This was an interesting question raised in beta testing. It was the
designers' feeling that there should be some penalty in encountering the
monsters - call it a tax. Yes, I know in "real life" all the money or more
should be on the crypt stealer's body.

I can't address this question, but there was a brief discussion about this
about a month ago. With the original DB, it was possible to do this with one
character. However, in DB2, because of the decision to limit gold pieces per
monster, harder monsters, etc, it is very difficult if not impossible to do.
What some people have suggested is using elementals via wands or the cast of
extra high level characters you encounter in Stonefield Castle to cast
elementals for you. You can also use these extra characters to use heal
spells on you when you stop by. If you have a thief, you can cast Alchemy
and Materialize to create gold for healing. However, unless you find a wand
of ??? (the one that makes portals)you are almost limited to Poe, Mordor,
or whomever can cast Open Portal/Gateway. However, I think it is doable
without this, but you will have to do a lot of running back and forth from
far away places back to New Treleon to charge up.
