You have to walk around the outside of the big pit trap, if
you face the right way and move the right way, you can make it to the
doorway down into the dungeon.
What I did was keep track of where I fell and didn't fall. When I
would fall, I would just retrace where I didn't fall and then something
new at that square. Eventually I made it through.
