or after every
encounter or level change, etc.
I’m wondering where did the graphic come from in code? I didn’t see it
in connection with anything I ever purchased from the shops or received from
killing bad guys. Also does the name jewel or jewel2 appear in the code?

Do you remember which
slot in the inventory it appeared in? Did you ever see it while playing
the dezmela game, or just return of kraan (the fact that they were both
installed shouldn't matter). Can you eliminate any categories of
possibilities for how you got the jewel -- it sounds like you definately didn't
buy it in a shop or from some other character because you probably would've
remembered that, right?
Thanks

Jason,
Oh, I forgot to answer the rest of your question.
I think the jewel2 appeared in the first character’s
inventory, usually Caleb in my party. I don’t know if it would have replaced
another item since I always kept a slot open in at least one character’s inventory.
I got rid of it by going to one of the Innes and giving to an unused character.
It seems like I had two or three of the jewel2’s showing up in each game. Don’t
know the answers to the rest of your questions but I’ll run through DB2 again
and try to pin down the answers to your questions.

Jason,
I actually got Jewel2 several times while playing DB2
but only after I had installed Demelza. I didn’t figure out what my characters
were doing just before I got the jewel, however.
I thought I had seen some other messages about jewel2
besides the two you mention. Seems like Simon Jacob responded after my message.

Hi,
We're trying to track down what we believe to be a very rare bug in the engine. It seems benign -- someone in your party gets a useless "JEWEL2" item that they cannot drop. However it
could be dangerous if it is replacing something important (like a key) in your inventory.
So we'd like to know if anyone else has seen a JEWEL2 item, and more importantly, if you have, please try to help us determine how you got it. If you can either include or disclude any possibilities such as trading it from someone in a hut, buying it in a shop, finding it in a treasure chest, winning it after combat, or some other means, that would be helpful. If not, then try to at least remember what phase of the game you were at -- what was the most recent level you visited when you first noticed the jewel? What position in your character's inventory did it appear in? Which character position in your party had the item, etc?
There is an good but incomplete walkthrough created some months ago by wadedit, I guess it's still somewhere on the forum. If you don't find it let me know at rani@..., I'll mail it to you. It ends up some time before finding Demelza I guess (still haven't finished it). I doubt there is any more walkthrough available. Maybe wadedit will post the second part some day - will you wadedit?

As I understand it, no one has created a complete walkthrough for Demelza yet. Is that correct?
If someone has, where is it. I thought I'd find it in the forum in the messages section or in the files section, but...nothing.

Do you remember which slot in the inventory it appeared in? Did you ever see it while playing the dezmela game, or just return of kraan (the fact that they were both installed shouldn't matter). Can you eliminate any categories of possibilities for how you got the jewel -- it sounds like you definately didn't buy it in a shop or from some other character because you probably would've remembered that, right?
Thanks

Jason,
Oh, I forgot to answer the rest of your question.
I think the jewel2 appeared in the first character’s inventory, usually Caleb in my party. I don’t know if it would have replaced another item since I always kept a slot open in at least one character’s inventory. I got rid of it by going to one of the Innes and giving to an unused character. It seems like I had two or three of the jewel2’s showing up in each game. Don’t know the answers to the rest of your questions but I’ll run through DB2 again and try to pin down the answers to your questions.

Jason,
I actually got Jewel2 several times while playing DB2 but only after I had installed Demelza. I didn’t figure out what my characters were doing just before I got the jewel, however.
I thought I had seen some other messages about jewel2 besides the two you mention. Seems like Simon Jacob responded after my message.

Hi,
We're trying to track down what we believe to be a very rare bug in the engine. It seems benign -- someone in your party gets a useless "JEWEL2" item that they cannot drop. However it could be dangerous if it is replacing something important (like a key) in your inventory.
Thanks MythoLogical

I agree. I’ve

But we're concerned about play balancing, especially for the Kra'an

party +50% fire resistance with one spell cast. But we're concerned
that if we lowered it to something like +20% for the entire party,
then the kra'an battle might not be ("acceptably") survivable.
The spell does not stack, so casting it again would have no effect.
Should we keep the spell the same and require you to cast it for
every party member, but allow you to get the huge fire/magic
resistance bonus that way? Or should we save your party from having
to waste turns and SP by re-casting it for every target, but lower
it's effectiveness for each individual?
For compatibility reasons, we can't have it both ways, that is, offer
one or more spells that just target an individual, and one or several
more that target the party.

Dear Craig,
I think you are correct in the fact that RESIST FIRE is not needed to
win the final battle in "Return of Kra'an" (MSRK) or to fight
GUARDIANs. TechnoMagic U. also has many encounters with fire
creatures. Most of the time when I fight them, I do not use RESIST
FIRE. For game balance the spell RESIST FIRE can be left the same or
changed.
However, I think that RESIST FIRE should affect only one character.
Casting IQTAR'S MAGIC COAT already gives the entire party AC -4, +20%
fire resistance, +15% magic resistance for an inexpensive 16 spell
points. RESIST FIRE costs 4 spell points for just a +50% fire
resistance for one party member, however +50% is more than the +20%
given by IQTAR'S MAGIC COAT. In my opinion, changing RESIST FIRE to
match the manual just makes it an inferior version of IQTAR'S MAGIC
COAT. Better to leave it as it is, a different tactic someone can
use, and just change the manual.
Sincerely yours,
NEFTF

Dear Jason,
If a party cannot survive 5 combat turns to cast RESIST FIRE on every party member, it is unlikely to survive 5 turns of battle even with a RESIST FIRE PARTY spell that gives every party member the same effect in one casting (Note 1).
The ARMOR_ALL spells already grant the entire party an AC adjustment, resist fire adjustment, and resist magic adjustment. Adventure designers who want such a spell can simply create a spell RESIST FIRE PARTY, that has AC adjustment zero, fire resistance 50% and magic resistance zero, then do the same for RESIST MAGIC PARTY.
Sincerely yours, NEFTF
Note 1) When replaying "Return of Kra'an" (MSRK) recently I was using a party of 5 characters including POE. Since POE's healing spells are so powerful, he can usually save any party member as long as he is alive. So each time I discovered a potion that increased hit points, fire resistance, magic resistance or improved AC, I gave it to POE. In the end he had more hit points than anyone. Before this strategy, I would sometimes have to restart because POE would be killed by a monster ranged attack during a difficult combat. Without POE's healing spells, the difficult monsters would overcome the rest of the party. This is especially common during GUARDIAN encounters.

Dear Forum,
An ARMOR_ALL spell is any of the following in "Return of Kra'an":
## "NAME" SpellType value fire magic
12 "MYSTICAL ARMOR" armor_all 1 5 5
13 "AURA OF FORTUNE" armor_all 2 10 10
14 "KAELAN'S BLESSING" armor_all 3 15 15

You can do it at 14 (maybe less) with the right party and a lot of patience.
Or you can do it trivially at 22 (or higher) without even having to heal
during the battle. Most find it a reasonable challenge at 18. YMMV.
